Why did she photoshop the crowd out? 

Pretty sure I heard Gary Lyon speak about that photo once. For some reason there was hardly any media there that day and that was the only photo that captured it

A common, decade-long circumstance for Melbourne FC games, sadly. Limited interest except for those genetically linked at the hip to the red 'n blue. Things were pretty low ... crowds were always far less than expected ... token media coverage to boot.

Thanks for this epic photo, IHW; a true moment to remember. SSmith was a very loyal Dee, with some superb assets (as if he did not come from the Kangas to join the MFC). He was more recently quite adamant that Joel was to be a Demon player. Because of Shaun, I have immense faith and hope that Joel is going to be a 'beauty' for the Dees.

I could be wrong but I think the Gabba was in the process of being rebuilt at that stage. Hence the empty stand.

I remember the game was broadcast. But that doesn't account for photographers.

It was a time, after the big win in '64, occupying the next two decades (at least) that the MFC made up the numbers in the competition, punctuated occasionally by some great, big and unexpected wins when seldom expected. I can remember the stand closure at that time and you a most probably correct about the empty stand but I cannot remember that being the case on the day of that big mark of Shaun's. To me, it does look like the crowd has been eliminated by 'photoshop' techniques, it is so clear.Who knows? 

The game was definitely broadcast on television and from memory, it was on delay in Melbourne. There were certainly photographers there and photographs were taken. I also vaguely recall seeing a flashbulb popping in one of the shots taken off the screen image.

My sister was into making ceramics at the time and she made a plate with the image of the mark of the century on it - I’m going to try to find it.

It was during the rebuild of the GABBA stands. You can clearly see the old stands half demolished and the scaffolding. Why would they photoshop the crowd?

I do like it how the video finishes with a few leaps form Joel, a bit like a teaser for the sequel.

With Joel set to be sent forward with more of a license to go for his marks this season, let's hope we see some more serious air time and that highlights reel gets longer and even more impressive as the years go on.

No. The Grandstands were being built at that time

From the Ch 7 coverage you can see the flash bulb go off. 

I was working in the ABC newsroom that night logging the game, and watched it many times frame by frame!!

Unrelated to that great mark and the discussion about photography, I saw in one of yesterday's papers that Shaun Smith is one of the players listed as being part of the concussion class action. I hope he's OK.

Magnificent timing. I vaguely remember an interview with her on The Footy Show or a similar program, would be good to see that again if possible.  

Every time I see that clip I always watch out for the camera flash. Perfect timing from all involved!

It was the last round of 95 on a Friday night and the winner made the finals. The stand was being re-built hence stuff all in the background. Despite Smith's mark we lost and Brisbane's first finals appearance occurred a week later! We finished 9th after capitulating late in the year culminating with that loss, pretty much like 2017!!
