2017 AFL Rookie Draft

Featured Replies

Easily some very talented youngsters undrafted that I think will definitely earn a rookie opportunity. Sometimes the motivation drives them more than the drafted selections.

Louis Cunningham

Sam Walker

Brodie Romensky

Oscar Junker

Jeremy Goddard

Bailey Morrish

Hamish Brayshaw

Lachlan Walker

Oliver Hanrahan

Jonty Scharenberg

and a few more

According to Taylor we will only take 2 selections which seems a bit disappointing given we've got room for 3 more, plus a cat B, plus replacing Lefumbles if he quit already.

We obviously have faith in Joel Smith and Maynard as options if needed and don't want to dig too deep in to rookie picks.

In a perfect world I'd take a ruckman, a tall defender/versatile tall and another outside runner.

Being we made a decent profit it is interesting we will not take our full fill of rookies particularly with HL likely freeing an immediate spot. That says to me we have close to tapped out on our list of players we think are worthy of even a rookie investment.

2016 Rookies

5 - Max King, Viv Michie, Josh Wagner, Mitchell White, Joel Smith (Cat B)

Delisted Max King and Viv Michie

Upgraded Wagner

3 spots free

Added 1 Cat B player

2 spots free?

Do Cat B count to rookie list limit?

What is rookie list limit?

Could rookie list disappear in new CBA with expanded senior list?

Taylor said we are taking two picks.

still 3 spots availabvle on rookie list,

you can have 4 rookies and 3 cat.B rookies.

This article covers some of the players who missed out - The snubbed AFL draftees that deserve rookie lifelines.

A few points regarding the rookie draft:-

• Adelaide are able to take Ben Jarman and Geelong Sam Simpson as automatic rookie selections provided they aren't taken in the Pre Season Draft on Monday.

• None of the Casey players in the mix were drafted yesterday. I'm expecting at least two of them to be rookied.

• Norwood's Alex Villis was originally expected to be a first or second round selection but has been diagnosed with a heart condition that is potentially career threatening.

• The decision as announced by Jason Taylor that the club will only take 2 rookies even though there are 3 vacancies on the rookie list is a bit of a mystery. The club is usually open about these sorts of matters - I wonder if they're go to tell us why?

What is the rationale behind opting for only two picks on Monday, instead of three (and/or a third Category B rookie)? Surely if HL pulls the plug it would be handy to have extra insurance, plus l am sure that Plapp would also appreciate more depth at Casey.

Any good ruck options?

Disappointed we didn't take Darcy Cameron when we had the chance.

According to AFL website (under Draft Hub - Preseason & Rookie Draft) we have picks 6 & 24.

Well that says it all Thanks Viscount

Melbourne can have 5 A grade Rookies and 1 B Grade (6 in total) not 7

Really hope we grab McInerny as a rookie.  We need to be developing another ruck even if it's only as backup.

I hope so

They will come up with someone out of the Blue for sure for the other pick

So Dion Johnstone was a preferred rookie pick for the bulldogs, and we nabbed him in the main draft?

i think we have two picks, and have committed to Take Allsopp as a cat B rookie as well.

Pretty sure we 'uncommitted' from Allsopp a few weeks ago. Check the Allsopp thread for more details

Agreed and as has been said elsewhere, the club should be telling us why we are taking two category A rookie picks. It's not as if they come at a great cost and if the last rookie picked doesn't make it, what have we lost?

The club has to go into the season with 44 players on its list with between 4-6 rookie spots, not including Cat B rookies. Minimum 4 rookie spots have to be filled.

If the intention is to only make 2 live selections in the rookie draft then I wonder if Joel Smith or Corey Maynard are being moved to the main rookie list for some reason. Either way, the spots need to be filled.

Can Cat B rookies be promoted to play senior AFL mid season as a nominated rookie?

If not, the as you suggest, perhaps the club wants to give it self the option of trying one of the aforementioned if their development and form justifys it.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
