We should get 18/19 yrs that is mobile, doesn't need to bulk up a great deal. The draft pick will have to be a diamond in the rough. I wouldn't be surprise O'Mac and Weed do some ruck work. That would make Pedo redundant. We need to give the so called young players intensive training.

Vardy struggles to get on the park but could be an option, Cameron's stats are impressive but haven't seen any of him.

I think we need to keep Spencer as a back up for Max and give Mitch King time to develop.

...but we need someone who can play that forward/ruck role.

These guys would be looked at for sure.

Anyone thought that Spencer might crack it and take an offer somewhere else? Would not blame him. That would force our hand. He should have got a few runs in the ones this season based on his form in the twos but Roos had other strategies that we know and I don't disagree with.

In view of our finishing position on the ladder can anyone explain why our first draft pick is so low? Clubs that finished above us will get much earlier picks. How is this so? Sorry, but I must have missed something. Thanks in anticipation for the reason this is happening.

We traded our pick from this year to have 2 first round picks last year.  Got us the Weid at 9 and Ollie at 4.

Thanks buck. I guess getting Oliver  was a big bonus. Lean times this year I reckon. Hope we can bolster our list some other way.

And getting a year into a young KPF talent like Weideman...

Thats what we wanted to hear.  Nothing worse than a boring trade period for the Demons.  This is Goodwins team now, and he will hopefully leave no stone unturned in bringing talent into the club.

Interesting. I assume this means he's meeting with a lot of players still in the country; which, arguably, would be players still in finals?

That being said, we still have our work cut out for use because we have little trading currency to help us secure any players. We sold our first round pick last year and our second will go on Hibberd.

Usually the opposite of whatever Tony says is true.

Goodwin is watching a lot of the finals footy games. Shrewd move.

Not sure that means anything about trades. Given the majority of clubs, players and managers are based in Melbourne I don't really think flying around the country would achieve much.

Well I hope he was paying attention on Thursday, because if there's a blueprint for the direction of this club then it's what the Bulldogs are doing.

Maybe he was flying between Moorabbin and Essendon airports?

He was at Essendon when they tried to fly to Wangaratta wasn't he?

Have nothing whatsoever other than the observation of last year to run with here but the club became very inventive at creating picks where there were none.

Much harder this year but I suspect 3 or 4 names will leave having added a little to the bank in terms of trade currency. This will be run through the club's Alchemy dept and we'll end up with probably one shot at a decent import.  That might have to be our lot this year....that a a few Smokies perhaps..

Makes me a little bit nervous. Hopefully just completing due diligence on our recruiters recommendations. Not sure if we want the head coach too involved in individual recruiting decisions

Could easily mean he's personally attending NEAFL, SANFL & WAFL matches, to get a proper read on draft smokies, considering the lateness of our draft picks.

(If there is any truth to Tony's tweet)

All it says is..... he's LOOKING. All coaches 'look'

Love that there are little to no leaks coming from the club. Shows we really have a professional unit at work.

But god damn its boring as the proverbial.... haha

Still think as well as Hibberd they'll look to bring in a forward/ruck and an outside mid.

How they go about it, and who those players are no one knows???

That's what I think too, I'd assume it will be (in the case of a ruck/foward) a second/third string player at another club. I'll be most interested in who the outside mid will be, assuming we go for one. We haven't had much success with Michie or Newton, so we may see a younger player from one of the expansion clubs targeted.

Yep. Boring. But I when leaks happen we quickly absorb and want more. Hibberd looks like joining us, but because we have known this for months we no longer find it interesting and demand more.

In reality, we have no first round pick and will likely have to trade our second for Hibberd. We have bugger all currency left and will likely be small players this year.

Agreed, much harder this year as the AFL significantly reduced the Northern teams' ability to combine lower picks into an academy bid. You now need to have spots on the list equal to (or greater than?) the number of live picks in the draft I think.

Very glad we were able to take advantage of it for the 1 year it was possible though, it shows our team are thinking.

I'd back them in to pull off another surprise.

So Hawthorn are unprofessional because it's been "leaked"  that they are interested in O'Meara, Mitchell and Vickery, and are likely to get all 3?

People on here are out of touch with the modern AFL landscape. Most player movements are known before trade week, so to think that club have some ace up their sleeve is folly, and contrary to what GNF would have us believe.

The reality is that Hibberd is our only likely recruit of note this trade period.

Exactly.

Imagine the furore on here if the report said he wasn't looking?

As much as we've picked up some future stars with early picks the last couple of years, I trust our recruiters with later picks as we've picked up some gems with Gawn Jetta hunt and the McDonald's. If we had the same recruiters a few years ago I'd rather late picks as we didn't get out early picks right. We really need another ruck because if Gawn goes down we are screwed.. Would love a Dangerfield type, he is just so explosive and we really lack that. Would love to have a player like Betts but only younger to crumb around Hogan and Weideman. Garlett is too inconsistent and probably won't be around when we are seriously ready for the flag. We have some holes to fill but once we get that right we will be a seriously good team.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
