They tried to dope their way to a flag.

Not a few rogue players trying to get an edge. The club. Nearly the whole team, with the connivance of the coaches and administrators, were on a cocktail of performance enhancers.

When the AFL found out, they tried to cover it up. They weren't interested in the corruption of their comp, until it became public knowledge. Only then did they haul arse to "get to the bottom of it" while at the same time trying to minimise the punishment.

We won't hear the whole story until a jacked off player spills his guts, some 10 or more likely 20 years in the future when it's ground away at him to the point where it's too much to bear any longer.

TL;DR: the club doped up big time and the AFL tried to get them off.

A good mate of mine played VFL with the Dons in the 60's and attends all Past Player functions. He said the reason that Dean Robinson was paid a motza was because he is the one with all the records.

I am 99.9% sure mr dank has the records and knows very well what they would reveal if they ever became public. 

I mean imagine the stink Essendon would have kicked up if they thought someone had records proving they were innocent.

Why did the Bombers lash out at the AFL, ASADA, WADA, etc, etc, sack their CEO, sack their football boss, sack their high performance manager,  wage a PR war through the media, try to get the Feds to kill off the investigation ....

But the bloke who did the injecting has been treated with kid gloves.

Have any of the 34 players ever said a bad word about him?  You would think they should especially after being rubbed out for a season.  Strangely quiet though ... 4 years later. 

Anyway, some of us were saying exactly the same thing as to what you've said both here & elsewhere in early 2013 TF.  Not that many of the footy loving public were ever listening back then.  Even now many just want to turn a blind-eye. 

But that's the nature of sports fans the world over ... we shouldn't ever expect anything otherwise.  The media will in turn reflect the public sentiment and there you have it.

At a guess I'd say there's any number of copies of the records - and those records will almost certainly never see the light of day either.

The big losers were the EFC ... they are still in recovery mode and will be for quite some time.  As for the drugs-in-sport issue, most have come around to the realisation that all sports are tainted with PED use (with some more so than others) 

But there's big money at stake in sport and those monies must be protected.  Could have said that 30 or 40 years ago too - it's not necessarily a recent phenomenon.

I'm assuming that you've heard all of the above before but others might not have.

Well I'm nearly 'over-it' but mainly because I reckon the punishment was fair enough. 

What I would like to see is an admission of guilt and for the EFC club to face up to it's responsibilities to the sport - won't happen though.  They remind me of common criminals who never admit to their crimes.

Weekly blood tests which results in blood-passports would help enormously ... instead of that the players are subjected to 1 or 2 urine tests (on average) per season.  Token.

Ted and Macca....they got caught out, that's all that's different. I can remember going to a Carlton do out at Donnybrook in the mid sixties. Stuff all over the place including rocks and all the players.

What I would love to see is a bloody big sign outside the G (or even better, inside the G) stating 'Never forget the dons and Dank'.

Would be a nice touch as a tribute to our diggers as it plays on the sign in the primary school in Villers-Bretonneux which reads 'Never forget Australia'. This sign is in place as thanks to not only our diggers who took the town 99 years ago tomorrow, but also as thanks to the Victorian School children who raised money after the war to help rebuild their school in France. On an aside and sorry for the history lessen, the school children of Villers-Bretonneux in return raised money for the rebuilding of the schools lost in the Black Saturday bush fires, a truly special relationship forged in blood and tears that far too few know anything about.

Great post, Chris - my daughter's was the school that they raised money for - (or one of them - can't remember if they helped others, but they were great for us) - it was very moving, and a great boost for the kids.

"Sports Minister Greg Hunt has proposed an Australian sports court as part of a national sports plan being developed by the federal government, the Australian Sports Commission and other peak sporting bodies".

A long time coming but never to late.

I fully expect the AFL to activate its lobby machine to get that quelled or watered down in some way so they can continue to play to their own rules.

Time will tell if a Sports Court does happen.
