I find it amusing that we’re only two games in and people (posters here included) thought Lever was going to slot into a new team and have the same impact straight away he had at Adelaide.

Adjusting to all the differences that come with playing with a new team is going to take time.

The kid will be a gun for us. You’ll always have people who want players in Levers position to fail. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby I’m gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.

Missed a shake.

I think it will take him close to a season to get used to playing with us.

Common request but we shall donate patience, once again.

I'm all outta patience.

I have plenty of angst, though.

really? I've been following this team for over 20 years and i'm still finding it hard to understand how they play.

Took pig about 5 mins to have effect and impact.. ( with a holiday from game no less )

I call bullshlt on patience. Lever ought to be better than this. Hes no green draftee/ rookie , he's a finals experienced player ffs.

Too early to make a call IMO.

I presume most people thought we bought him to the club as the third tall/intercept defender as he played with Adelaide. However he is playing as our 2nd tall and required to play a more accountable game (in terms of minding bigger forwards) it will take a little longer to learn the ropes.

I don't know if it will change this week, I don't see us bringing in Frost. Nth left Ben Brown with a lot of room in the Forward half last week,  and Waite didnt push up forward all that much, he was delivering the ball (quite nicely too I might add) to Brown. Lever can still possibly play that intercept role with other smaller defenders to take on their mid and small forwards.

Only if he continues to be played out of position.

If he goes back to his proper role this week he will immediately get used to playing for us.

Bring in Frost and let Lever do what he does best.  Intercept mark without having to body the big KPF's

Spot on! Lets not forget we gave up 2 first round picks for Lever, thats a lot of talent not coming through the door. I was sceptical when the deal was done and nothing has transpired to date that would change my view.

Am all for allowing Lever his 'more' natural game. Still, i can't imagine the current role is any surprise to him.

I'm a little underwhelmed.

Hang in there, BB...I'm sure he'll come good

He'll need to

Thought he was average against Geelong, but decent against Brisbane. I think he'll be a good player.

Hibberd is playing the role that Lever should be. But currently Hibberd is keeping him out of that role.

mmmmmmm so remind me why we gave up two first round draft picks and are paying big money if we already had an All Australian playing the same role.

Because it'll be better to have two AAs on your list, rather than one?

I disagree. I thought the idea was to double down on the type of player Pig is. Have twice that potency of interception/ rebound. That and insurance should either be injured.

Im not sure why the FD are dlcking around and having Lever not play the style ( you know...the one we all thought he was to play...the why of why he came...or so we assumed )but it's not quite working. We can see this ... surely the powers that be can as well ?

Whichever...Lever isn't impacting at the level he ought.

How about he is judged when he actually plays the role he was brought into the club for.

Bring in Frosty and let Lever be the switch. I swear if Ben Brown is allowed to clunk freely this week, I will implode.

I'm not really concerned about Lever himself, but I am curious about how the club are playing him now and planning on playing him in the future.

He was recruited on the back of an excellent year of intercept marking where he was given opponents he could run off to help out his fellow defenders. What is he for us?

Is he an intercept marker, or is he a true defender expected to beat larger players one on one?

That's exactly how I've seen him, but it doesn't appear to be the way we're playing him. So they need to sort out the structure to allow him to do what he does best.

Hibberd was far more experienced than Jake. And his position didn't change at Melbourne. Lever is now learning to play second tall, not third tall/intercepter. Just as Rance had to learn when he was 25-26 (note the age difference). Poor comparison, Bubs.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
