So what would Pick 25 & say Tyson, net us in a pick ?

What would Garlett and Pick 43 net us, in a pick?

Tyson & pick 25 would probably land us a pick between 15 & 20 if we were to add Hunt and that may tempt Port to let go Wines.

Garlett and pick 43 wouldn't land us much of a pick maybe pick 40 but pick 43 and Garlett should land us Langdon you wouldn't want to pay much more for Langdon.

    Langdon is being chased by several clubs and it would cost more than that if a deal could be done.

    No it shouldn't he would not be able to get into our senior team. If it costs more let him go.

    According to Kane Cornes, Port have had an offer on the table to Wines for some time. The offer would make him the highest paid at the club. I wonder what the  hold up is? Perhaps chasing success over mediocrity.

    there is no need for wines to hurry. besides may want a longer or shorter contract

    90% sure to re-sign though. mfc got nothing tradewise to offer

    best to hope he only extends till his rfa year (not long), then we can swoop

    I don't know Langdon.  I remember his name from U-18's, but I know nothink.

     

    But your see what i'm getting at, where there is a will, then there is a way.

    Actually I would prefer we went after DShiel, than Wines. Shiel is definately better in ball use.

    But I think we do need that extra quality inside player. 

    Maybe Maynard will come good, but he is also a mature age... VDB I don't know.

    It's time for some cleansing of the list, preferably Via trade than delisting.

    But we have to be in it, if we want the chance to win Anything.

    Wines in our midfield would just be a ridiculous amount of inside grunt. I don't know how we'd manage it, but I think we could find a way to fit him in.

    How do we get Wines or other players who are not free agents and have to be traded for? The answer is we can’t, unless we trade our quality. So unless we are willing to trade Hogan, Oliver or Petracca, then this trade, or trades for other good players such as Langdon, cannot happen.

    Who says we can't trade out first rounder next year? AFLs policy on this is anything but clear. They approved the Cats trading out there's when no-one thought they'd be able to.

    yes, the 'can't trade your first rounder in consecutive years is very rubbery

    as we picked oliver and weideman three years back and haven't had a first rounder since then, it would seem that we can't trade it

    but geelong seemed to have no dramas doing the equivalent last year

    as per usual, the afl makes it up as it goes along

    It seems if the will is strong enough,  the AFL will bend ?

    Poor old conservative Melbourne has never bent anything since back in the mid 60's,,,  when the whole world was bending things, from rules, to spoons.

     

     

    Since that time the only thing Melbourne has bent, is our minds.

    I think with Wines we'd run the risk of being like Port currently... Boak, Wines, Ebert, Rockliff... Plenty of grunt but little class or x-factor in the middle.

    They may have won last night, but they're an average side.

    He said the exact same thing in late April also and when interviewed by Garry on SEN this week got a little uncomfortable and couldn't give a straight answer. He's definitely considering bigger offers IMO

    rotations mach5, rotations. You don't play all the same type in the one setup you rotate them.

    Gaff is definitely a skill set that would compliment Viney/Oliver/Jones/Harmes/Brayshaw et al.

    Also Petracca over the next few years will progressively spend more time in the midfield and he is something no team has enough of; power mid with good hands and explosive speed culminating in very good skills out of a contest.

    So keep some room for that to happen...

    I'd say Carlton or maybe even Essendon are into him.

    Essendon need to learn how run hard defensively as a unit.

    St Kilda don't need his grunt - they need class.

    Dogs wouldn't be an attractive destination at the moment, all going pear-shaped.

    Hawthorn would be just the type of team to come out of nowhere with a big offer.

    WYL, let's have a tiresome back and forth over the definition of 'needs' in inverted commas...

    Or you can accept that Viney and Oliver and Jones have more in common with Wines than they do with Gaff or other outside players?

    North want a big fish to choose them and they are looking better now than they were even 4-5 weeks ago

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
