Jack Watts signs for three years (21/7/16)

Featured Replies

I've been a massive Jack Watts fan since day dot. I remember getting my whole family all hyped up for his debut against Collingwood. He got creamed, they have laughed at him ever since. It has gotten to the point where they just cannot - and will not - accept that Watts is becoming a quality footballer. I feel as though a lot of opposition fans are in the same boat. But at some stage I think they will all have to admit that Watts is a quality football player. Good signing if true.

There are worse performed number 1 picks than Josh Fraser. Try Richard Lounder, for example.

Sure, but it was more fun yelling back 'Josh Fraser says hi!'

Lounder was also picked in an age where far less scrutiny and resources were placed in getting the right bloke with pick 1.

Great footballer, great bloke, great clubman, great signing- great news for the club!!!

Its hard to fly like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys.  List overhaul in last two years have slayed most (not all yet) turkeys.  He simply has had little talent around him.  Has been my favourite Dee along with N Jones for years.

think it is much more than that, ps. jack himself has changed in his application to the game, rather than his teammates. still, it always helps to play with better teammates.

who honour your leads!

This has been a very noticeable change, particularly in the last 4 weeks or so. With his increased confidence and output there has been a clear increase in the number of times (and confidence to do so) teammates go to him - even when one on one.

I assume this is often an instinctive decision and in the past the instinct was to bypass Jack. Not now. Like a virtuous circle.

That's a really GREAT post. Good on you SPC, I agree with everything you have said.  Jack is a very decent human being as well as footballer.

Had my little nephews photo taken with him at training before the Adelaide game.. He told my nephew if he came to the game, he would kick a goal for him.. When he snapped the one around the corner from 40 out, my little nephew told me that Jack had kept his word...

His level of interaction with kids is amazing and most of them leave wanting to get the number 4 on their back.

Interesting that T Mac was named BOG by most Demonlanders, but only got 1 vote from each coach

Must admit i am a little surprised Jayden Hunt isn't in there, not that it has anything to do with a Jack Watts thread.

Nice story thanks for sharing

Have been saying to a couple of mates (a hawk and a cat) for years that I would prefer Watts to Nic Nat (if Watts got to his potential). My mates laughed at me, as they often do, but one did concede that Watts had the potential.

I still stand by having Watts over Nic Nat and Jack is finally starting to show why I think that. He doesn't have the explosive wow factor Nic Nat does but Nic Nat only does that occasionally. Watts is starting to produce very good football consistently. Hopefully in another year or so I can bring this up with my mates again and see if they still laugh, hopefully after knocking over the cats or hawks!!

We had Howe so we can all say from experiance that a once or twice a month highlight is not worth a consitant footballer. That said Watts has a long way to go to win that debate... talk to us again when his next contract ends or is renewed and see where he is at then

I'll be happy when Watts re signs with the club.

Never more confident than when he had the ball in his hands.

I hope it helps. Because if he shows faith after all he's been through and seen, then the young pups have to believe the worst is over

I was a critic. I gave the kid hell. I couldn't be happier to be proven wrong and watch this great bloke become the footballer he was meant to be.

I know I should leave this alone but something just doesn't sit right with me when people make these sort of comments.  It's like the bully in the school yard who picks a fight, loses and then wants to be friends.

WGO I have no problem with critique.  What I hate is "gave the kid hell".  You've recognized you were wrong in your judgement (as we've all been on issues) and I just hope next time a player disappoints you you'll stick to critique and refrain from "giving them hell".  You'll have lots of opportunity to practice the skill - as we all will.

But that's just me.  Credit to you for honestly stating your position.

BTW, friggin fantastic that he's found his way and looks set for a meaningful second half of his career with us.

Fair enough Chris, at times we can be to quick to pass judgment. Patience has been a great virtue in judging Jack. He is beginning to flower like the team. No coincidence I think just as our past judgments were made when the team was so poor.  But I agree, he now compares favourably with Nic Nat and may well become the more important player to his team.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
