Yes, it makes more sense if Hogan leaves. It makes some sense if they want to save Gawn from overwork and save his body, it makes more sense if Preuss is destined to switch out of FF with Gawn. Weed and T Mac to work out of CHF and a high target.

Maybe he is the closest we can get to an American giant, who can play forward or ruck.

So is this the Cox effect at Collingwood? The element of a successful side that every other team tries to replicate the following year. Like Richmond's move it forward at all costs and crumb at contests.

Lycett / Vardy effect more like it - Dividing the field into two halves for each. I think we've been enamored by Gawns defensive work the most but also realise we've been robbed of fwd Gawn at same time. I think expectations of repeat Cox performances would be unrealistic on Preuss or Gawn

Goodwin might be thinking of building the most fortress like defence possible next year with potential s. may acquisition and Gawn dropping back. It would explain the reticence to play Frost until late, no real trust. Really wants to shake up and improve our D after witnessing it [censored] the bed for 2 years

I'll take May, but he's a bit of a faux tough guy. The old L Dunn again IMO.

There's absolutely no way Gawn and Preuss can both play with a forward line of Hogan, TMac and Weed.  All those 3 have to play so something has to give there.  Either Weed or Hogan play key back and push Frost out or it's in anticipation of a Hogan trade and resulting restructure.

There has to be consistent structure from week to week so the plan gets settled.  Goodwin is emphatic about playing "our way".  IMO it wont generally work to have Preuss play  just "some of the time".  It's either on or not.  If it is on then we play 2 rucks consistently. If it's not on he could give Max a bye as necessary  but we play one ruck consistently and rarely or never play 2.

I love the idea of Preuss as ruck depth but I'm sceptical of the consistent 2 ruck plan - it costs an extra midfield runner.  An in match injury to a mid leaves us very top heavy and stretches rotations to breaking point.

There was a clear move in last year's off-season for all of Gawn, Hogan and Pedo to alter their body-shapes in an effort to enhance endurance and mobility. Is this even possible for someone with the bulk of Preuss? Are we basically looking for someone who can be adapted as a Pedo upgrade and can work in tandem with Max roaming up the wings out of full-forward?

Physically intimidating and still highly mobile, and once again solving a co-ordination gap within the game plan.

For the midfielders, it also represents a decreased running distance and duration as I could never expect us - in the current game plan of occasional possessions from an almost continuous supply of long bombs - to master the 'eyes-up' transfers that we so urgently need.

It will improve the target zone for this style of play no end, and provide a range of alternative slots/roles/contributions of the talls we have and who are used at present in a largely static manner for the 'hope and the prayer' to produce a result. If we are currently the highest scoring team in the comp, we are going to be a full light year ahead of this statistic with better usage of the talls in diverse role plays. The Weed, for example, might become the new 'Breust' or 'Smith'-style of player rather than a locked in, static, occasional deep forward. It may well be very exciting... another example is the current change of the game play of Hogan - forced to become a mobile big around the fwd half of the ground; if there were two in this function, watch out, the Filth. Then, with the advent of the return of Lever, and the strengths of our current backmen, things may well happen.

 

I am a little bit sheltered from Melbourne media these days but is the 6 6 6 rule still going ahead next year? 

If so this makes complete sense as center clearances will become more important than ever... If you win first possession & can get the ball to even numbers inside 50 weight of numbers will just mean you will score. 

The center clearance all starts with the ruck man... now Maxy cannot do it the entire game so imagine having Pruess coming in 30% ruck time rucking against some of the other teams second ruck men... we are talking Grigg, Boyd, Roughhead, Hawkins, Jenkins (off the top of my head). Not only would we win first hands on the ball 85-95% of the time with Maxy dominating the first ruck men we really should win at least 75% of clearances...

I'm not so sure. If you set up properly, that clearance we all love (not) of just throwing it on the boot forward, only to be intercepted by the spare in defense, may just become a weapon. 2 talls about 40m out on 45 degree-ish angles to go pretty much one on one. Moloney would've loved it.

Just thinking out loud, but I reckon there'll be quite a few goals scored in quick time with that rule. I can see why broadcasters want it, but I'd say the football community will blow up and it'll only last a year.
