Play that game at the MCG and have Port 8 points up at 3 qtr time...and Port will win that match by 5 goals plus. Finding a way just isn't for the MFC.

We are what everyone knows we are. The most gettable sporting team going around.

Absolute rubbish, don't talk [censored] mate

That last 50 that allowed Westhoff to kick the sealer was criminal. Are you not allowed to contest the mark to spoil anymore?

Yeah we shot ourselves in the foot and too many players went missing but the umpiring in the 2nd half was farcical. We probably had the better if it early but not they made up for it later.

Just shattering when you think pretenders like Wingard and Thomas are allowed to have the last laugh.

Another horrible one was the goal that resulted from a Jetta free kick (2nd last one). Yeah he got him high but just prior to that we should have had a free kick for holding the ball forward of centre and then Gray blatantly throws the ball out which created the contest that resulted in the free against Jetta. The umpiribg if this sport is farcical, no accountability, no consistency, no idea

I think you may have missed the most crucial one Gonzo. Vince contests the ball in a pack, and the back of his arm hits someone (then Wingard for goal) entering the pack on follow through. Wtf? Though - Vince: 'I don't care if he's bleeding' - made it at least a fraction amusing. Still, that was the tide there and then.

Been watching soccer and there’s a reason why that game is globally adopted and AFL isn’t.

its rules are clear cut and easy to officiate.

You have fouls and handballs and that’s about it.

AFL On the other hand.....high tackle, sliding, holding the ball, swing tackle, kicking in danger, holding the man, rough conduct, throw..I can go on all night...

You all need to take some pills and leave the umpires alone. Whilst they were ordinary they didn't lose the game for us. WE DID OURSELVES. Never seen a more dominant team for most of the game and lose it. Ollie Wines even mentioned in post match presser with Fox that they stole it. Our forward entries were pathetic and worse still our forwards other than Macca were just as bad. Plenty of soul searching for Trac, Hannan, ANB, Hogan, Harmes plus a few others. They should not be gifted games. Seriously look at Trac and Hogan at Casey next week even if it is to teach them they need to work hard at every contest and actually make a contest for their team mates.

The umpiring was criminal, I'm usually fairly level headed about the umps but tonight they were pathetic. The Melksham one was a momentum shifter, 2 goal turnaround. Not just the ones Port got either but the ones we didn't get were horrible bordering on biased. How many times would they take on a tackler and drop the footy only for play on to be called? How many times were our players scragged before taking possession but nothing, Oliver does it once to Wines and Wines gets a free. Wingard paid a non mark. 50m penalty against Oscar when he was in the air to contest the footy inllat the same moment the Port player is marking it.

Utterly disgraceful, they want to know what's wrong the game, it's the abhorrent standard of officiating with no consistency or accountability

We went inside 50 68 times for 7 marks.

Port went in 39 times for 10 marks.

Now this is partly because we butchered the ball, but they also have 3 big talls to crash packs in Howard (199cm), Clurey (193cm) & Westhoff (200cm) who plays both ends.

We had Oscar (196cm) and Smith (191).

I know we will be better as Petty gets older and we get Lever back, but we really need to find another option down back. Joel Smith is just not good enough to play as a second tall.

How many of their i50 marks came from fast breaks in to open space?

Bunch of fumbling , deer in the headlight losers.

Petracca is absolute garbage.

Petracca has polish. It’s a pity that he uses it on himself though.

Harsh. I thought he came into the game with the right mindset, tried to take the game on but his touch was a bit off. He was better than prior weeks. He went missing after half time but he also copped a knock or tweaked something before that as he was limping a bit in the 2nd.

This time we didn't... but I dunno if it was THAT dissimilar. Lots to like in this game, unlike the Tigers, Hawks and Pies games.

Unlike those games we played with some appetite for the contest.
Now we're all banged up and will limp to the next.

Pretty bloody bog ordinary, mate. Was he injured/sore in the second half? Seemed to go missing for 2 quarters and sat on the bench for much of the last.

I thought his clean hands around the packs early made a big difference, but he lost confidence after the run down tackle and he was chasing Motlop or Polec (poorly) for a fair bit of the game.

He's not the answer to make us better but I thought he wasn't the problem either. Did enough good and bad.

Good summary there AF. Might have skimmed over it, but your thoughts on Tyson after a spell in the magoos?

Useless. Zero awareness, too slow, disposal questionable. Went missing for huge chunks of the game. Back to Casey next week.

Upon immediate reflection, take heart in this...it was an extremely physical finals type game against a finals contender on their patch. Last years premiers lost to this team, at this ground only 3 weeks ago. We fought hard, “should” have won and played a brand of football that puts us in good stead to win these types of contests.

Unfortunately we lacked poise and structure inside our forward 50 to get the job done. Something for our coaching staff to work on.

Im as disappointed as anyone but not all is lost. Make the finals and get on a roll, with some tweaking and an improved forward entry game plan, we will win these types of games in future..

So disappointed in this side. As a supporter it’s hard to take when this team promises so much, yet delivers so little in the big games that count. We should have had the game won by half time given the amount of inside 50’s we had, so there is simply no good excuse for us losing this match. It was not the umpires that beat us, nor the opposition, we lost it because we played dumb football.

I was at the Dogs game 3 weeks ago and watched Hogan mark absolutely everything and just dominate. Chris Judd said on the following Monday he was the best player in the competition at the present moment.

What has happened in 2 games of football?

Maybe he's drunk on bathwater?

i wish our coach was like the scott brothers or hardwick. they're coaches that state their displeasures with the umpiring. i'm gonne spew if i hear goodwin say 'i thought port were great tonight', 'its a game of small margins'. he should be up in arms about the umpiring. they should be named and shamed.

Oh and one more thing, the last thing I and probably most other people here need right now is one of you social justice warriors to come on here and spout stuff like “Gee, reading this thread you’d think we lost by 10 goals/be more positive etc” Just shelf it for now please.

SJW???! ?

Thankyou Hogan, Vince, Tyson and ANB - for SFA.

Lost by the selectors and the forward coach.

You can add Petracca to that list.

Wasn't even going for marks tonight. Have a look at Dermie breaking down his game at half time on Fox, he continually ran past the drop of the ball to get front and centre. He's a key forward FFS not a crumber/flanker. Not sure what went on in his head tonight, I would have out him in the middle to get him around the footy and left him there. It's as though he didn't want to get in TMacs way.

Agree with most of that. Mystery why he doesn’t seem to handle big pressure games.

All we want us for him to play his role.

Frustrating for us supporters, must be even worse for his team mates.

Thought the boys gave evrything last night....tough to lose SUCH a winnable game. The biggest question in my mind after QB and last night is where the frik has Jesse gone. Utterly without impact in the two biggest games this year. He Fumbled, dropped chest marks, ran past contests and didnt get back into them similar to JW and misses an easy snap in his only chance. He neither creates a target down forward atm nor is any good on the ground.....but he runs a lot. He's turning int a flat track bully. Super disapointed in the player he's becoming in big games.

I said it before and will say it again, the coach and president should be on the phone to Dill about the umpiring. Heads must roll. Goodwin should have responded honestly to that Journo

He should have said the umpiring was borderline criminal and there should be a royal commission. Call it out front and centre. Sick of this weasel words talk. Be direct

In the virgin lounge with pretty much all afl media. BT and Hamish sitting beside me... any questions I should ask?

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
