Port Adelaide has just announced that Robbie Gray has testicular cancer. I suspect all Melbourne supporters understand how PA supporters feel right now. Good luck to the young man. As Hogan has shown, it's a battle which can be won.

They reported on Trade Radio that not only has he had surgery to remove the cancer but he will undergo precautionary chemo.

Geez. How quickly life can change. Best wishes Robbie. I don't recall Hogan requiring chemo. So I assume that means that it is a worse diagnosis.

looks that way though they did say 'precautionary' chemo. and they did say he should be ready for pre-season training

iirc they did say with jesse how lucky he was that they caught it so early

Sad to hear but sounds like he is making great progress just like our Jesse. Im sure Jesse will want pass on his best on behalf of himself and the club.

After following football for over 50 years, Sam Rowe, Jesse Hogan and Robbie Gray are the only players I can recall who have disclosed having testicular cancer during their playing careers. I may be wrong, of course, and I'm sure others will correct me if that is the case. If I am correct, I find it hard to believe that they are the only players in this time to be so afflicted. Hopefully it's a sign that we're being more "adult" about our understanding of illnesses and have made it easier for players to disclose a disease that players in earlier times were more "embarrassed" to admit.

Conversely, if these are in fact the only three players in the last 50 years to have testicular cancer, it may be necessary to start thinking about whether something about AFL is causing this to occur.

The only other name that springs to mind is Peter Crimmins in the 70s.

It is indeed, though far more progress has been made in diagnosis and treatment than in Peter Crimmins' days
