Seems fair. Two quality players plus Weed, from a draft we didn't have a lot to offer. And hey, if one of the late picks or someone in the rookie draft turns out to be a gem , then we;ve not just won, but killed it dead.

I also know that 12 months is a long time in football, and that upgrading Smith now, who is relatively a project player that has been in the system for 12 months, and Wagner, who has definitely shown "something" but let's see him do it again next year.

He and Hunt on each back flank are the perfect compliment to each other.

Originally I thought Hibberd was worth an early 20s pick, so to get him for pick 29 and an upgrade of a later pick is a good result. 

I know Paul Roos had little to do with it, but Hibberd is a Roos-type player. Fans won't flock to get his number on their back but you can be sure he'll be a very useful role player for us for a number of years.

Also it's nice to see Petracca being so pro-Melbourne on his Twitter feed, even on his time off. Within minutes of the trade being completed he's on there welcoming Hibberd to the club. Dare I say it, 'bleeds red and blue' already.

I guess we folded which is a bit disappointing but we needed Hibberd in and to do the right thing by him, and we got a nice little steak knives upgrade.

Time to turn that upgrade plus Dunn plus next years 2nd rounder in to a top 30 pick this year.

Great result. The deal is fair and, while it leaves us without any early picks, it's good to see other posters realising that our first rounder from this draft is Weideman. Adding Lewis, Hibberd and the return of Melksham makes this a terrific trade period for us. 

Add in the fact we have signed up all our young players and the future looks bright.

No necessarily. We might have decided to knock this deal over to leave time for doing others. Rather than still having horns locked with EFC at 11:45 tomorrow.

Spending pick 29 on Hibberd is hardly a disaster. "Money" well spent in fact.

We don't need to, we effectively picked up Lewis and Hibberd for our second rounder. Next years draft is stronger. Why would we burn next years 2nd rounder for a 2nd rounder in a weaker draft.

Unless the recruiting team have their eyes on a certain player, I don't really see much need to trade back into the first/second round. Weideman is essentially our first pick this year and we have enough young guys at the club now as it is.

Agree totally with this. Wagner showed enough and another preseason should add more. The more I see of Joel Smith the more he comes across as a real smokey who could be something unique. Add to this that Weideman is effectively our first round draft pick this year as well, and our inward changes are Lewis, Hibberd, Wagner, Weideman  Smith, and draft position 47. Very happy with this. 

Oops, forgot about Melksham who, although came to us via last year's trading, is in effective also an inward for this draft/trade period.

I don't believe that's true. That gets said every year. This year they are saying it's a deep draft for outside runners in an even top 30 or so picks and that's what we need. Without a first rounder this year I think it's important to have a 2nd rounder because you have a higher chance of a kid you rate very highly slipping to your pick.

I also think the momentum of adding another quality skilled youngster is important and we can give this kid a good run at Casey in ideal development conditions. Staying ahead of the draft is a handy advantage as well, it boosts our list quality. 

All up I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Totally agree, Hibberd's boot and Hunt's speed combined will help with the switch and opening teams upon the rebound.

That makes sense, & likely Mahoney was aware of this...  It probably helped us, as the Hawks would be desperate to rejig their midfield with young guns.  Hence the cheap pick arrangement for Jordan.

Another thought, is that rookies only need  to be put on for a 1 year minimum.  So using late round picks this year on upgrades also gives us a chance to bring in players (from a supposed weak draft) as rookies this year without committing to them for two years.

Also are the upgrades just a one year extension or do they then get the normal 2 year minimum of someone selected in the draft?

I'm certain that many people were saying last year that the 2016 draft was going to be a super draft.

Collingwood will not give up 47 +/- high picks for Dunn...they need all the draft points they can get for their father/sons

The following comments don't relate to your posts stuie its for the people who put up all sorts of hypothetical pick trades.

ie #28 = 703 points

# 47 = 316 points

# 57 = 182 points

# 59 = 158 points

And, hopefully for the last time, a club (with some exceptions) cannot have more draft picks than vacant list spots!!

Edit: we can use picks 102 and 120 to upgrade Wagner/Smith.
