Although recruiting manager Jason Taylor was all but set on which player he wanted to recruit with the club's first pick, Gawn's character assessment helped confirm Filipovic's selection.

"There were a couple of times that I'd come in to the club on a Monday morning and ask ‘Jase’ whether he had seen him (Filipovic) play on the weekend," Gawn told AFL.com.au.

I think you need to read what I replied to and then read what I typed, gone off a bit early there McQ, bit of premature discombobulation, I even asked Max's opinion of him

Yeah nah.  

You're the one who went off a bit early by stating that Max was not consulted.

Do you think that with Max bugging Jason Taylor about Flippers was all one way conversation? Taylor would have obviously asked Max for extra details.

ATARS mean very little in the scheme of things. One of my friends got 99.90 (school was [censored], we were the first class to not have a student with a perfect score of 99.95). To get a score like that, you need multiple 50's (perfect score in a subject). He now smokes his life away on weed, sponging off his girlfriend. My brother got 60 something and has a great job as a project manager for a gas wholesaler.

It's a number that gets you into uni, or not. It's not a measure of intelligence or work ethic.

Choke life is an amazing thing, sometimes people (children) judged at young ages don't meet the "norm". Sometimes people are "better" in different ways. 

Sometimes kids just fing hate school and make an amazing story out of their own life outside of data/scores/spreadsheets and databases.

What is a study score?

A study score shows how well you have performed in a study at Unit 3 and 4 level, compared to everybody else in Victoria who took that study. Study scores calculated by the VCAA will be used by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to calculate the ATAR.

The maximum study score is 50. Each year, and for every study, the mean study score is set at 30. A score of between 23 and 37 shows that you are in the middle range of students; a score of 38 or more indicates that you are in the top 15%.

For studies with large enrolments (1,000 or more):

• 2% of students will get a score on or above 45
• 9% of students will get a score on or above 40
• 26% of students will get a score on or above 35
• 53% of students will get a score on or above 30
• 78% of students will get a score on or above 25
• 93% of students will get a score on or above 20.

I got a 45 in chemistry and I stopped attending class halfway through out of protest, as I was talked into doing it as an extra unit instead of having spares.

I'm no genius, so Filipovic getting 40-odd in a unit commonly referred to as "veggie maths" doesn't impress me.

Did your 45 in Chemistry (without trying) get you onto an AFL list (or top 22 on that list)? Any lad who has the commitment to get drafted whilst not neglecting his studies is alright by me. ? Not sure what criteria meet your expectations as a player?

Apparently he hasn't spent a cent but he has lost his temper nearly every day.

Well, it looks as if Max had a fair bit to do with the Filipovic recruitment after all if you go by this article from the MFC site - 

Filipovic eager to take it to the Max

And why not? After all, he's our player and was helping out in a coaching role at Ormond and the Dragons and his opinion about the way he plays and about his character would certainly have been worthwhile seeking in the circumstances.

In this case saying "Max wasnt consulted" is totally indefensible and really casts a shadow on otherwise good reporting.

I think in the end it was the opinions of the recruiting people at the club that mattered when making the decision to recruit him.

It was obvious from the pre draft discussion that we were always going to choose a ruckman late in the main draft or more likely as a rookie. The field wasn't particularly strong and Jason Taylor and his team would have had him in their sights. He was, after all, ruckman for Vic Metro in the Under 18 championships and they won the title.
