Hogan will never be a defender. He does not play like one, his defensive pressure is poor, he has a turning circle like the Queen Mary and his second efforts are non existent. He is simply not agile enough.

Now replace Hogan's name with Jeremy McGovern's.

Now think about what they are being asked to do. Hogan, in his limited time in the midfield, actually does play like a defender.

The premiership is not reliant upon Jesse. Might be just me but the club's view is we are better balanced and structured without him....hence they are NOT seeking to replace like with like.

Seems many are just trying to find him a role to keep their fav player.

Forward ...back...on the wing.. anywhere...just keep Jesse...

It's hilarious.

Get the job done Dees

How do you know the club think we are better balanced and structured without him? Guessing?

He will likely go home at some point so we are trying to get the best deal for him.

Replace him like for like? That’s the whole point, there are no Jesse Hogan’s out there. He is a gun young player that imo opinion will dominate the comp over the next 5 years.

It’s on the MFC website.

The article is entitled ‘Melbourne is waiting upon a reasonable Freo offer’ or something similar.

that title doesn't mean Hogan requested the trade, and I can't find the article.    As I belatedly edited my earlier post:

On the club website:

"He's got to make up his mind whether he wants to leave," Mahoney said.

Which means that it was not a simple request to return.

Without a direct quote from JM saying JH requested a trade, I'll assume it was mutual discussion, possibly initiated by us thinking if he leaves next year it's better for us for him to leave now and prodding JH.  Or possibly JH asking the club how we'd feel about him moving west now.  Not a direct "I wanna get out of here'.

What I find distasteful is Freo's reference to discontinuing the 'due diligence' process, implying there is something wrong with Jesse or his character.

If there is something wrong don't make an offer.  If there isn't, don't infer something that people then start to claim he is 'damaged goods'.   Rumours take on their own 'fake news sort of truth' that then need to be disproven.  In a way it becomes guilty till proven innocent.  An impossible catch-22!

I don't know what is behind this talk of 'damaged goods' or if there is any truth in it and I don't really care but this campaign to besmirch Jesse's character to drive his trade value down is extremely unpleasant.

Whoever he plays with, I hope he does a Dusty (after he was rejected by other clubs a few years ago for being 'damaged goods') and shows everyone his mettle and becomes the star he is capable of being.

“Jesse came to us and said he wants to explore the opportunity," Mahoney said.”

Seems pretty clear to me.

He would be stupid not to have explored it.

If an offer was presented to me or an opportunity arose elsewhere I’d certainly explore that opportunity. Doesn’t mean I’d take it, it could help me get a better deal with my current employer.

Tom Browne also inferred there could be off-field issues.

But look mate, it doesn't matter what you think of these individuals I don't believe they've simply made things up.

They've been told.  So, in essence, whether they're flawed individuals or not, it doesn't matter.

It does matter..

It particularly matters if you are going to use it to back up your argument.

Their history is of getting a lot of things wrong, it goes to the veracity of what they are saying.

They may well have been told but who told them? the taxi driver? Peter from Peterborough?

I get your argument for moving Jesse on and picking up May. it's pretty solid.

This sort of stuff as to why Fremantle baulked at the deal is just guesswork.

If Jesse really wanted to be at Melbourne he would’ve signed a longer deal.

The guy really wants to go home, it’s the only reason we are trying to trade him.

We do however need something decent in return to address our needs.

I think he is a star and would love him to stay, but if his heart ain’t in it, what ya gonna do?

I'm not certain he actually requested a trade. His management said that he was happy with either outcome

happy to go, happy to stay ??????????????

he certainly requested mfc to organize a trade, he just didn't go public, but most never do until an agreement is reached

i think he crossed the rubicon

OK, but that is just the second possibility I listed.    It's not as strong as flat-out requesting a trade and that is re-enforced by:  "He's got to make up his mind whether he wants to leave," Mahoney said.

Not that it really matters. It seem clear that JH is (or at least was) ambivalent and now only time will tell.

Ricky Nixon weighing in now?! That guy is the sediment at the bottom of a sewerage plant. Absolute scum of the earth. Why is he being allowed oxygen still??

If Hogan stays, hopefully he signs on long term. He’s a gun forward and the best result for us is retaining him and locking him in.

You mean not only shouldn't he be allowed on twitter he should also be terminated ?

It seems a lot of people are determined to have his mindset as either staying or going. It is possible to be in two minds, particularly when there’s the go home factor/family vs the team you’ve started with and is more likely for success.

I’m comfortable with the fact he requested to Melbourne he be allowed to explore his options. As many have said the club, while ideally wanting to hold onto Jesse, saw it as a chance to get value for him and address a need.

But he’s also been mature through this process totally understanding that we wanted a fair trade for him and that he’d be happy to stay with us.

What has changed is that now that the club that has been courting him has botched this deal I’d like the club to push him to sign an extension. This speculation is a distraction and it’s something we don’t need. I have zero animosity towards Jesse and the club and the fans need to get around him rather than belittle him.

Preferably.

There’s too much in this thread to catch up on. Given Freos statement, is this now don’t and dusted or do we believe there’s is more to play out and it’s just an unprofessional and lame bluff?

Can we get May without the Hogan trade? I doubt GC would give him up unless it was for a top 10 lick considering he’s a free agent in a years time and they’d get better compo then.

yes you can be in 2 states of mind, but this necessarily means you are not fully committed.

if it falls through and he makes up his mind and extends his contract then well and good

if it fall through but he doesn't extend then we have a definite not fully committed player for 2019

he's had his cake and eaten it up till now, but this can't continue into 2019 for the good of the mfc

The club and all of the supporters were around him. 110% around him.

Hogan then approached the club to sound out the potential for a trade to Freo (which was the subject of rumour, innuendo and speculation for years previously).

That introduces cracks into the mirror in any relationship. Regrettably I think things have changed now.

Freo claimed that Melbourne were asking for too high a price in terms of picks and they also alluded to the whole "due diligence" suggesting "other issues". I still believe they would have taken Jessie with his "due diligence" issues if we only asked for 2 second rounders.

They can go shove their "due diligence".

If it's more than smoke and the reason Freo have withdrawn their offer it looks like Jesse stays and we make the most of the situation.

No point talking about what's not going to happen now or next year.

If it's a problem this year and that's what they're pointing to I can't see Jesse wanting to go there next year or at any time, they've burned him.

Looks like we've got him and what ever the issue is we will need to sort out, if there is one.

My hope is that he now stays he could be awesome 4 us as a defender or ruck rover/ forward.
