Weide will be a great player for us.

He just needs time to grow into his frame, as most big men do.

Be patient, he will excite.

Not every player comes on like a Judd or Daniel Talia, not even Hodge or Mitchell did.   But I would have either of those 2, over Judd.

The fact they've been IN demand at the end of their careers, says a lot really.  about Culture/Leadership.

Oh come on, we should delist him and let someone like Brisbane pick him up as a dud.

Agreed, I am not worried about him at all.  Hes probably still a season away, but wouldn't surprise me if he forced his way into the team in the 2nd half of this season.

His game for Casey vs Box Hill last season was an epic performance.

I just looked thru our list for a whipping boy.  We don't have ANY anymore.  No list cloggers.  All footballers. No athletes really so much, anymore.

thankfully, we have finally arrived to this point, where all we have down the bottom, are players who are trying to adjust their bodies to withstand the rigors of AFL footy.

So these down there, are talented but with issues to overcome, if they can.   These are players we rolled the dice on.

.

So with this, lets cut back on the whipping of the underdogs, and save it up, IF any of the others don't show the courage, or the commitment we should expect, from Demon players.

Hopefully we won't need to bring out the boots to kick anyone.  We are all past most of that pain, of the last 13 years.

Now is the time to put that energy into booing the Opposition, the Umps when required, & into screaming out for the D's to go hard.

Ask yourself what would it take for you to put your fears aside that he won't make it? Does he need to come in for the second half of the season and kick 30 goals? Or would 2-3 good games, perhaps kicking 4-5 goals in one or two of them be enough?

Townsend played 2 good games at the end of last year before finals... fast forward to the start of 2018 and he's a starting small forward and looks as dangerous as any of the Tigers forwards.

If Weed does something like this... comes in for 4-6 games when needed, and performs in just a few, the hounds will be kept at bay.

Obvious? What?

Pedersen is in his twilight years. Of course the coaching staff are going to train and  trial Weideman as a second ruck.

I can tell you now he won’t be a dominant and permanent forward.

Can he be an improvement on King and Flipper with some decent forward craft as well as being tall enough to give a ruck chop-out? Absolutely.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s moved on at the end of this year.

Is there a dominant and permanent forward in the game at the moment? Hawkins is probably the closest to a permanent forward but most push up high in defence, or rotate position, and then push back in attack.

I'll be very surprised if he does get moved on at the end of the year, I think the kid has shown us enough glimpses of what he can do. I'm looking at the 2020 season to be his breakout year. ?

I don't think the hounds need to be baying at all.

As I said, we don't really have any hangers-on's, any longer, any non-committed to the cause.

All we have left now, is young fellas, who want to be their best.

We have so many young players in our best 22, we need another 28Yr old soon, to replace the 31 Yrs+  players nearing the end.

We need the leadership and maturity because our 25's plus, are not all that great. the good older players are spread too thin.

So we're in no real hurry for more youngsters in the 22, unless they crash the bloody wall right down.

Amazing that a top 10 pick with 3 years on the list isn’t pushing for selection despite injuries and first year players like Fritch can stroll right into seniors.

Only been on the list for 2 years olisik. He was drafted with Clarry.

Throw in that he was MIA in his draft year due to injury and it doesn't surprise me that he is behind Curnow in terms of development at the moment. Curnow has a much more athletic build, Weids still needs to drop some more puppy fat and build up his muscle/strength along with his tank.

They can't all be Hogan/Hawkins types where they come in and dominate from day dot. As pointed out earlier, Curnow's best return up until tonight was 2 goals. Weids achieved this in his very first outing. He is tracking fine.

As the Viney experiment has shown, it's much better to bring him in when he and his body are ready for the rigours of AFL.

Such a poor point and simplistic analysis that focuses on just one stat in the least attacking team seen since Melbourne under Neeld. Curnow is light years ahead in every statistical evaluation from last season.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the description about their builds. We drafted yesterdays footballer while Carlton picked up the future of football.

I wish Weideman well, but unless he magically improves his agility there will be no role for him with Hogan and McDonald up forward.

Not worried about him, he will be ok for us. To me his area of improvement needs to be in reading the play.

The Weed: Reading the play is his key football need. Putting on some real muscle is another - much more than one pre-season of 'bulking', as reported. He could also increase his speed considerably and lateral agility is vital for him to become the key forward that he already should be. Consistent competitiveness in marking might result. Leading to deliveries would be highly desirable, as well.

