Bite Your Tongue!

Dee Zephyr

Recommended Posts

After what seems like forever, Friday night is nearly upon us and I’m sure most Demonlanders have been approached by non -MFC friends, work colleagues or family about our appearance in this year’s finals series.

Plenty of nice comments have come our way and some are genuinely excited and happy for us. I’d like to hear some comments that made you bite your tongue.

Today, I had to bite my tongue when a Hawthorn supporter at work approached me saying that history shows the Melbourne Football Club has no history.??

We won’t worry about the nice comments that have come our way, I’d like to hear some comments that made you bite your tongue.

You clearly informed him of our 160 year history.

There have been a number of crueling  comments directed at my support of the demons over the years. I mainly seem to cop it from Essendon supporters, usually jeering and laughter or Gooooo Deeeeeees.

But actually over the past few weeks thats subsided, in fact its unusually quiet. Even my normally boisterous Cat mates are very quiet indeed.

To be fair, everyone does it to every other team (well almost everyone). Many people still bag on the tigers, even though they are reigning premiers. But comments that make me want to vent out include "weak mentality, fragile, making up the numbers, soft" etc. seems to be a theme of non competitive and not tough that gets me ready to say a few words, but then i remember the cheese wont prepare itself for the finals

They're nervous, as they should be.

Seems to be some bitterness from some opposition supporters now that the demons have climbed out of the gutter. I think for the longest time it has been easy to dismiss the Demons as a non threat, and they have really enjoyed sticking the boot in.

All of a sudden the Dees are like the unpopular/unattractive girl at school who develops and overtakes all the mean girls for attention. We are now the threat, and the jealousy of other supporters is real.

I'm only hearing happiness for us.  Even relative strangers are pleased to see us come good and be in finals.  Yes, even Collingwood supporters of which sadly I know quite a few.

We are the Cinderella of the AFL.  We finally get to go the Ball!  Any neutrals at our finals will be barracking for us.  Wait and hear the roar!!

Completely agree! I don't think I've come across anyone against the Dees. Not even particularly neutral. All mates without a vested interest in the finals have been very pro Dees going all the way. Some have even told me they don't mind the Dees getting up over their own team, if it comes to that!

We are the Cinderella, but there will be nothing sweet about our performance tonight. I haven't been this excited about a game in a long time. I'll be there adding to the roar!

Not a recent experience but I think this is a good place for this.

At the QBH game a Collingwood friend of mine (or rather the wife of very good Collingwood friend) started hazing me in our whatsapp group before the game with “what’s that sh*t you’re wearing?” referring to my MFC jumper in a selfie I took. She went on to post selfies of her and her husband in their cute Collingwood jumpers with the caption ‘correct team’.

I’ve had many years of this kind of excrement being thrown my way and never batted an eyelid, but for some reason this one has stuck in in my craw all year and I have no idea why. It could be the Collingwood factor, it could be that copping this crap was easier when we were garbage and that now we are relevant it’s different, it could be that she’s one of these people who didn’t know what Collingwood was 5 years ago before she met her hubby and has since embraced them and made out like she knows everything. I really don’t know but I will be quite glad if nubs like this now have a better idea of who we are.

Are they a member? If so, ask them when their master is next taking them out for a walk?

Hold tight and when the time comes - if it comes - perhaps one day if we beat the Pies or go further and win a Premiership - send a selfie with your jumper with the caption ‘Premiership Team’

Please also remind him that he follows " the Family Club" -   and their history is one that rips out $20M in poker machine revenue in the Waverley area and are not relinquishing them -  as the MFC is and the Roos have.

The highest and longest of any club.

"Family"  club my arse!

People at my work a few weeks ago said they love Melbourne and hope they make finals (when it was looking unlikely). Now that we’re in it, had two big wins and looking scary they’ve changed their tune. I get the “I hate Melbourne” “the media overhyped them so I can’t stand them”

I like to take it as we’re a threat this finals series and they’re worried. We all like the teams that most likely won’t beat us. Times have changed and I love it.

Myself and the old man are demons and Mum and two sisters are cats supporters. They will be happy for Melbourne if we beat them with my younger sister declaring she is actually at about 70/30 with wanting the cats wo win.

Mum can't understand why I dislike Geelong so badly even after I support that with evidence of Dangerfield, Selwood and Ablett all flopping about and drawing high contact for dubious free kicks.

Mum actually referred to me as a wnaker the last time I had a crack at Geelong so it was good to know I'm making solid progress.

I have a mate who's a Cat supporter and quite genuinely concerned about facing us on Friday.

I'm really hoping that we come with the same sort of physicality to finals that we did against West Coast and the Giants and that we really maul some teams (within the rules).  Not sure we can go all the way this year, but if we don't go all the way, then I at least we go down fighting.  If we can do that (and I think we have the team to do it), it would build some real confidence for the next season ahead and shut some people up a bit.

GO DEMONS

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
