I'm fine with that too. Even if they didn't play in the twos I'd still want them for Round 1. Don't get me wrong I'm wrapped that they're getting the run.

Not surprised that Preuss was cooked after the first qtr, or TMac had a shocker.  Don't jump to conclusions too quickly.

    Good looking side although the VFL will be more exciting watching 3 guns in Jones, Viney and Melksham playing. Disappointed to see Preuss in the VFL though he needed more time to gel with Gawn. Interesting that Keilty is still in the team is he a smokey for round 1?

    My take is playing Preuss in the VFL is actually prioritising his preperation for a potential Rd 1 spot, not straight out demoting him.

    He plays seniors and gets 25% to 50% time at most in the ruck to further hone his skills and any new ruck strategies, where as in the VFL, you would think he will get more like 75% time in the ruck, whilst still letting Max get one good last chance to blow out any cobwebs and perfect that connection with Gus, Clarry and Harmes.  Much smarter move in my book.

    My take as well. I didn't see last week's performance, and I'm not necessarily sold on the combo approach - but Preuss needs to develop his craft and practice playing number one in the event of an injury and Max and the midfield brigade need to get some time in the middle together - with Max also needing the conditioning to play more minutes in the middle should we go with the sole ruck option. Preuss dropping down seems a sensible approach to me rather than a signal.

    Other than that, I would have liked to have seen Bedford thrown in the deep-end in exchange for JKH - for a number of reasons I won't bother documenting, other than that we need to develop a confidence  forward-pocket specialist who can provide real forward pressure alongside U-turn Tomald and fat-Trac, and JKH is unlikely competing for a spot. I also hope Frost is left in, as I imagine he will fair much better in the long-run alongside May, and eventually Lever, rather than having to take one of the accountable defensive roles.

    Is Bradtke a confirmed starter for Casey tomorrow? It will be good to get a first glimpse at him if he suits up.

    Hoping for an improved and more consistent hit out this week, as we were poor last week (albeit with a few missing).

    Last year in the corresponding JLT 2 game Vs St Kilda at Casey we totally took the foot off the pedal in the third qtr conceding six goals to one. The same thing happened 2 weeks later against Geelong (rd 1) where we fell asleep and lost the game in one quarter.

    Hopefully tomorrow, we don't switch off for a quarter as we did last week.

    So hard to get a good read on where teams are at this time of year.  We lost to one of the top teams last week with a very undermanned team on our behalf.  We only lost by 12 points or so, but I think that scoreline really flattered us after we were dominanted for probably 60% of the game and they possibly rested some of their guns in the last quarter which let us back in.

    Brisbane were pretty good last week and I do consider them to be a capable team on the rise.  I expect Brisbane to be playing fairly hard for a win this week to build confidence for the season ahead and get their supporter base energized in much the same way as I believe we selected teams and played JLT to win last year.

    I actually think a good hard hitout for us this JLT win or lose is exactly what the team needs to keep them grounded and hungry for the start of the regular season.  I see danger written all over our first three games of Port, Geelong and Essendon if we go in believing the hype.  Learning how to best handle the favourites tag and being hunted every week is the next step in our development and I'm hopeful that with Goody's down to earth demeanor and approach that it's something that we take in our stride in a clinical workman like manner.

    He reminds me of many we had on your lists over the dark years.

    His skills and attributes are very average. He does not excel at any facet of the game.  He tends to get caught a lot and does not have the ability to break away from a contest.  He is one of those players that follow the play rather than initiates play.  I really hope that I am wrong and he comes of age but I just have yet to see any glimmer that anything will change this season,

    T Mac was absolutely slaughtered last week by Rance. A very poor performance from him, albeit coming off minor surgery. Needs to rebound this week.

    A lot our premiership hopes rest on T Mac's shoulders and we can ill afford a down year from him.

Last week we went from a million bucks in the first qtr to letting Richmond waltz out of our defence with absolutely no pressure in the middle two qtrs.     Forward delivery was hopeless after quarter time. Slow and indirect with the ball just being pumped into the forward line. On most occasions TMac competed with 3 or 4 Tigers and even the odd Demon. 

    Rance beat him alright but whilst Rance was leaping from behind, Tom rarely got off the ground so that his long arms were of no advantage..

    Probably both of minutes restrictions, let’s them have a look at the depth guys under AFL conditions as well. They might play VFL next week as well.

    My guess of the 26:

    Backs (8): May, Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis, Hore, Oscar, Hunt, Frost

    Mids (9): Gawn, Oliver, Gus, Harmes, Brayshaw, Salem, Vanders, Fritsch, JKH

    Utility: Keilty (plays 2nd half to rest Gawn and T Mc more)

    Forwards (8): T Mc, Weid, Melksham, Petracca, Spargo, ANB, J Smith, C Wagner 

    In that team, JKH is a justified choice and I was thinking, how good it is to see him starting to do a phoenix resurgence from the closely proximal ashes, similar to that of Nev Jetta some years ago. Was impressed with his run and carry in this pre-season ground time. Kicking was improved, as well. Wish him all the best for the season to come.

    JKH has broadened his impact, skills and involvements steadily over his time at MFC. He was more effective than ANB against the Tigers... (and for that matter, Spargo)  and ANB has already shown he can be effective at this level. I raise this comparison because I think the JKH detractors are stuck in the past.  I'm not sure he will make it to best 22 in 2019, but he is very clearly on the fringe and may break through... have a closer look!

    Disagree with much of this. JKH was dead unlucky to get dropped late last year. Runs and works hard. Is a neat kick and stays in the contest. I actually thought he was one of our better players against the tigers in the JLT game. 

    Most on DL seem to agree that our recruiting team and football department get most things right these days. A view i certainly share.

    So it is safe to assume the club rate JKH as they saw fit to offer him a one year extension at the end of last year, on the back of what this article notes was a 'strong end to the 2018 season', something they simply would not have done if they 'saw little upside'.

    Agree with bolded bit. We looked awesome in that first quarter once we ramped up our contests.

    I think two factors played a part in our drop off in that game.

    The first is that after half time we had 4 or 5 different players come on the ground, most of whom were young or inexperienced. This impacted on our synergy and quality, whereas the tigers pretty much kept the same team on the park (you could see how well they knew each others game by the way they moved the ball from defence). 

    The other factor was we decided to do hard training session in mid 30s temperature only a few days beforehand (something we wouldn't have done if the game was for premiership points) which must have taken a fair bit out of the players - particularly the bigs (who all struggled).

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
