Kent and Weideman have a great opportunity that didn't look likely a few weeks ago. Spargo, Spargo, Spargo... I think he is cooked. Evidently, the club doesn't agree. Huge stakes. Garlett has been struggling. I like Kent in particularly if he is in form. Quote

If Jeffy is out of form, he gives nothing Quote

Let's face it, the sport is now about creating a stoppage, winning the stoppage, controlling possession and then a having a shot at goal. Controlling the possession is not our strength but invariably it is a strength. Turn the ball over and lose and you'll see a change of personnel. In Goodwin's team, a player can't run past a contest or turn the ball over as a primary weakness. But if you're not great, you have to play blokes who aren't that good. Quote
napster 191 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Spargo, with his weak kicking very lucky to stay in. 10 disposals at 60% efficiency, so 6 effective disposals. JKH 14 disposals at 100% efficiency so 14 effective disposals, a big difference. He did some good things, can provide a good link, and was a long way from our worst (see ANB and or Garlett). I think he’s mostly done his bit since he came back in. He seems to be the selector’s whipping boy, given little leeway compared to others like Hannan and Garlett who until recently had to play a whole string of poor games before they got the chop. For a change, Garlett’s game v Sydney was so bad that in itself it brought about his omission. Of JKH and Spargo, Spargo should have been given a rest, but I’d prefer either of them to Hannan. I think Hannan’s busy running style creates an impression that he’s fast, but then see the foot race with Lynden Dunne on Queen’s Birthday. Regarding tackling pressure, the last game the three of them played together was v the Dogs, Spargo 7 tackles, JKH 8, Hannan zero. 1 Quote

Spargo needs a rest, has struggled with tackles and kicking 30 m plus in the past 3 seasons plus. He will be a weapon in time but not this year. Quote

Macca 17,127 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 The Eagles sit where we sit ... average/above average and sometimes quite good. The same argument could be put forward for another 8 sides. There are no great teams although the Tigers are playing like a great team but I still see them as quite beatable. We've got a great opportunity to beat a team who are where we are ... they are not a great team and Goodwin will be pressing that point home. We have to start well and out-muscle them out of the middle - play to our strengths. It's do-able. 2 Quote

You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't apply it your just a waste of space. I'd prefer a talented player who works hard over just a hard worker. But if the more talented player isn't working hard you take the hard worker everytime. At least you know the hard working player will be accountable and play a role defensively. It's something you can never guarantee with Garlett, he picks and chooses when he puts in defensive effort. He has been like that his whole career. It was ok for us when we were a bottom side but it's not enough for a finals team. Quote
Wiseblood 24,637 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 5 changes doesn't smack of desperation. With both Hunt and Hogan injured, and with Hibberd and Melksham returning, we were always going to make a few changes. JKH has been okay without being good, while Garlett has only had one good game, and that was against arguably the worst opposition in the competition. What I like is that we are still rewarding some good form. Weideman and Kent have both been in very good form, with Kent giving us some pace and hardness across half forward, while Weideman ensures that McDonald isn't triple teamed all night and he can be the one to give Maxy a rest. Hannan also gives us another medium sized marking forward who can cause match up headaches and give others a quick chop out through the middle of the ground. Hibberd and Melksham speak for themselves and we are a far better side with them there. These 5 changes are necessary and hardly the sign of desperation. I'd argue that these 5 changes make us a better side, with the exception of Weideman for Hogan (although I'll back the Weid to step up and jag a few this week) and that can only be a good thing. 2 Quote

We drop it regularly but I hope that as our list matures we will stop that. I've been entertained this year though alot of that comes with frustration and pain. I think we worry most of the other teams. Prefer the ability of this list to compete then others from recent years. Two more games to "enjoy", with a reasonable chance, that is in our own hands to make the final series. 1 Quote

What is your point? Quote
