Post Match Discussion - Round 14

Play that game at the MCG and have Port 8 points up at 3 qtr time...and Port will win that match by 5 goals plus. Finding a way just isn't for the MFC.

We are what everyone knows we are. The most gettable sporting team going around.

Q: If only we had a good quality fast crumbing forward to bring into the side(!) playing at Casey – Could have made the difference with all the bombing inside forward 50?

(A: Garlett)

#SoMelbourne

It was so congested in the forward line, Garlett would not have been effective. Ball movement needs to improve for any small forward to snag a goal

Do you remember that mark on the line? Or the marks they got 15m out directly in front?

They have multiple tall forwards so no one 'gave us a bath', but they took a lot more contested marks than us. We need tall defenders to be killing those contests on the wings.

Of course.  That happens in a game no matter how many tall defenders you have.

That wasn't our problem.  We kept a high scoring side to 75 points on their home deck.  Defence wasn't the issue tonight.  It's what happened at the other end that is.

Lewis was good

Umpires should wear over ear noise cancelling ear muffs at Adelaide and Perth. Or pick Melb supporting umps to balance it out.

Run of 9 in a row in last quarter

Can’t fault the effort of the team overrall..BUT:

Do us all a favour.....Can Bernie Vince finally be moved on. We have nothing to gain playing him in the side.

Hogan needs to be pulled aside and read the riot act. Break some friggin packs open for [censored] sake! Weak as [censored] performance!

As for Petracca, do us all a favour, drop yourself and [censored] off to Casey to find some form.

ANB may as well be on life support.

Been saying it for years still don't have a freak on our list that wins us that sort of game. No A grade finishes just honest tryers. Petracca ordinary again.

Most of those frees were fair. We were tired and sloppy in the final quarter.

Absolute waste.

We’ll make the finals, enough easy wins in there.

But there aren’t many really good teams this year, we should’ve been aiming for top 4 after those 6 in a row. Unfortunately everyone was right, and we can’t do it against decent sides. Port weren’t even that good tonight, it’s all mental. Good teams would’ve easily put this Port away.

We are the new Port Adelaide, easy work against the bottom 10, can’t beat the top 8.

Can’t pencil in any game mate we very likely to crumble again

As he nearly always is. Will finish in the top 5 of the Bluey again this year.

The detractors can shove it.

That was finals football and we kept up the intensity all night.

Lost out on some equivalent umpiring calls both ways in the final quarter on opposition turf.

Super proud of the boys tonight.

Again, I view this as an important match in our development.

Edit: Cracking footy match btw. I mentioned in the match thread that I would love to see channel seven's viewership numbers after half-time. I doubt many turned off due to the 'boring' low-scoring match.

We didnt kick a goal for the last 30 minutes. Dont see how we kept up with the intensity.

I thought that the umpiring was fair and we played really well and we just couldn't finish it off.

Thats what I thought.

There's always next week.

Yes we were tired. Something wrong here. We have looked tired for the past three rounds with a 9 day break and a bye in between.

And they weren't? I counted 3 x 30m from goal decapitations to Melb in the last. Play on!

Can't argue that he had a rough night, but he was also played much closer to goal all night and got some of the worst delivery inside 50 I've ever seen.  His contribution wasn't solely on him tonight.  The blokes passing him the ball are just as much to blame.

Yes he got some poor delivery but he didn’t jump at the ball he turned his back and tried to rove to the pack. If his name was Joe Blow he would be dropped on his last two games. Let’s be fair about this he was terrible.

I keep banging on about ANB being useless under pressure. When will the selectors see it. I don’t care less about his running he is hopeless against good sides who apply pressure.

Garlett or Spargo for him tonight and we might have won.

Another opportunity lost, and will continue to miss out on others until we get some A grade players into the side with the polish and finishing skills to make an impact.

Give credit to Melbourne regardless of the loss. We are growing and we will be thereabouts this year and many years to come. Even though l and many of us are feeling Gutted . Jack Viney  you are a super star. Proud of all the guys.

great post.

In some ways it reminded me of last year, when we would have the ball in our inside 50 for minutes at a time yet not convert.

Inexperience, lack of composure and polish. We have the fundamentals but need more experience to finish off. A realistic outcome for 2018 would be to make the 8, win a final then next year come back with some of the much needed finishing ability.

As I said to Wiseblood it wasn't just the goals. They took a heap of contested grabs and also got some very soft goals deep because we were under sized.

And yes I watched the game you [censored].

Check the stats and report back how many contested marks Dixon, westhoff and Marshall took? I don’t think it aligns with your perception.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
