Is how boring and predictable the game is becoming.  Its becoming like a bad game of rugby union.  Its mostly congested and horrible.  The second half of the game against Port was boooring in the extreme.

I used to watch 3 or 4 games on the weekend now I can't be bothered unless the Dees are on TV.  I predict crowds will drop and less people will attend games.  Then sponsors will offer less $$ and when this happens the AFL will look at the rules to minimise congestion.

My teenage boys who were brought up on AFl now prefer to watch the Rugby League.

All it will take is a coach to work out how to beat it and it will change. Problem is that since Pagans paddock every change has been further and further towards 36 players following the ball around the ground. 

Any second half when the Demons are winning all day is awesome from where i sit. Bring on 30 years of Domination, we have all seen quite enough of the alternative. 

Not sure if this is the elephant in the room.

 

There has been more close games this season than any other season I can remember. Record attendances, so many swings in games, upsets galore and a very even season.

boring, predictable, certainly don't come to mind.

The second half of the Melb v Port game was contest after contest, no side willing to give an inch. In the balance it was enthralling arm wrestle and the Dees did well to hold tight and score late to secure a great win.

Its easy. Stop the Interchange rotations. 

All of these modern problems have begun from the interchange rotation numbers...

Completely disagree, maybe a couple of years ago it was a worry but the players are getting better at playing through the congestion. You see guys like Clayton who come in and absolutely thrive off it. it's incredibly exciting when a team breaks through lines and has clear space in front of them, and players like Hunt and Frost have added value because they can tear through these lines. The games this year have been incredible, I really don't understand how you can say they're boring.

I enjoyed the second half especially the last quarter where we basically kept them in their back half after their two early goals. Our zone worked perfectly with Lewis setting up as the general at half back.

Two contrasting halves but brilliant to watch in my eyes, these styles can take you a long way to success. 

Congestion is the biggest issue with the sport and because of the open nature of the game it is impossible to police (without creating zones).

However, AFL crowds are on the increase whereas NRL crowds are on the way down and Super Rugby is on its knees so your assessment is incorrect.

It's still the best sport in the world, albeit too crowded at times.

That 15 minutes in the last qtr on Saturday when neither team scored was as tough, brutal and physically demanding football that you will see.

Record attendances and viewership tells another story. I enjoyed the hard fought slog of the 2nd half just as much as the openness of the 1st

Just put everyone in Fremantle jumpers for an elephant in the room.

non MFC games are becoming like basketball to me. I love the NBA but like non MFC games I only closely watch when it's towards the end of a game and it is close.  

The game is fine - the elephants are named 'umpiring' and 'match review panel'.

These two things are in dire need of sorting out.

Do that and I'll enjoy my footy much better.

Speaking of that did any one else hear last night on SEN when Dermit Breaton said the Dee's are the best placed side in the eight to win the GF OX almost feel off his chair he was that happy. Hope he is right?

I would say this has been one of the most even and unpredictable seasons that I can remember- and my deplorable tipping results can testify to that!

So many close finishes and come from behind victories (even some pearlers involving the dees) - I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the footy this year.  This year there doesn't seem to be any safe margin at any stage of the match.

Not sure why, But Dermott has always had a soft spot for the Demons.

I've always seen this as a controversial phrase.

When I used it  once backstage at an Adele concert I got kicked out.

BTW- if Dermatitis  says we are GF or flag worthy then we are worthy.

He may not be as intelligent as he would think ,but footy and fornication are two things he knows deeply,sideways and backwards.

I understand why the OP is saying what he/she said but but you can thank Goodwin for the second half being boring, and at the same time you can thank him for helping us to win the game because of it. 

He recognised Port were getting their free flowing game going to he stopped it from happening. When Port got a run on early in the 4th he was able to communicate to the players to shut it down, and so there was no goal for about 10min but it essentially killed the game. 

Lotsof games I've watched from Melbourne have been relatively high scoring, so if Goodwin has to alter it to win the game, that's what he's paid to do. 

As for your prediction of less crowds, memberships, TV viewers; the numbers are going up and I'd imagine will continue to go up. This has been one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons ever.

I suppose it is all relative, like what you are pointing to. One of my loves being soccer, a boring Quarter of AFL has infinitely more excitement than an interesting half of soccer. It always takes me back at how slow the pace of a soccer game is when I have spent a weekend watching AFL, which is non stop contests. Don't get me wrong, I love Soccer and get a great amount of enjoyment out of it, but AFL is an andrenaline rush in comparison. Just my two cents.

I feel the same way about what he has to say but i can tell you after he said we can this years flag my ears pricke up.
