Our issue is the game plan!

 

We have a super talented list but the next step for the MFC will be purely based around the instructions from the coaching staff.

 

All our losses see us winning the inside 50 count (I’m not sure if this stat is misleading by Shallow entries or we kick it blind to the top of the square) and getting scored on heavily(by %) for the oppositions inside 50. 

Now we had massive issues with hitting targets today but the stat was 21 inside 50s for 13 scoring opportunities and 3 inside 50s for 3 goals in the third qtr which seems to be our biggest issue. 

 

Who knows what what the solution is but working out how to change the system to avoid iit is so important as nearly every loss we have had included these characteristics.

A million rubbish handballs and absent work rate aren't part of the game plan.

Sure, it needs some tinkering but I think the game plan has really stood up in the latter half of the season.

Critical judgements of game-plans cannot give an accurate indication of strengths or weaknesses, from a game where our boys simply were not in the mind state to perform at their best.

Trying to make critical judgements on such games, is a waste of time.

The game-plans these days are tinkered with constantly, based on personnel available in the 22.

Things always look shite when they aren't quite working.

It was pretty obvious from the opening few minutes that we weren't working as hard or as manically to shut down their space, which gifted them the opportunity to pick and hit targets almost at will...…...the fumbles and missed handballs cost us dearly and were a 'tell' of the pressure we put ourselves...….some of them (Oliver) was without even being tackled.

Not disappointed in the loss......just the way we lost we lost the first half.

That happened again today but it was nothing like those other earlier losses.

In those early games we dominated possession through the middle, dominated clearances and CPs, turned those into a dominance of inside 50s, but failed to score. Today we couldn't get our hands on the ball.

The only reason we won the inside 50 count is because West Coast took their foot off the pedal in the second half.

A game plan built around the sum of the individual abilities of available players is the key to being competitive.

A game plan that can be readily overwhelmed like today is not a good game plan.

The boys tried as hard as they could but were beaten by a better prepared team that had worked out how to stymie our strengths and frustrate our game style. Foot passes went nowhere, handpasses were sloppy and chopped. That Kennedy and Darling had so much space to lead was because we were spread too wide. They did to us what we have done to others - smothered our play in the first half.

We'll learn. The coaches have a lot of thinking to do.

Although we missed heaps of handballs our game plan is to play on at all costs and handball forward.

 

We also are very aggressive with our running so if a turn over occurs we don’t have any coverage at the back. This results in a high score to inside 50s

Grand statements like this would carry a lot more weight if they were posted prior to a big loss.  Our gameplan has been lauded for the past four rounds... where were these observations then??

The coaches haven’t failed they just need to work out the balance and how to stop the easy scoring.

 

it could be that we want a shoot out and are happy to concede the easy scores out the back but believe they will struggle to get it past the wing (current plan I believe) and that works for our scoring plans.

 

I think its it’s too high risk/ high reward and changes are needed for the next step as you can’t have an off day and still win

We didnt have that marking target on the wing that collingood had in cox last night. If we can use weeds in this way and have hogan back we can get better overhead. Too many errors today but i also see that we lack strength on the air generally.

We played the game before the first siren sounded.  You could see it on their faces.

Go have a look at the can Goodwin coach thread. That is the issue raised there. 

 

The question marks around round his coaching (or my question marks) was will he adjust his game plan or will he follow it at all costs.

 

I think he has answered the first question as it has been adjusted since the middle of the season but I think it still needs to be changed to have success on off days. 

 

Its high risk/high reward and we could of won it this year but I don’t think we have the ability to adjust if the opposition get on top or we have a slightly off day.

Can’t agree.  Our game plan is contested possession to get the ball forward and then protect it coming back.  But we were smashed in the contest in the first half.

It's nothing to do with the game plan and everything to do with the list profile.

Game plan will be tweaked a bit I'm sure. You can't afford to stand still in this competition, but this is a reactionary call. 

Our forwards didn't tackle, our midfielders didn't tackle and we let their mids walk the footy inside 50.

Terrible effort and no team would have won today with our work rate and intensity.

Execution of game plan today for whatever reason.  WC were 17-0 this season when they lose CP by 11 or less or win it.  We were about -20 first half.  End of story.  All the bad luck, bad turnovers etc were on the back of us having zero experience of losing cp and under so much pressure because of it.  We’ll be back and better next season.

PS Collingwood played an almost identical contested possession game plan last night and exposed Richmond’s weakness.

Game plan is pretty good. 

Pressure based field position attacking defensive set up.

Aggressive ball movement with fast playing on and getting the ball in quickly.

What we need to do is get the balance right between skills and ball winning, and develop the team and list so we have more players with better skills under pressure without sacrificing the ability to win the ball. We have a lot of the pieces but we need to round out the side.

To win a prelim on the road without:
- A reliable key defender
- A reliable dangerous pressure forward
- A quality outside runner

Would've been a massive effort even if the side had turned up!

In the first two weeks, particularly vs Geelong when we needed to calm our early finals nerves, it was TMac who was taking those big marks.

Nowhere to be seen today.

Add Hogan to TMac and Weideman next year and we'll have those marking options.

Don't think "miss the mark with handballs, slip over, don't bother tackling, and kick the ball directly to Hurn or McGovern every time" are elements of the game plan.

The game plan to me is this:

1. Have Gawn tap it down a running mid's throat
2. Failing that, contest the heck out of it
3. If you don't win the ball, make sure the opponent's disposal is under as much heat as possible

It's a game plan that stacks up - in fact, it's what West Coast just smacked us with today. We lost today because we didn't deliver the plan and the very good opposition did.
