Sam Baulderstone is the Norwood ruckman who I wrote about a couple of years ago and who underwent a massive fitness regime to lose heaps of weight (a la Mumford) to become one of the standout ruckman in the SANFL.

Exactly the type of player we need to top off our midfield.

Whether he is that player or not, is another story.

There was nothing of him when Neeld was coach.

We took him at about pick 88 as a kid and he went to St Pats Ballarat .

He looks to have put on bulk and has kept his speed.

Can't recall if he quit or was de-listed.

He ask to leave the due to personal issues, found it hard to be away from his family and the way club was back then found it very hard to adapt. Not to sure if he would want to come back and live in Melbourne or not?

He quit.

Always looked a likely sort on the training track but didn't have a great ball finding ability to influence the contest.

Will be interesting to see if recruiters will give him another shot at senior level.

Rookie idea, sure. 

He actually signed a comtract extension with us weeks/months before he quit to head home.

 

And from memory we didn't draft him, he came as part of the Hogan package.

He was living in Ballarat for a few years prior to being drafted, so this ins't true. I posted in the Jake Lever thread where his name was brought up, that he actually enjoyed the Melbourne lifestyle too much and dedicated more time to external activities rather than footy.

If he has matured a bit and I think going home might have given him better perspective on life, then he could come back and make a real contribution. I also think he left on pretty good terms, might be worth a rookie spot.

Maybe he should give Todd Viney a call and see if we could give him a spot for next year?

Yes, he was definitely the steak knife in the deal that netted us Hogan, Toumpas and Viney (in the second round).

Don't think he will move to Melbourne. He's settled into life in Adelaide with family and also studying there. Considering he left us for family reasons, you'd think now that he's finally settled after years, he'd wanna stay put. Will be a rookie option for the Adelaide clubs only IMO

I kinda like when things come full circle so I'm leaning towards sure, why not rookie him.  21 disposals a game with "blistering speed on the wing" is almost exactly what the doctor ordered.

From memory he had elite speed and endurance which is a rare combination and suits our game plan. If he is competitive by nature he will be on Taylor's radar.

Baulderstone - absolutely yes. Big body and beautiful booming kick for a ruck. Put him in an AFL program and see how he goes.

Barry - I was going to raise his name the other day when someone argued the merits of sending JKH to Darwin, because, you know, he's indigenous and all that. I think Neeld thought the same and selected Dom for the trip. His blistering speed wasn't much use on the day finishing with maybe one kick and a handball (though, to be fair, I think he may have been the sub).

Definitely more suited to Goodwin's game plan than Neeld's.

We might have 1st dibs on him already.  Mahoney quote, 'This would, if approved, allow the opportunity for Dom to re-engage with the Melbourne Football Club should Dom rekindle his passion for AFL'

The description fits a need, but his speed is hardly blistering and his skills were very average for a player that was described as having silky skills when drafted.

Some players take longer to develop physically, and physical attributes can change and evolve over time.

I think the assumption that the Dom Barry we saw playing for the MFC three years ago is the exact same one playing today, especially based on these reports, is a flimsy one at best.

My memory might be fading but isn't that what Garry saw as the marsterplan in his incisive appraisal !

That's fair, but averaging 21 possessions is hardly groundbreaking in the SANFL.

Does look to move better and quicker than I remember in this video, however, I stand by my kicking comments.
