Jones deserves a year to see how he can play in a new role and a lightened work load - he carried the midfield in the first 6 weeks of the year.

Lewis is playing the only position on the ground we can almost attempt to hide him and he's missing simple handballs under perceived pressure afraid of contact and giving away undisciplined free kicks.

We gave him an extra year he wasn't going to get at the Hawks. Worked well for both parties. There's no need for 1 more.

This is a stupid thread.  Why does most of use always blame Jordan Lewis and Nathan Jones they didn't play well but they wern't the worst. Way too big of a overreaction.

Really, so you think he showed the discipline expected of a leader in the first Q when the game was there to be won???

It's not about blame it's about being realistic now.

Jordan doesn't have another year in him, he's got the most our of himself, he's got his 300 games and he's been an invaluable player to have around the club.

...but it's time to hang'em up.

Rubbish. Lewis was immense in our two wins. He had a bad day today but so did Gawn and Jones. And many others.

Yep, he was 'praha' but the end comes quickly.

...but those 2 teams were really just making up the numbers as unfortunately we got proven to be today.

His lack of discipline was hard to take today, it's time to move on.

As long as Lewis is willing to play the role that is best for the club, like Bernie, I say he goes on and if/when his time is up he happily finishes his contract at Casey and hopefully helps the coaches, then lock it in for 2019.

No use looking for scapegoats based on today’s debacle.  Going by the player ratings TMac had a shocker but that was because our system collapsed and guys like TMac were being thrown around to put out spot fires down back, up forward, on the wing and in the ruck.

Similar thinking with Jones. My thinking is Jones has been asked to play a linking role off the wing this year and specifically instructed not to get in the way of Oliver, Viney, Harmes and Brayshaw as they can get ball and handball to a target in traffic better than Jones. In the first half today we didn’t see Jones because we didn’t get a clearance. After half time he started accumulate as we as a team did. Still worth another year.

It's the stupid brain fades that get on my goat. The punch to the guts off the ball. The attempting to punching the ball into the crowd from an on the full, very lucky not to be given 50m. I'm flabbergasted a guy with over 300 games does stupid, faux tough stuff like this, particularly in big games.

I think he may get a handful of games next year, but will mostly be of use as an assistant, assuming he's not coaching 'Brain Fades 101'.

He was horrible. But so was the rest of the team.

He shouldn’t be a walk up start next year, but neither should Jones - who had a worse September than Jordan...

We got shown up between the ears today across the board. To lay it at the feet of the easy targets is a trap we should avoid.

Agree with this. He was shocking, but neither Lewis or Jones should be consistent best 22 next year. Because they aren't. Jones is worse IMO and the time for him to step down as captain is now warranted.

Not one for rash statements after a bad loss but I think the evidence in our poorer performances stacks up against the same personnel.  Usually Lewis and Jones, but also some of the other usual suspects including Neal-Bullen (who tries his guts out but lacks polish) and Tyson (who just isn't sharp enough with pace or skills).  The decision to play Smith forward for large parts of the game proved that Fritsch should have played as well.  We will need to fit a few different players in next season so the clock is ticking for a few of this year's regulars.

Just now, Vandenberger With The Lot said:

I had to laugh in the first when he fell over, somehow the ball landed in his lap as he got up, and Darcy commented how well read it was by him.

Darcy's a clueless moron. He wouldn't know [censored] from clay if it landed in his mouth.

can those who are criticizing him suggest who we replace him with?

One of the best late senior players we have picked up. Sure we gave him three years but it's not his fault that there's not someone bashing down the door to take his place.

And of course his first two finals were sublime.

Seriously? Needs to go Too old too slow makes numerous errors and quite frankly was shizen today in a big game! Time has passed!

Im sorry but after todays effort he is done for me; we have Hunt and Fritsch who can develop into that role.

Thanks for your finals experience Jordie

Baker Kielty Petty Wagner Maynard T Smith Stretch Johnston anyone else on the backline ?

Based on today’s game let’s not panic but let’s unload half the list as too old or too slow or lacking poise under pressure. That is assuming we have ready made and improved replacements.

Would keep for mine, but certainly not a lock 22. Lets have someone like Wagner force him out of the team.

Do agree with others that Viney should be sole captain next year.

I'd make Bernie captain next year !

Had another 21 players who were all well beaten ... very harsh & like most of them there worst game all year since the hawks game early on .. reality is they beat 4 top 8 sides in a row inc 2x finals & lost to the 2nd team on the ladder who are on fire

Lewis had a mare today, about as bad a first half as he could’ve played. He wasn’t alone.

On the other hand Lewis was HUGE in the West Coast rnd 22 game, and the first and second final. Where does that leave him?

I think he gets another year but gets told his place is far from certain, he will have to deserve it like everyone else. Leadership group shouldn’t be a certainty either.

Funny how this thread doesn't pop up in the previous two weeks, or the two games prior to finals, when he was terrific.

Then the usuals come out to pot him in a game where 20 players stunk it up. Funny that.

He was supposedly brought in for his finals experience

" Funny that " no one on here is laughing now !

And that is counted against him for today, yet not counted for the previous two wins?

No player is perfect, and we had plenty off the boil today.

He'll be fine next year. We gave him a three year deal and that's what we got.

But in 2020, with Baker and Hunt still waiting their turn, we really should be future planning.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
