Or was he talking about someone else?

Yes, his information is that Gawn took an injury into the prelim.

It has been widely reported that Gawn doesn't wear a shin guard and that it does get extremely sore.  Most ruckmen wear them, but he doesn't like them.  I don't know if that's the injury, but it's a possibility.  And, if so, perhaps he should get used to wearing them.

I doubt it would have been his calf, which also was a niggle late in the year.

Apparently we’re into St Kilda’s Ben Long. Haven’t seen much, if anything of him.

Only 21 and was a high ish pick in 2016. Anyone have any info?

Nephew of Michael Long, related to Rioli family.

Essendon also interested.

"The hard-nosed forward has impressed since being the No.25 pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft and only a broken right foot prevented him playing more than 10 games this year".

"AFL.com.au understands the 21-year-old's preference is to stay at the Saints and he is contracted for next year, but his name has been raised in trade discussions this week".

Part of the Kent trade, perhaps.

Saints twitter has not surprisingly nixed this already. Has impressed when he's played.

Yep, very good pedigree.

Interesting to read this earlier. He's never quite seemed at the level for mine, but still only 21, so I'd back the FD in here. If true, we clearly think he could provide good competition for ANB, Spargo and any of those pressure forwards on our list. Spells a bit of danger for Garlett's place on the list too. I wouldn't mind Long on a wing either.

With Beams allegedly requesting a trade back to Collingwood for family reasons (is it just me or is that a weak cop out - he used it to get out in the first place which is fine but now he's using it to get back?), Collingwood's midfield would be bloody good, but very old. They'd have that small window to win a flag, which I suspect they're well aware of with their aging list, but there's a bit of Geelong about them forming.

Pendles, Sidebottom and Beams are all near the ends of their career. If they don't win it next year, I reckon they might have missed their chance with their current list.

I find it hard to see how they will fit Beams into their cap when they can barely fit a player like Langdon in at the moment. Also how will they have the trade currency to bring Beams across? What picks or who would they be looking to ship out to fit Beams in?

They were going to fit Lynch in, so I can’t see how they won’t fit Beams in

Beams seems like exactly the sort of person that good sides are trying to avoid like the plague. Good player obviously, but comes with a huge amount of baggage.

Fremantle are trading pick 6 to port for pick 10 and a pick in the 20’s..

Obviously there’s a reason they’re doing this, but on the face of it that’s a horrible deal.

Pick 6 is worth 1,751 points.

Pick 10 is worth 1,395 and pick 23 is 815 totalling 2,210.

So on the points system they would win....

So if they get 5 for Neale, it looks like 5 and 10 for Hogan perhaps?

Everyone very quiet on the Beams front...

Maybe Lions have decided that now they have Neale, Beams isn't so important, will leave in a year or two anyway, so trade him out whilst there is interest and can get a good trade value.

It might be a case of 'careful what you wish for' on Beams' part!

Josh Daicos still without a contract at the Pies. Any chance we have a nibble?

James Rose and Jack Lonie maybe the best of the other small forwards without a deal for next year.

Sam Rowe is out of contract & Schoenmakers is a free agent. You could argue making a play for either is not taking your list forward long term. Both could be list cloggers. However they could also give us some insurance and flexibility if we were to get injuries. Schoenmakers is capable of playing back and forward, would most likely play at Casey for the majority of the year. Does anyone think either of these players could fill a spot on the list ahead of someone like Tim Smith?

I'm pretty sure he copped a heavy knock to his leg very late in the Semi-Final. Not sure it's something to get too concerned over though, just that we need a backup because if Gawn goes down we're screwed ruck-wise.

So they get 6 from Brisbane for Neale, they trade 5 to Port and get 10 & 20s pick, then use 20s pick for Lobbe. They then give us 6 & 10, we give 10 for May and use 6 on the next best kid in the draft. Well if Hogan goes & May has to come in, at least we have an early pick (6) to get a jet. I'm resigned to that, but if Brisbane demand 6 and we cave I'll spew. As much as I now hate them, Freo end up with an early pick & Hogan, but loose a gun midfielder. We loose a gun forward but gain May & an early pick. Would've preferred  5&6, never really considered May, he's nearly 4 years older than Hogan. Oh well we better stitch up the Weed on a long term deal.

Port could be sitting on a potential gold mine if they end up shipping Wingard off to the Dogs for pick 7.

That would place them with picks 6,7,10 which would then enable them to hand over to GC for picks 2,3.

If they end up with pick 5 from May that would set their club back up again.

5,6,7,10 incredible.

How are they getting 5 while retaining 6, 7 and 10?

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
