Wild card weekend

Featured Replies

Seems that this might be a lock for next year.

7 plays 10 and 8 plays 9.

Would be gutted if Melbourne made the 8 only to be kicked out in the wildcard round.

Also can't see how a team would possibly have a chance coming from 10, playing an extra week and being any type of force in the finals.

McLachlan joked that if he had his way the wildcard round would even feature this season. But he may only need to wait 12 more months to get his wish anyway. "There was more interest in a wildcard round leading into finals than I thought there would be," McLachlan said

What's everyone's thoughts on this

If the season finished now we would play off against Richmond for 7th spot, I like the idea but you would be [censored] if you finished 7th then got knocked out of finals before they began, would make what the dogs did last year extremely hard as you have 5 elimination finals to win a flag, I think they should give it a go still would make they last few rounds very interesting

Lemme double up.

Innovation for innovations commercial gain sake. .. ugh.

It would just be our luck next year to finish 7th and get knocked out by 10th before finals

It's not the worst idea let's take last years ladder

wild card games

bulldogs v port

kangaroos v saints

I think bulldogs would have won and saints were in form so most likely would have replaced kangaroos who were cooked, but top 6 get weekend off so suddenly finishing top 4 becomes relevant again and it would have made it extremely hard for bulldogs to win the flag if that happened

My reading on that is that the wildcard round is  8 v 9 and 7 v 13 ( 13th being top of the bottom 6)

The more changes the merrier. Everyone loves heaps of changes. Just keep changing [censored] until changing [censored] is what the sport is about. Don't even have wins and losses anymore, just different changes each week.

I don't think they understand what a wildcard is or why it exists

All they need to do is create some fairness in the fixture. That's it. No need for 17-5, 18-5, wildcard weekends ad infinitum. Just have a rolling fixture alternating home and away each time you play an opponent. Either that or decide the double up games on the prior years ladder (so 1st has double ups against 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th & 16th).

This isn't about fairness, it's about marketing and promotion. The sooner the Dil [censored] off the better, he is FAR worse than Demetriou.

Once the wildcard games are played in China I'm on board

No... no.. no, no just [censored] no Gill you giant cat. Worry about verbal abuse on the field against someone's wife when you are "promoting" a women's comp (to make more money) rather than a "wildcard" game (money making scheme that will be chit) of no relevance.

It's like they're trying to turn the sport into BASEketball

Did you mean basketcase-ball?

When do the fans get a say in the changes being made to the game/comp year on year? Just let things breathe FFS, the comp is just getting over the introduction of the northern expansion teams and the compromised drafts. Just let things go for a few years.

For Funks Sake Gil - leave it alone for a bit would you.

It's just an extended final series by another name. 2 more elimination finals that would see only 39% of the competition not play off in finals - what an absolute farcical suggestion.

Since it has become an 18 team competition only once has a team in 10th finished with a win rate of better than 50%. All other years they've finished with 50% or worse. Why should we reward teams with a finals spot when they have only won half of their games or even less?

Oh here's another suggestion for you Gil: Why don't we just present the players from the bottom placed side with well tried medals after the GF instead of the presentation of the winners medalions? And they can do the lap of honour and let the GF winners just quietly walk off the ground without any recognition at all?

I can't even score you at 39% for this suggestion Gil and that means it is a big "F" for fail!

So tanking to finish 13 instead of 10,11,12 will become some new art form.

Gil - sit back and just leave the bloody game alone, or better still fix the schedule to make it fair FFS.  Or better still, resign!

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
