Lord Neville X Flash 284 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 (edited) I think this game will hinge on a few crucial area's: 1) Geelongs defence love high predictable kicks. Stewart and Blicavs have made the AA squad by intercepting these poor forward 50 entries, and Harry Taylor is a veteran that has been doing this for years. SOLUTION: Lower our eyes going forward and take the short forward 50 entries, rather than put it to the top of the square. 2) Danger, Ablett, Selwood and Kelly: These guys are devestating when let of the leash, and 3 are proven September specialists. Last game we let Kelly and Ablett amass 20touches in the 4th quater which ultimatley lost us the game. SOLTUTION: Don't let Kelly and Ablett sit run forward unmarked. Send Harmes to Selwood, and have Viney mind danger at stoppages. 3) Hawkins. He killed us last game, and it wasn't necessarily OMAC's fault. SOLUTION: Midfield Pressure, and we need Gawny to push back into the hole as often as he can. 4) Let our offence and contested ball do the talking. From memory Hibberd did not play last time, you can use in him to provide cover for Frost/OMac and reduce Hawkins' output. Id rather use Maxy as a resting forward. Quote

buck_nekkid 6,101 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 I think Max will dominate the ruck. We have to hold our spread off the contest otherwise the 'waltzers' of the cats will pinch our hard won ball. Harmes to run a shut-down role, and be dangerous the other way like against GWS. Frosty to get Hawkins, with license to run off him when we have it. Forward set-up: stop the high bombs. Use Weid to get the ball to ground with a small forward ready to pounce. set up 6 v 6 and trust our midfield. Tactically, we only got beaten by then because we let their midfield stagers back in late in the game. We cannot have them strolling away from contests. I am not so worried about the uncontested mark issue (we fixed that in Q2 vs GWS, and it really made a difference), I am more worried about their ability to get outside us at the contest and deliver to a 1:1 in 50. I also see the umps loving the 'big names' of Geelong and being at a 12-18 point disadvantage before we start. (Take a look at the HTB against nev this week not paid, and paid the other way. Lucky for a poor kick). Quote

I like Maxy pushing forard also but he has been damaging dropping back into the hole and so a bit of both for mine 1 Quote
Watson11 2,252 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 I'd like Harmes to go to Ablett. He'd nullify him and slaughter him when we win the ball. Quote

He did that (both played on Ablett and slaughter him) last time we played them, but then had to get moved to Dangerfield and Selwood at other times. I'd like to see Viney go to Selwood. The one area that they killed us the other week was their intercept marks. A couple of names were mentioned above, but the other play that had a day out against us was Bews. He often plays loose in defence, and just takes mark after mark. Quote
beelzebub 23,392 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Keep niggling Hawkins.... he'll sook and crack it... effectiveness goes down the drain. Vineys turn to make Danger cry. Harmes can run through that cheating Selwood ( a few times to be sure ) 2 Quote
jshc__ 54 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Viney to Ablett, imagine he still has nightmares from Round 1 a few years ago when Viney crunched his shoulder early on. Soft [censored] won't go near it with Viney breathing down his neck at stoppages. 2 Quote

Or else Harmes on Ablett then run off him? We should remember too they'll be looking to nullify Oliver Viney and Brayshaw Gee I am nervous Quote

Jones 62 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Their midfield runs deep - Ablett, Dangerfield, J. Selwood, S. Selwood, Duncan, Kelly, Menegola etc. Posed questions - Where will Taylor play? Forward or back? Same goes for Jack Henry and Ratugolea. Ablett and Dangerfield will push forward at times. They are the best defensive team and we are the best attacking team (statistics wise). It would suit Dangerfield. 1 Quote

titan_uranus 25,255 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Stanley beat Gawn lasts time, but I don’t think Stanley will be fit for this final. We also get Hibberd and hopefully Viney back, both of whom missed last time. Need to keep their star mids as quiet as possible and take our opportunities when they arrive. They likely can’t be as accurate and as fortuitous as they were in the fourth in Geelong but they mightn’t be as slack as they were for the rest of that game, either. 4 Quote
dl4e 5,851 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 I have a feeling they may go through the midfield with long kicking. Like they did against Richmond. We will have to play man on man and wait for them to stuff up their ball movement ( which they will playing a fast break game ) and punish them that way. We owe those $^&@#$%. Yes they are an arrogant bunch and as for that coach well he can go and do you know what. 4 Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Need to peel off and get 3rd man in on Hawkins as much as possible. They will look to feed him at most opportunities. And for the love of god put some attention into Menzel, we've been cut up twice by him now. If Zac Smith comes in I'm confident Max can do the biz. I see real use for AVB in this game, get in their faces. Quote

If taylor plays forward i'd go: Menzel - Hibbard Taylor - OMAC Hawkins - Frost (this scares me, even though Frosty has been amazing) 1 Quote
tiers 2,883 Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 In round 1 they had a field day dealing with our long bombs to the goal square. They set up so well that the ball comes out as fast as it goes in. As hard as it is to say, without Jesse there should be fewer long bombs and more deliberate passing. It has been a perennial problem but without Jesse at full forward it should stop. Jesse should never play inside 50 as his real talent is let free when in the midfield/chf position. Quote
