Changes vs Hawthorn R4

Featured Replies

ANB is simply not getting enough of it round the contest for mine. Melksham also isn’t having any impact on the scoreboard so has to be under pressure to hold his spot and dare I say Jetta is really struggling to have the impact that he has had in the past few years

A number of times yesterday we really lacked pace for mine so Hunt has to come back as soon as he finds form in the VFL, we saw him go fwd a few times last year so I’d try swapping him out for Melksham if he puts his hand up.

Brawyshaw is the obvious in for ANB if he continues to put his hand up at VFL level.

Something still feels off to me this year, we aren’t playing anywhere near our best footy, a lot of players are down on last year’s form but this is hidden somewhat due to the massive improvements of Hogan, Gawn and Petracca

What worked against North yesterday isn’t necessarily going to work against Hawthorn next week. I’d feel more comfortable with an extra tall to play forward and give Max some relief in the ruck. Cam Pedersen and Sam Weideman will be looked at closely at Coburg today.

Earlier in yesterday’s game we were a bit iffy against outside pace but we settled down and once tiredness crept into the game, we were fine. Still, a few players will be interesting - Hunt and Brayshaw in particular.

With the idea of outside pace in mind, I gave some thought last week to the possible surprise inclusions of one of Oskar Baker or Charlie Spargo but they’re probably not ready by half a season at least and those fairytale debuts don’t happen any more.

#31 ??

The following won't happen, but it's what I'd like (assuming Weideman plays well today).

IN: Weideman, Hunt, Hannan

OUT: Neal-Bullen, Melksham, Bugg

Jetta  McDonald  Lever

Hunt  Frost  Hibberd

Lewis  Jones  Salem

Petracca  Hogan  Hannan

Garlett  Weideman  Fritsch

Gawn  Oliver  Tyson

Vince Kent Harmes Wagner

I'd love Brayshaw to be ready, but it appears he's going to be at Casey for a while.

I know Bugg won't be dropped, but I can't stand him.  Do not rate at all.

Proverbial curates egg perhaps best describes yesterday's game.

Good in patches.

Then again Fritsch's mark is allowed and the two comedy capers like misses in the second quarter are goals and we have a 55 point win. Deduct two Brown goals for dubious frees and it is almost an 80 point thrashing.

Let's be honest North are not a good team and we should have won easier yesterday.

I posted on the match day thread that I thought we looked slow. Matthew Lloyd on 3AW made the same comment after the game. Other than Hunt who is sadly out of form who do we have that can provide the necessary explosive dash. As WJ mentions above perhaps it is one of this year's draft picks because I can't think of anyone else at Casey who fits the bill.

Same problem with the tall but at least we have two candidates in Weideman and Pedersen. Today's Casey game will be interesting. (1pm at Coburg for those who want to come along...lovely ground).

My take is no changes but then again like most others I have been badly amiss at guessing Goodwin's selection strategy  this season.

And when was the last time a guy kicked 4 goals and got dropped the following week? Ease up on Bugg.

Weed needs a least 2 games to prove himself before being considered.

I assume Goody will make at least one change just to keep the edge on the team and to provide a pathway for playing a cracker at Casey and that being the case from my game watching it would be either of ANB or Harmes to go (Melksham and Jetta get one more chance).

To come in would be a tall forward in the Weed if he does well today otherwise one of the Smiths... but not Pedo who will see out his contract at Cranbourne (the possible smoky could be King?)

Why? The bloke wasn't even an emergency this weekend.

And who would you drop? Very hard to make changes to a side that wins by 6 goals.

They made 2 changes last week after a 4 goal win.

That, my friend, isn't going to happen.

Past history shows you might be right but I think that all on this forum are barracking for Pedersen to challenge for a recall.

I really don't know why I read the "changes" thread each week.

I mean, people calling for the inclusions of the likes of Spargo, Smith x 2, Baker.  Then someone calling for a bloke that kicked 4 goals to be dropped, just because he doesn't like him.

Please.

Melksham right on the fringe but NO changes needed for this week.

The game plan against the Hawks requires a tweak to curb their diagonal overlap run off the back of the contest with numbers, always towards the inside corridor or across it if needed.

Keep the exisiting winning formula and keep the focus of the whole crew on this next big shut down task, especially the HBs & Mids

Jaydn Hunt was dropped because of form, so needs to earn his spot back.

Only change : Brayshaw for Melksham (account poor decision making and skill execution)

I concur that ANB and Melksham look to be the ones on shakiest ground. Hope Brayshaw and Hunt tear it up today.

With Puopolo, Rioli, Breust and Impey, we need pace in the back half next week. Hopefully Hunt has a good game today for Casey.

I don't like him because of his football.  He's VFA quality.

I want him to play well today, but I'll be happy if he doesn't play again for the MFC, because it will mean Weideman grabbed his chance and has developed to a level that demanded his inclusion.  Or McDonald has recovered from his injury.

I think Pedersen is arguably one the most overrated player by his own supporters.

Our present game plan seems to substantially channel the Richmond game plan.

If so today's game between Hawks and Tigers will be a fascinating lesson in whether the scramble of Richmond  can overcome the precision of the Hawks.

A real pity that this is not the FTA broadcast game

We rely on our contested ball/inside ball winning and pressure to keep the game in our favour. There are a lot of calls for Pederson or Weideman but I'd rather keep the small line up. I think part of the reason Pederson is out is due to his lack of speed which can leave us even more exposed in transition or when trying to lock the ball inside 50. He's been average in the Ruck and around the ground also. If Tom McDonald was available I'd probably change the opinion of bringing in another tall as I think he brings more to the team, but Weideman and Pederson don't bring enough for mine at the moment.

Like you said our game is channelling the Tigers almost and there's nothing wrong with that. It's playing to our strength and as the Tigers showed in the GF it can nullify a more skilful and or quicker team when you get the game on your own terms. The problem is when a team like the Hawks who are very skilful and relatively quick can manage to match that intensity around the contest. Our inside mids will be really important next week.

So true.

People on these threads always complaining about the same players bugg wagner harmes. People need to start watching the game before they comment.

So tried of every complaining about Brayshaw no playing. He's a fringe player and clearly not in our best 22. Just because he was a former pick 3, doesn't mean he's in our best team.

Agree with all this. And it's only a matter of time before Bugg's untidiness costs us a game.

I don't want him anywhere near the 22 come the back end of the season or finals.

Weed is the option if he shows some form or we stay small until Tommy Mac is ready.

As I mentioned earlier, l think Pedders is done.

To expand on that, he's not good enough to play as a forward and his role is as a running ruck. The only time I can see him being considered for selection is as a replacement for Max.

Of course this is just my opinion but my reading of the tea leaves is that the FD experimented with Pedders as a key forward in the first 2 games & it didn't work.

So for now it's either Weed or carry on with small forwards until Tommy is ready.

I think & hope long term it's Weed...maybe just not yet.

I feel the same with Frost, as a player of course.

Good VFL level athlete.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
