The statistics are out for the game and these are the worst set of numbers I've seen in my time for an AFL aligned club. Proves the view that many at the ground had that (with a couple of obvious exceptions and an injured Angus Brayshaw) the players were acting as witches hats for most of the day.

Not much joy from the VFL affiliated players either.

What's going on down there, KC? Why have we been going so poorly?

Are the Northern Blues actually any good?

was previously reported harmes had 41 disposals (and i saw one at 45)  versus 34 quoted above. makes one wonder where all these stats come from

What's going on is that with injury and suspensions the club is not fielding a competitive team each week. This week there 11 MFC listed players on the field at the start and a couple of minutes in the number was reduced to 10. I believe there were other injuries as well. Last year there were many times when the Scorpions had 16 or 17 AFL listed players (including experienced warriors like Grimes, Trengove, M Jones, Dunn and Garland) as well as three players who were drafted at the end of the year. The problem is to do with a lack of good VFL cattle especially in the big man department.

With regard to the stats, the ones put up recently are the official figures - obviously from a different source that does the ones that are put up during the game.

Completely understandable WJ but it does raise the problem as I mentioned earlier that it is hard for the players to obtain/maintain AFL standard if the VFL team lacks structure. Nothing can be done about it other than to hope next year is better from an injury viewpoint.

Re the players that replaced the drafted players I would be interested to know how does the salary cap work for an aligned club and are we considered a"good club" among the other aligned clubs from a destination viewpoint.

PS: On the other hand during the 70's and 80's when we never made finals I can remember some good reserves teams so perhaps it is just cyclical. (Remember Keogh.. won the medal for the reserves comp twice !!)

Not to mention the AFL listed Newton, Terlich, Michie et al.  We were regularly racking up 500 disposals last year with all of these plodders who, while not upto it at AFL level, were dominant at VFL level, most of them consistenly getting over 30 possies a week.

Add in the fact that last year we had Jake Spencer in the ruck dominating down there every week, Tim Smith consistently clunking marks next to Weideman, occasional cameos from Dawes and the likes of Salem, and the emergence of Joel Smith, and there's a huge void of experience and polish down at Casey this year compared to last.

I'm not surprised by their drop off in form at all, remember last year was one of our best years injury wise in a long time

UNDERMANNED by KC from Casey

An undermanned Casey Demons outfit travelled to Preston City Oval and surrendered the four premiership points on offer with barely a whimper against the Northern Blues.

The odds were stacked against the visitors from the very start. The Blues had the luxury of resting a couple of their AFL listed players but were still able to take the field with 19 Carlton-listed players while the Demons with a long list of injuries among their AFL squad had only 11 MFC players. The advantage in those numbers was evident in the first minute when Kristian Jaksch goaled and the home side was never headed from that point.

Soon after, the visitors were dealt with another blow when Angus Brayshaw left the field after being involved in a fourth head-high clash in the past year. The young Demon seems destined for at least a month on the sidelines before returning to the game. The incident cast a pall over the team which went into a complete shell for the remainder of the opening term. Casey's first score - a point - came well into time on.

After an early Jay Kennedy-Harris goal, the effort was hardly better in the second quarter. The Demons conceded four goals on the trot to move to a 39 point lead at the main break.

Sometimes, a break in play can lead to a change in momentum but that was not to be for Casey as the Northern Blues banged on another five unanswered goals after half time before Bayley Fritsch scored his first for the day late in the quarter. By then the deficit was 65 points.

A face-saving four goal to two final term was better but the 55 point loss will cut deep, particularly because so many players struggled to get their hands on the ball. Fritsch could hold his head high after kicking two of those final quarter goals to finish with three for the day. He was well supported by mature age recruit Sean Dwyer.

Of the Melbourne listed players Alex Neal-Bullen and James Harmes (34 touches each) worked hard against the odds and Jack Trengove gave his all with 25 disposals. However, the fact is that the team is currently lacking the necessary height and strength and will have to lift enormously if it is to feature in this year's final series.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