Painfully true. He has a particular body shape and size. If he really wants to play premium football, he needs to work harder than he has on that body and its capabilities. He could well handle 15 kgs of sheer muscle development from head to toe; his ability to read the play is in need of attention; he has very little agility in lateral and directional change; his light frame renders him noncompetitive in critical fwd marking duels or packs; he could work on speed increases and leading to space as a fwd receiver of midline effort. Injuries, sure were important but I doubt that he has been 'really' working on his aptitudes for success. I'd give him this year only to make the change - then hand him back to the Filth if key milestones are not met.

He's has an operation on his ankle, so has not long started back into Pre-Season work?

He will be at Casey for a while, but by mid-season, It's then time to start with some expectations of this young man.  Not before mid season as he works his new body onto some sort of form.

He is just at the start of filling out his frame, so give him some time.

Latter half of the year, we should be expecting him to take some control at VFL level.

Also, I'm hopeful of Keilty to start some good form by mid season the new breed of young fellas.

The thing I would really like to see/hear, is young King. I'd like to hear of him taking some strides along in the VFL, this year.

King has talent. Gone missing? What is happening with him - at Casey?

Fritch is 21, he would not have made the team as 18,19, played lots of Senior footy, can't compare, I would not have pick him because of his injury issue, we did not pick curnow because he was picked up for drink driving on the eve of the draft.

He needs to show this at VFL level let alone AFL level.

The fact is he had one decent game for Casey last year ...

Even the great Juice Newton killed it at VFL level.

Unfortunately yes Dr G ... and we all want him to succeed.

Finally I will make the point again that the shortened VFL season means Weid misses 3 games in which he might show development.

Yes, DJ - it is all just another worry and as I have said it before, another tall kept in abeyance.....for how long?

If Weed nominated for the draft today would he get picked in the top 20? I doubt it

You've been banging on about Weideman since last night but can't even get simple facts right. He's been on our list for 2 years

That post was from last night so yes I have. 3 pre seasons, this is his third year.

So with TMac out until rounds 6-8 (at best given no match fitness) it means there is an opportunity for someone to step up into the forward line.

Weiderman showed a lot of promise at the end of 2016 but 2017 proved to be difficult for him and was arguably played when he shouldn’t have.

I’ve heard a lot about plenty of other players but I’ve heard next to nothing about Weids. He was a high draft pick and showed some promise in his debut, I hope the coaches are telling him to work his ass off to aim to force himself into the side.

He missed a large chunk of the pre-season and is developing. He has so much upside but is taking time.

He missed a lot of footy before being drafted and therefore started from a long way back.

I expect him to be a regular come the 2nd half of the season

Weeds - born June 97 - 196cm
Fritsch - born Dec 96 - 186cm

Not really a fair comparison.

Curnow had never kicked more than 2 goals in a game before tonight. So no different to Weeds.

This is a year for Sam to develop a healthy, strong AFL body. Apparently with ankle surgery and a long preseason in rehab and not rushed in to AFL games that has hopefully been achieved. At VFL he has to find consistency with getting to and winning contests. If he's body is right he'll be able to rotate in as back up ruck and that will do him wonders.

His body not he’s.

The pressure on Weid perhaps comes about because he was a number 9 pick. At that level the player is expected to contribute to the senior team within a year. This includes talls. Look at Moore and Daniher. Similarly look at the pressure on McCartin.

If he had been a pick 40 development player the debate today would have a different tone. Football  has changed and the need to get a player from a team's first round pick is essential.

I haven't written him off but this is the year where we need to see repeated signs. As an aside longer term you have to wonder if he has a role to play in the modern game even if he develops in the classic FF mode. That role seems to be going the same way as the ruckman

This is the most interesting post on this thread. It's the first time I've seen any reference to Weideman doing some ruck training. (Perhaps he's been doing this training for some time and maybe it has previously been reported, but it is certainly the first time I have become aware of it.) Unless he can pinch hit in the ruck, he's never going to fill in for Tom McDonald. Broadening his skill set gives him the best chance to get picked. His second best chance is if Hogan is unavailable.

You can count it as 2. I am counting it as 3. 2016/17/18

Interesting approach. I'm not sure how old you are now, but if you've already reached adulthood, did you argue that once you'd turned 17 you should be allowed into pubs because you were into your 18th year? If so, how did that work out for you?

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
