Ron, without rehashing the Lewis argument, I doubt your last sentence thoughts.

He has great capability in regard to on-field generalship, but we saw just too many signs that his physical attributes have significantly waned. There were too many occasions over the season when his mistakes and slow legs cost the team.

Running parallel with Jordyn's physical decine is the rise of a significant number of younger players that we need to invest in.

I hope that Jordyn will make the decision ahead of the club and go out with his reputation intact.

By all means, the Club can utilize his experience and skills off-field,

I think Lewy will be doing plenty of work on the leadership front. I don't think he needs a title per se for people to pay attention to what he says. No cocky 20 y.o. would dare ignore him if he were to pull him into line. This is based on reputation alone.

That being said, perhaps it's time to put someone else in the leadership group. Plenty of people are gunning for him after the prelim and it might not be best to have a target on his back. No way is he not in our best 22 next year but I say now is the time for him to fly under the radar.

Lever for mine would be ideal but we need to see him play a full season in the ones first.

I personally would also like to see Jack ascend to the sole captaincy. I was under the impression that his co captaincy with Nate was a stepping stone from taking on the main job solo. Nate soon will most likely move to a flank and won't be in a position to work on set ups. 

If that is to be however, I expect the club to be consultational. Nate needs to buy into it.

Apologies to Lever and May. I'd look at them coming in to the leadership group from 2020 onwards, probably at the expense of Jones (if he retires) or simply as an extension of the leadership group.

Lever, is impressive even captaincy material. 

However, I think 4 or 5 are enough in the group. 

I would allow May to get a season under his belt and probably Lever.

Can see the benefits of dual captaincy and would consider it if that's how it looks in preseason. Viney obviously needs to get himself 100% right and it's impossible to know from the outside how the relationships between these guys and younger players are.

LG - T McDonald, May, Jones

If he settles in well and has the right work ethic and respect with the group I'd throw May in. If he plays anywhere near his best he'll be the leader of the backline, he should have the title. T Mc leads the forward line. Gawn/Viney the mids. Jones should stay in even if he's not locked in the best 22 or playing a vital role because a veteran with the connection to the younger players is important.

I couldn’t find an existing thread on this - I’m simply interested in hearing everyone’s views.

What’s the likely composition of this year’s leadership group?

Viney and Jones as Co-Captains?

Gawn, Lewis, T Mac, Lever and May in the mix for other positions?

That's a good list Ron, but think Lewis might drop out as he'll be really fighting to hold his spot this year. I think Brayshaw might come in, he looks to me to be a real leader for the future.

Vanders and Jetta will be new inclusions into the leadership group in my personal opinion.

Smokey could also be Alex Neale Bullen. Reports from last year was he had been given an unofficial leadership role up forward.

Lewis is the interesting one for me, keep him in or is he out? I’m struggling to see how he plays 22 games. He will give himself every opportunity, his experience is invaluable, but surely it’s a positive sign when he’s getting pushed out of the 22. 

My smokey to be included is Harmes. His emergence on the back half of the year was nothing short of phenomenal. His finals series was A+, probably our best in the prelim too.

I’m thinking it’ll be co-captains again this year. The idea of Viney as sole captain next year is logical but I wouldn’t be surprised if Max is elevated to sit beside Viney and co-captain model continued.

VC: Gawn

Others: Tmac, May, Vanders, Jetta. 

I believe May is a logical choice for the back half with the removal of Lewis. Jetta is just too inspirational to ignore any longer and I love Vandenberg setting the tone with crunching forward half tackles and hard bumps to help get the team up when needed.

The player that has become a leader on and off the field and shows it so strongly is Neville Jetta a no nonsense person that had to restart his career as a rookie and fight his way back on to the list and be in our best 22. Leads by example.

A WA product that became a loyal Dee.  IMO a co Vice Captain would be just reward. A true Champion person.

My favourite player... for the reasons you've stated, and IMO he was used poorly under changing regimes at our club, during our own inner hell.

I have little doubt that Harmes will be in the leadership group in the future, the same could also be said of Gus, Trac and Clarry.

But for now I think we should just let these guys play footy and let them just keep developing their leadership skills and status quietly in the background.

I wasn't so sure I liked the co-captains thing, but watching the way Jones and Viney lead the team back down the race after our finals victories, neither of them looked out of place as joint captains, thus I'm quite happy for it to continue.

I really think there is a role in the leadership team for all of T Mac, Nev, May and probably Lever as well.

When you look at our side these days, I think it is really packed full of guys with leadership qualities.  Even when you look at guys like Melksham and Hibberd, Vanders, our young mids/onballers , Billy Stretch/ANB are pretty solid citizens, I think there is plenty there to work with.  It should all bode well for our ability to manage ourselves out on the ground with the lack of the team runner role during play from this comming season and beyond.

I feel as if they are devoted to each other and  the cause  that makes for healthy competitiveness amongst the group. Furthermore the will to do well which in turn makes them all leaders.

I think it's because the Coach sets the direction and the players then go out and act on it. If a team - such as Sydney under Roos - are so well drilled, organised and disciplined then why elevate one player above the rest? To butcher an Army based metaphor if the Coach is the Field Marshall with the right plan then multiple Captains can lead the men. Some players stand out - like Luke Hodge - as the individual General capable of leading all the players but it's not like they are controlling games by themselves.

On field leadership requires multiple players all giving the same direction and ideally at least one from each area of the ground - forward/mid/back.

If the easiest way to disseminate the coaches message (on and off field) and drive the culture is with multiple players then I'm fine with that. From a practical point of view it also spreads the burden of media commitments, sponsors/members duties, pressures of team vs individual performances and so on.

Agreed. At that level every player would be expected to coach on the ground their team mates, be their eyes in another part of the ground.

Of course this is going to come.mich more naturally to some than others, but that is part of the drafting process now.

In a way this even more backs up my theory of only having one of each. May is a good example, it would be a bit strange to bring a bloke in and instantly make him a captain or vice captain but from all reports he is "the general" of the back line.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it doesn't really matter who the captain is game day, I do remember Chris Judd saying once that he was over being the first to training and last to leave, kicking the footy with sponsor's kids, disciplining the younger kids.

'...lead by your own standard...' - there is a good deal to be said about this; often, it leads to an ultimate leadership position. Just look at Jones, Schwarta, Lyon, Barassi, Flower and a few other elites.
