We used to have a bit of fun with these a few years ago on the old Demonology.

The answer to each cryptic clue is a Demons player from this century.

Please limit yourself to TWO answers so as to give others a chance.

The judge (ie. me) has the final say.  Have at it cryptic fans....

1.  He was on a standard with Roger.

Darren Jolly

2.  More suited to another sport.

Rohan Bail

3.  Classic and/or type of player.

David Rodan

4.  Second rate Collingwood hack.

Angus Brayshaw

5.  Smack a head coach or another one?

Luke Tapscott

6.  Given stern directions to finish up.

Jack Grimes

7.  Our favourite umpire?

Ricky Petterd

8.  Weights program proved helpful.

Steven Armstrong

9.  Matches?  Danger!

Jack Fitzpatrick

10.  Could have been another Rivers?

Shannon Byrnes

11.  Sounds like he was cool ... deep down.

James Sellar

12.  It was surprising to hear he was good.

Michael Evans

Not the correct answer I know, but on reading Q4 I immediately thought of Heritier Lumumba.

Q2.   Rohan Bail (cricket).  Could just as easily be Brad Green (lawn bowls)

What, no vacuum cleaner joke? No 'only popular at Christmas'? I guess you can't do everyone in one sitting.

I'm a bit confused though - are the clues just to the name only, or about the player's characteristics? Anyway here's one answer of each type.

7 - David Rodan

8 - Steven Armstrong

Only a few of these are actually cryptic. Most are what are called "posers". But a great idea. Might give me something to do over the summer months to add to the entertainment.

At a stretch, Q3 could be James Strauss.

Thanks for filling in the answers GOTO.   Four down, eight to go.

I won't be able to get back to this until tomorrow morning, but for the sake of getting through it, disregard the two question limit if you'd like to have a go at some others.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
