Copped a small corky and is pretty sore but will be fine, his cold should be all cleared up by next round too

The Casey Demons won their first VFL game under their new brand name with a 46 point victory over the North Ballarat Roosters who last week suffered the debacle of a 30 goal defeat at the hands of Richmond. 

The win was a not altogether convincing one in light of the fact that the Demons entered the game at odds on - the shortest price in my memory of $1.001 which means that you would have to bet $1,000.00 to win a dollar.

And very early in the piece, even that single dollar was in question in the slippery conditions under a lights at Casey Fields as the much-improved North Ballarat stood tall against the Demons when but for some inaccuracy in front of goal they might have held the lead at the first break. 

The Roosters whose stocks were boosted by several key players including veteran Lachie George from suspension for his 150th VFL game, rebounded well and even when the Demons hit their straps to kick four consecutive goals in the first half of the second quarter, they were able to counterpunch with consecutive goals before the dominance of Tom Bugg and breakout forward Bayley Fritsch gave the Demons a near five goal buffer at half time.

When the Demons again threatened to blow the game apart in the third quarter, they were thwarted by three goals from newcomer in Jacob Cooke-Harrison so that they had barely increased their lead by the final break.  

Tom Bugg continued to imprint his name on the game and finished with an impressive 32 disposal, five goal game that was also highlighted by eight tackles. He was assisted by a significant contribution from the VFL listed Demons led by Ed Morris, the fast-improving Aloysio Ferreira and Fritsch who finished with four goals. Mitch White was solid in defence and the experience of Cam Pedersen and Jack Trengove were important. The loss of Angus Brayshaw to another head knock put a dampener on the team's 46 point win.

Coach Justin Plapp would have been pleased by the efforts of some of his younger brigade. Young ruckman Mitch King did well on return from an ACL injury suffered in the opening round of 2016 while Dion Johnston was lively up forward and tackled strongly. His only blemish was his kicking for goal - his return for the day was three points. Goy Lok who missed some easy shots last week finally hit the target with a goal and was also nippy around the forward line.

The Demons travel to Skilled Stadium for next week's televised game against the Cats.

I'll focus on the real positives of the game which were Mitch King's return to footy and Buggy dominating.  Mitch King dominated the ruck against pretty much no real opposition but looked really good and got involved around the ground which was great.

On the game itself I thought Casey struggled to get going in front of a tiny crowd, I fear for these 7pm starts but it doesn't seem to be getting the crowds in with the dew and the earlier rain not helping the standard of game.  

Bugg -  Was in everything and one of the only Casey players to be clean with his disposal, while his team mates were over possessing he recognized the conditions  and got the ball forward.  Looked a class above all game and by a country mile the best player on the ground.

Pederson - Played mostly forward  and competed well but is not in the best form, not clunking any marks at the moment and would like to making more impact on the scoreboard.

Trengrove - Was the tagged player this week, struggled to have an impact in the first half from the midfield but switched to half back and made a real impact with his ball use behind the play.   Jack's decision making is elite and seems to try and to do the team things all the time, doesn't fumble and his athleticism seems to be getting better.  

Hullett - Played well in defense without being remarkable, good return for his first game of the year and will look to build form.

Mcdonald  - Was solid and efficient with disposal, was taken off at half time probably for Monday Nights game as an emergency.

Johnston -  Best game so far in the VFL including the praccy matches, only thing lacking was his finish for goals which he rushed a few times.  Showed some real good composure with the ball  in the F50 to setup team mates.

Maynard - Really getting involved and starting to become a reliable midfielder, decision making is improving but doing better than expected at this stage.

Kennedy - Really busy all day and had one of his better games, disposal needs to be worked on still and doesn't hurt as much as he should with his speed.

Kent - Never really got going all night, fumbled and unable to produce his best.

Keilty - Played as a Ruck Forward and is improving every week in the role, being devolped as a utility KPP for AFL level.

King - The highlight of the night for me, wasn't as good in the second half but I was super impressed with his return.  Got involved in the play around the ground and is running ability and athleticism for his size was surprisingly good, not afraid to kick as well and looked like old school ruck rover than a lumbering ruck man type.  

White - Solid game from Mitch, kicks the ball very well and doesn't lose contests often.  

Brayshaw - Started slowly before starting to get more involved in the second qtr before his unfortunate late hit.  It was in play for those saying it was behind play, it was on the far side to where I was so hard to say how hard the contact was.

 

 

 

    

Mitch White is an interesting player in my opinion. Has the heigh and strength 188cm 88kg for maybe that 3rd tall defender and definitely has that neat left foot kick that we lack down back.

Maybe a promotion the next couple of weeks??

Under the present game plan he has little chance. His form at VFL is solid but he lacks the flair and speed to push his way into the AFL team bar significant injuries.

I was hoping for a different outcome but it does not look promising.

He has been named in the bests the first 2 games at Casey.

It seems he has been moved through half back during games and his composure has been a bonus.

Might have been handy last week against Freo...

How about we give him a little bit longer before writing him off.

This seemed like it would be the most logical mode to add a string to his bow, an intercepting defender could suit him, but i fear that he couldn't play on the real zippy small forwards. But his ability to mark overhead and his courage would suit this role.

That said, it is probably our most stacked position on the list along with inside midfielder so he definitely has stiff competition.

this is the biggest issue i think in terms of his reinvigorating his career at melbourne - jones, viney, oliver, tyson, lewis are all clearly ahead of him in terms of inside ball users, and so too in terms of rotations are the likes of vince, salem and petracca form half-back / half-forward coming into the number of players around the ball.

he can't play 'outside' like others as he's awfully slow, and his disposal is just not 'clean' enough.

it's a really sad situation - it's amazing he's managed to get back at all considering his foot injury.

Agree on point about the freo game (and the last point for that matter). At risk of repeating myself Trenners obvious lack of speed is no doubt an issue but for him, given that is not going to change much, the critical issue is more the speed of the rest of the team. You don't need the whole team to be jets, just 6 or 7 mid size players with really good leg speed. Trenners big problem is that we don't have 6 or 7 such players. We have Hunt, Kent, Oliver, Frost, JKH, and perhaps Kennedy and that is about all. I guess that is close but for example Hunt and kennedy are in the magoos. 

Where trenner's opportunity lies is that we still have too many players who make poor decisions and cough the ball up to often. He does both very well, which as you rjay would have been very handy against Freo. if we can get enough leg speed around him i am confident he could play regular senior footy off the half back or in the middle as an extractor and distributor.

On reflection you could probably add Stretch and Garlett to that list, so not too bad in some senses. Which is good for trenners.

Dazzle, the coaching staff, paricularly Plapp and Macca, really rate him, another one who has had a rotten run with injury

Reads the ball really well and racks up intercept marks when fit

Just needs a clean run at it

Seems to have been around forever but only turned 21 a couple of weeks ago

I rate him too. Its a pity he had those injury setbacks right before JLT because i think we would have seen some games from him by now, especially since Wagner Smith and Hibberd went down with injuries. 

 

I hope I'm wrong but I think White is a plodder at AFL level. Too slow.

Is King anywhere near capable of playing a neuatralising ruck role at senior level in the short term until Spencil gets back Melon??
