Well you were at odds with nearly every club at that time.

BTW, until being screwed by the club, by being made captain at 21 of a shambles of a side and then copping a few foot injuries, JT was a good player for us who looked headed to playing 200 games with us.

he had a ripping sanfl finals series that rocketed him up the rankings, however even pre injury he looked quite slow imo and poor foot skills

In hindsight and only that, it is a pity we didn't take the 2 top 10 picks offered by Port for pick 2. We may now have had 1 or 2 extra good players with us as a result.

we probably would've stuffed those picks up too

Martins playing credentials were better than HWSNBN. Unfortunately Martins life was a little 'Dusty' some say and many clubs , Mfc included , gave him a wide berth.

What does HWSNBN stand for?

Trengove was the clear number 2 that year.  Anyone who says otherwise wasn't being particularly vocal about it at the time.

FWIW, those two port pick went on Butcher and Moore... I think we definitely would have spent one of them on Butcher.

Throw Jones and Tyson and that's batting pretty deep.

This is not the Fab Five, If i might humbly propose we call our midfield the 'Hunters & Collectors' (eight contested ball winners, get it?), on our way to the Holy Grail, (Although somedays I think I am going to be as old as the 'Grail Knight' in the Indiana Jones film by the time we salute..)

Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Hogan, Salem, Petracca, Jones and Tyson

I think what is more upsetting is that we picked 4 players ahead of nat fyfe , I know that fyfe was not super highly rated at the time however those 4 players we picked have all left the club now

if we picked 4 players ahead of Fyfe then a lot of other clubs must have passed on him too.

There will always be regrets, and at times there will be more regrets than 'average'. But we seem to be through that now and may be entering the time of 'above average' non regretted decisions.  Time to forget the past.

Screw worrying about percentage, lets just get 14 wins!

we can only afford 5 more losses.

Aim high ..... why just aim at scraping in?

Win 15, 16 + and aim for top 4, then top 2, then top.

In horse racing terms, Scully was a half a length ahead of Trengove and Dusty was a length away in third at the post. I don’t recall much talk about us considering Martin. It was always Scully/Trengove.  At that time we would have burned the career of any player picked so high anyway.

You can always find better players overlooked with the benefit of hindsight.

Agreed but the hawks game rattled  my confidence.

The thing that worries me is our lack of depth. Barring injuries we could win 14 but 12....13 is realistic. (I think)

Melbourne Football Club Suporter Syndrome. A syndrome suffered by long term supporters of this club who have been afflicted with constant disappointment, let down and plain bad luck.

A recent example would be the statistically small chance of missing finals at then end of Rnd 22 last year and then actually missing finals by a statistically tiny amount. 186, nine coaches in a decade, a club near extinction, Jimmy Toumpas and HWSNBN. We won’t talk about Jack Watts.

Thanks or that. Well that has to be me as I have been a member for 59 years this year. Seen the highs and lows. Never wavered from my support of this club.

It's amazing now looking back at that. What a shambles of a club we were by making 2 x 21 yo boys captains.

And whats worse is there weren't better candidates.

Not knocking the boys but wowee we were in a bad spot.
