Injured Draftees

This year - as with most - there are quite a few potential draftees who spent all or part of the season on the injured list.

This always affects their draft position as we've seen with the likes of Joel Selwood who was picked sixth in his draft year when recovering from an ACL. Likewise, Jake Lever was once considered a top three prospect but he spent his draft year also recovering from knee surgery as did Max Gawn.

There are a few likely types on the injured lists right now. Names like Darcy Fogarty, Charlie Spargo, Cal Coleman-Jones and Adam Cerra on the draft injured list and there's a level of intrigue about where they will end up. 

As Geelong's gutsy selection of Joel Selwood showed, sometimes taking an educated risk pays off.

I revisited this post today in light of the draft picks now held by the club. The panelists indicated that Coleman-Jones and Spargo were likely second rounders and both would be handy at Melbourne.

Forgot about Spargo. From memory he was rated top 5 last year and was a GWS academy player before the area got stripped from the giants.

Would be interested to hear more about him if any of our resident draft enthusiasts have further info...?

Drafting injured players can be dangerous from a player development point of view. Both physically and mentally, they've missed an important time and the clubs have less to go on before drafting them. Some overcome, like Selwood. Some don't. 

Interestingly, a player who we drafted with less exposed form and development, Weideman, is struggling with the AFL workload. Word is bone spurs in his foot/ankle area have forced him to drop weight and reduce his running loads. I believe this has impacted on his movement this season.

The problem was we took the Toump not as a bargain because he had the hip injuries, we paid top price for an injured player. Who then struggled to show why he was a pick 3. No weapons that I could detect, small in stature, no speed, not particularly evasive, not a great kick. Maybe he had that before his injuries that led us take him early. Certainly many rated him as top10.

so why was prodee the chief cheerleader at the time for the toump the so-described classy outside mid we needed? i still have nightmares over wines.
