Cmon man... 8 year contract we could demand 5 first rounders or no deal. Lol

The length of contract should have no effect of the price paid in terms of picks.

but of course it does. per year and duration signal a very clear indication of how much  a player is valued, which in turn helps dictate what his trade value would be. It certainly does for compensation pick evaluation

in this case freo (acc to morris) only want a 4 year contract and hogan's mgmt is asking for 8 years, which might very well be just an ambit position, assuming morris is correct of course.

Surely you would think before they entered into trade negotiations with Melbourne that they would had the contract drawn up and decided upon. How is it they could possibly enter negotiations and still be deciding on length and $$$?!

Who is his right mind would sign an 8 year contract these days.

Agree...smells like total bullshlt eh.

In general I agree with you.  However it would be naive to assume that none of them have agendas.  Most of them are not real journalists who have a code of ethics.  They are ex-player and members of boys clubs.  Many of them probably suck up to individuals at clubs and that may influence their 'reporting'.  So if one of them has a clear history of bias, I don't think a tin foil hat is needed.  Personally I don't follow any of them. I barely recognise their names.

But when has that happened with the Jesse Hogan situation? If Pavlic weighed in on the situation, sure i'd take it with a massive grain of salt. But no journo, Mclure or Morris included, are out to get Melbourne, neither is montagna.

Poor little freo.  Are they expecting Melbourne to say sorry for Hogan's big bad manager wanting the highest possible contract for his guy?

I can't see how this in any way makes Freo not look terrible, upset player, manager and club, it's dumb.

quite.

but don't forget there has been a big change in management at freo very recently

Well at least Watson played the game & was actually good.I hate the McLures,Nixons etc that wouldnt even know what a Football looked like.

If the 8 mill over 8 scared off freo, then hogan will come back to us with his tail in between his legs, just like Dusty did when GWS knock him back, and Richmond re -signed him for peanuts. This will be a huge dent to his ego, this might DRV him to extended his contract with us.

Me thinks Tom Morris has become Freo's mouthpiece. The logic of the article is off.

'Jesse came to us and said he was relatively keen, but wanted $8mil over 8 years. I mean, it's not like he's a good player or we are poo, so how dare he?! Then Melbourne asked for 2 first rounders as well! Not like he's a good player or anything. Must be a trap! So we offered a first rounder and a second, and when they said no we rejected their trade (?) And now we are really angry if people question if we are bluffing, coz we are definitely not trading for him... but if Melbourne cave we will do a trade.'

Tom not the sharpest tool in the shed.

No, just a tool plain and simple

I know nothing of the journos you mention.  But they don't have to be "out to get MFC" to promote our adversary's cause.  They just have to be sucking up to someone at the other club.  I doubt if many of them have any devotion to truth.  They are in a matey culture.

I think the Bell has tolled on this deal. Can't see it happening but I could still see us acquiring Steven May.

Nixon played for Richmond. He did OK.

Can we stop calling any journalist that has an opinion we disagree with a "Secret agent for XYZ club" or a "Melbourne hater". its just not true. These guys may be wrong, but there's no hidden agenda, take off the tin foil hats.

I think you'll find that while journalists aren't Secret agents for XYZ, they're certainly able to be manipulated by clubs.

The journalists get their info from sources within the clubs and player management. Some interpret what their told to hopefully get close to objective reporting, others, like JM, roll out club propaganda. Wittingly or not.

TBH, I'm not sure what's worse, wittingly reporting club propaganda or not having the wits to realize that you're doing it.

Have a read of the article though, it's absurd. Reads as Freo suspect something is not quite right because... Jesse, his management and the MFC are acting as though Jesse is in fact a star forward.

Once someone has expressed a desire to play for Fremantle under Lyon, does 'right mind' really bear consideration?

This is just crazy.

Its like a total lack of common sense and the dumbing down of society .

Why are there so many idiots masquerading as AFL, managers, list managers, Club employees and Media?

Does your head in.

Spoken like a true lurking Fox Footy 'reporter'.

Seriously though, while I agree they may not be pushing a hidden agenda, it is entirely possible they are being fed by a particular club for a reason.

Seriously though, what is more likiley:

A) Us, die hard melbourne supporters, over rate Hogan's value and/or Melbourne's power in this situation.

B) A neutral Journo who studies all clubs, players and trades, AND whose livelihood depends on them being good at their job, being untruthful on purpose.

BTW, i think Hogan was worth pick 6 & 7, or 6 and brayshaw/cerra.

Nothing surer than 6.15pm on Wednesday under the bright lights

‘Hogan to Fremantle on 6 year, $6,000,000 deal.’

Hogan’s manager is deluded. Nobody is worth 8 years. Nobody! That is an insane risk to take in such a combative sport, especially for someone with back and now foot issues.

Maybe they were trying to play on Freo’s desperation and see how far they can push their luck. Maybe he doesn’t really wanna go there and is using it as a way to block the deal or raise his price with Melbourne.

Either way this whole thing stinks and I would be very annoyed with Hogan if his unrealistic management stand in the way of our list improving AND he refuses to sign a long term deal with us.

How about 6, 7, Brayshaw and Cerra?

OK, I will be charitable and say 3 of 4.

How? We do not have the currency in terms of draft picks to offer CGS particularly when it seems that it was only the acquisition of pick 5 holding the deal up. If we could get him for anything else we would have.

We'll have to wait until the next trade period if we want May.

But crappy journalism exists in all area's of news, but it doesn't mean its due to manipulation or secret relationships, or even favouritism. It's just an opinion that may be way off.

EDIT: having read the article i see nothing wrong with it.... where's the problem?

Wasn't L Franklin's Sideney deal for 8 years?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
