It seems overnight Pruess has become Shane Mumford the way people are talking about him.

For those saying May isn't big enough to deal with big forwards, he's the same size as Frawley and Rance.

yes...undersized for a modern key defender

the likes of harris andrews are the prototype - extrezzo tall but agile, just like the key forwards they need to match up on

it's part of why sydney are so keen to get darcy moore in, as he has the height and the nous to play that role

Harris Andrews plays his best games as an intercepting CHB whilst Darcy Gardiner at 194cm takes all the dangerous goal kickers. 

Ben Brown and Daniher are scary 200cm forwards but the Coleman is still dominated by guys like Riewoldt, Franklin, Kennedy and Tommy Mc.

Recent draftees like Schache and Boyd haven't looked mobile enough at 200cm.

Mason Cox played a great game, but his opponent came straight from the sick bay, his other finals were ineffectual, any decent defender who can get body on can negate mostly him. Whilst 190cm Jordan De Goey looked the real danger man for the Pies for most of the year.

We can develop Petty as a CHB at 197cm, we can use Oscar in that spot too and we can have Lever coming across and leaping for spoils. What we don't have on the list at the moment is a reliable full back who can win contests deep in the backline.

And I struggle to see how May improves that 

i understand that GC17’s midfield outs zero defensive pressure on the ball carrier, leaving him exposed, but he has regularly had bags of goals kicked on him throughout his career

Firstly, I would not trade for May. I would prefer to keep Frost and O Mac. We will have Lever back next season and we should be looking at another key backman that won’t cost the world...

If the Dees receive Picks 5 & 6 from Freo for Hogan. Gold Coast will receive say Pick 6  for May. This is definitely way overs in my book. If this was to happen I believe we have to get Pick 18 from GC also...

May & Pick 18 = Pick 6

Collingwood who are also interested in May have Pick 17.

I don't want May, especially if it means giving up a top 10 pick we get for losing Hogan. May will be 27 at the start of next season, and will cost a huge chunk of salary cap.

I think May will end up at Pies anyway. Some of the talk here of giving up a pick 5 or under 10 for him are out of touch. He's serviceable and definitely better than what we have, but we shouldn't move heaven and earth for him. I'm still of the opinion that we need a CHB and an experienced one. Lever to continue playing 3rd man up intercept role. We really need to improve our defence this summer.

We are very much in the premiership window right now , so need to recruit for immediate needs. May should have a good 5 years in him.

He was good this year and we would  not have made finals without him.  He has his dashing pace and attacks the contest but he still has shortcomings  - he dropped or misjudged many marks.

We do need a replacement KPB - I would go for Weed or Hogan because they offer much more class and I think we only can carry 2 KPFs in the 22.  But if Hogan is traded the May deal makes complete sense.

We have developing KPB depth coverage with Petty and Keilty.

Do you think Keilty has the pace or athleticism to make it at AFL level ?

Honestly, the talk of overs for someone who would help us immensely in the next 4+ years is embarrassing. 

We made a [censored] prelim. 

May is the body shape we miss in our back six. Someone who can out-body an opponent and allow for Lever to do what he does best. Neither on of Oscar or Frost are capable of using their bodies in the way that will allow for Lever to play his natural game. May is it. We need the guy. 

One of Oscar and Frost to play the second key tall, preferably Oscar for his composure with ball in hand and ability to keep things simple. 

Sydney had Grundy for years playing that role so well because he is a rock and is so good with his body. He's not tall and he's not that skilled. It allowed for Rampe to play his position perfectly. 

Adelaide the same with Talia and Hartigan which enabled Lever to have an unbelievable second year as an intercept specialist. We've got to provide an environment where our players can play to their strength and at the moment our backline is a bit of 'make it up as you go'.

I agree re Petty.  He has very good upside.

I don't care whether Frost stays or goes (as long as he's covered).

Sell at his peak. There'd be demand.

I was big on Weed or Hogan back to replace Frost.  But looks like Hogan is gone so that is off.

Therefore May in makes complete sense and trade Frost.

Fallback is the Frost OMac status quo.

The question should be around what will give us the best shot at a flag in the next 5 years? Not whether or not a first rounder is 'overs'. Why do posters keep missing this? 

Again. We were one win away from a grand final. We are not in a rebuilding phase so the obsession with draft picks needs to stop. 

May is seriously undersold on demonland, like many opposition players which shouldn't surprise me. 

He is exactly what we need and the fact that we had a meeting with the guy should give a fairly good indication as to our interest in him.

Firstly the suns are bluffing about being willing to hang onto may. It’s not going to happen. And the pies first pick would be about 17-18 so they would have to include a player of quality to get it up to the value of pick 5 or 6 

i personally don’t mind the idea of passing on pick 5 to the power for 9& 10 and allowing them to grab the Adelaide lad and offering pick 10 for may.  

This allows us to fill the key defensive void and either take 2 top 10 picks to the draft or bundle them up for a crack at some good players.

GCS want a long term contract.  May wants a long term contract, wherever he ends up:  "I want a long-term deal, so I just want to do the due diligence and speak to the necessary parties and then sit down with the club and make a decision."

May is also singing the praises of GCS youth and Dew.  It may all be blah, blah, blah by May but it does sound like he is leaning towards staying and the 'assessing all options' is a ploy to eke out the max from GCS.  After all, GCS  have buckets of Lynch money to spend and no-one to spend it on.  May is most unlikely to get a better deal ($ or terms) anywhere else. 

He isn't out the GCS door yet.  Watch this space.

I would like to see May stay at the GC. It would be good for the game and GC. If they give him a long term deal it is pretty obvious he will stay... 

He has pretty much gone public with that. The ball back is in your court GC!

If this was a tennis game, GC is pretty match serving for Match Point with a set in hand. Easy game to close out... 

if you stand for something GC just serve the Ace and be done with it...

The club asked the AFL if he’d become a RFA (given his 8 years of service) if his contract was scrapped and the AFL said no.

I was rather lukewarm about May until you put it like that. 

I wonder how true the comments are around his commitment and coming back to pre-seaspn training overweight, but I'd like to think down here at Melbourne he would eradicate that sort of behaviour. You get the feeling GC wouldn't have set standards all that high in the past. 

I can see the benefit of getting May for a first rounder, but I'd be also expecting Freo to give us two picks or the equivalent player as well so it's Hogan for May and a 1st rounder/Brayshaw/Cerra type deal.

Yes, he has skills, strong but can be bit of a hot head.

I would not be giving up a top 10 pick without May + something in return.
