Glenn Elliott - another one of my favourite players.

I liked him at the Saints and loved it when he crossed over. Used to work with my mum, she couldn't speak highly enough of him as a person.

My memories are just as fond - I can recall the evening I looked up all 40 possession in a match winners for Melbourne, and discovered we had a player I'd previously never heard of named Glenn Elliott in the 70s who did it once, about 4 years before I was born.

Am I making you feel old yet? :-)

Edit:  Wells also took 16 marks out of a team total of 60 marks in that 48 possession game .... an enormous number for a centreman back in those days.

You could say that Elliott was the first effective tagger, although he was much more than a tagger (pure taggers don't get 40 possessions). My Grade 6 teacher was Bob Murray, the St Kilda full-back in the 60s & 70s (remember Mike Williamson's "Hit the boundary son!" in the '66 GF?), and we used to go & watch him play, so I had a bit of a soft spot for the Saints at the time, and knew their players.

He played in the centre, against some of the absolute stars of the game, and would just play them one-on-one, and absolutely smash them. He'd hold them to a handful of possessions & get 25-30 himself. He was slow, an average kick, not a great mark, but just got the job done week after week.

I think he got a knee injury just before he came across to us, and only played a season or so before injuring his knee again.

I was about 10 but the memory still rankles. If my memory is correct a few years earlier we thought Stan Alves was finished as a player, then he went to North and won a flag in 77.

As I recall we were completely gobsmacked by the move ... there was no lead-up talk, nothing.  The first time we heard about it was when the deal had been done.  But it's a long time ago and the memory can sometimes play tricks.

There were rumours that we needed the money to pay the other players but I've since read that the amount of money was significantly less than 200k.  Who knows?  Vinnie Cattoggio & Michael Young came as part of the deal (but they came to the club in the following season)

Wells was a favourite of mine and still is - he was a dynamic centreman who could take a strong overhead mark, could kick the ball well and racked up the possessions.  8 or 9 top five finishes in the B & F and a 2nd place in the Brownlow.  He could really play.

Their best year together was 1976 when we just missed the finals ... Alves went to North at the end of '76 and then another top player in Hardeman left for SA at the end of 1977.  That period between '77 & '81 tested the supporters no end.

But the aforementioned players all gave great service to the club (along with Robbie) and they were about our only really good players back then (Fowler was also terrific and Biffin always gave his all)

Yeah, sounds about right to me. My best mate's favourite player was Alves, was shattered when he left, then it was Wells, was shattered again. A very tough period.

Gary Hardeman was another absolute A-grader, I can't remember him ever being beaten at CHB, although he played on some great CHFs. He was one of the few who could compete on equal terms with the likes of Royce Hart.

Hardeman was a great player ... we never played finals back then so therefore we were rarely on the 'replay' ... a lot of neutral supporters didn't get to see how good he was.  Back in the day I had a lot of Richmond mates and they all admired Hardeman.  As you said, he played consistently well on Royce Hart (who was a star)

Backmen often go unnoticed in B & F's and Gary was no exception.  2 thirds were his best finishes but I'm fairly sure he came runners-up in a Brownlow as well.  He was an absolute gun with a great set of hands.

But we haven't lost our 2 match winners for 10 weeks.  And yes we will forgive a few losses but I wouldn't like to see us accept that injuries are the reason we lost the last 3 games. I know that is not what you are saying nor suggesting but others on this site are.

So to give folks some comparisons:

• The nearest is WCE who have lost both first choice ruckman for extended periods, their 3rd backup ruckman/forward is out for 5-6 weeks and they have an equally long list of injured depth players. Some will claim they keep winning because they are flat track bullies.  But last night they smashed a team we let pinch a game on our home turf a few weeks ago when we didn't have in game injuries.
• Another is the young, inexperienced WB lost their ruckman Roughhead in the second quarter of the 2016 prelim final but still found a way to win.  The main reason they won is because their leaders stood up and they had another 200+cm player on the ground (which teams nearly always do even during the season games) so they were able to stick to their game plan and structures.  For various reasons our structures  completely fell apart vs Richmond.

I agree that early injuries in games (and suspensions) have hurt but there were other factors that contributed to the three losses. 

What I'm finding a little frustrating is a growing narrative on DL that "we lost/will lose games because of injuries and suspensions, ipso facto injuries will cost us more games and finals".  I feel we can't afford to think 'oh, x+x is out' and that is why we lost/will lose.  I'm not suggesting you think like this Nasher as you are one of the more objective posters on this site. 

That narrative may make some people feel warm and fuzzy but if we accept it, it we will mask other problems that caused the 3 losses.  They have been done to death in other threads so won't back track here.

I'm incredibly proud of how our team has fought each game this year and love how they are going about it.  That will help us win a lot more games than some people may think.  But I have gone past accepting that injuries/suspensions caused all 3 losses and will be the reason for more.

I remember running on to the ground after the siren, back when you could do that. If you were fast enough you could catch the players before they got to the race. I back slapped Hardeman 33 a few times, it was like slapping your hand against a concrete wall. He used to towel Royce Hart on a regular basis, and could he take a mark....
