We were right behind that and my recollection was he did actually have someone close to him. But maybe I'm simply failing to remember correctly?

It would have be nice to read the Herald Sun this morning.  I refuse to unwrap it. 

Omac is safe.  The Boston strangler wouldn’t have stopped Hawkins with lace out delivery and the space he was given in the 50.  Frost was a slightly better option, but we were terrible at defending the middle and the half back, so the rest was downhill for us from there.  Gee we miss Hibbard and Lever.

I think JKH is under the most pressure, and perhaps it is a Bugg who gets the call-up.  Vanders maybe not ready to go yet.

Our forward 50 structure is abysmal.  We are too predictable, and kick on top of people’s heads.  IT takes significant 1:1 efforts to clunk these.  That Irish idiot could have marked that last pass with a damned shopping trolley.  If there was space, Hogan could lead.  But that is not the way we set up.  We run everyone to 30 m out, directly in front, as if it was a ‘how many can you fit in a phone box’ competition.  Geelong cleared out their 50 and let Hawkins go to work.  I would like to see a lot more work done on our structure here.  Hogan would look a lot better with this sorted.

I dont see a spot for Kielty yet.  Frost played OK, and Joel Smith worked hard and did some reasonable things.  Maybe move him up to the wing and bring in Wagner?

Otherwise, its about injuries.  Hibbard walks back in when ready.  Lets see how they pull up (physically).

Agree, I think this needs to be talked about more.

Not being at the game last night, it's hard to know what we were doing at centre bounces in terms of forward set up. But for most of the year we've started with the entire forward line starting 30 metres out from goal and most of them then moving forwards, towards the centre. So when the quick kick comes in from the clearance, it sits on top of the heads of McDonald or Hogan or Melksham or ANB. There's no one starting deep and leading up at the ball carrier.

The same problem seems to apply when we're bringing the ball up from the backline. We seem to always have players at the half-forward line either stationary or hoping to run back towards goal to use the space. We don't have players starting deep and then leading up at us.

Might be controversial but i wouldn't be completely opposed to no change... For all the shattering disappointment, for the most part they played pretty well. Aside from a 5 minute patch where they couldn't touch the footy in the middle.  I think we have a pretty decent balance obviously if Vines was available he would take Tyson's spot as would Hibbard take either Vince or Smith's. But other than that there is no desperate need. Maybe JKH for any of Kent, Hannan or Bugg but all have been inconsistent at best at AFL level. 

But with opportunities quickly evaporating to find enough wins i do wonder if they bite the bullet and Vanders gets a run a week or 2 earlier than they would have planned (not that i think he will help all that much). A loss this week and it will be just about season over baring something absolutely spectacular against the 2 Sydney teams or WC in Perth.

he is a defender. His job is to defend. He fails. The stats don't lie. We are a very poor defensive team. We will probably be the only team in the history of the competition to have the highest 'points for' and miss the finals because our defence is so shiite.

How is anyone suggesting OMac should be dropped?

We don't play 1v1 in the backline anymore. It's not his fault that Hawkins had 20m of space to lead in to, straight at the ball carrier, for the entire last quarter.

Because he is useless and has no physical presence. Would rather see Kielty.

I don't understand the love for Vanders here. Although I appreciated his effort and attack on the ball in 2015 there is nothing about him that makes him an auto in. 

When playing he averaged 15 disposals,  4 tackles and half a goal per game. Nothing special, nothing better than JKH or Hannan. 

He is no more experienced than JKH or Hannan, all with around 30 games. 

He has never played under Goodwin and hardly trained with them, meaning he won't know our system/ structure/ game plan

He may have limited endurance due to his time out of the game.

Agree not to rush him in, but he  has had 48 disposals and 31 tackles, some bone hurting, in  2 VFL games .  That will appeal to the selectors eventually. Also he is 188cms and can play mid or forward and can take a mark and kick a long goal. A few attributes we could use.

But all that is based on either VFL and average AFL form from over 2 years ago in the worst AFL team in history. 

 

JKH has better VFL form and similar statistical AFL performance. I'm not saying that VDB won't perform better but he needs time and needs to demand someones spot first. He isn't a walk up start or necessarily an improvement on existing 22.

Disagree with your extensive analysis of the situation but happy you’ve found your scapegoat. For mine it’s a little more complex than that.

Tried explaining when Garlett was selected, has had 1 good game in almost a season, goes missing for looong periods in a game. Got critized. His 2 cameos a game not enough. JkH said he would be underwhelming got told I should be ashamed.Bugg or AVB would give more effort than both of them. On Oscar still plays zoning game when he should be playing body on body. Pretty hard for anyone to stop those passes Hawkins was getting though.
