James Harmes re-signs

No; they can't. But they sure as hell can tell when a player is over 28/9 and they sure as hell can offer them one year deals with triggers based upon performance ala Vince and Cross (who are far better players).

He'd not long turned 27 in 2014 when he signed his last extension which was for 3 years. At the time he was in career best form.

Different to Vince and Cross who had come from other clubs and were in their late twenties.

Two down, one JH to go. Congrats to James. I think his ceiling may be somewhat underrated on here,

Agree.  James is gutsy, hard at the contest, has fair pace, is good overhead for his size, can kick a goal and will never die wondering.  He's only played a hand-full of games, so he just needs to continue learning as he gets games under his belt, and add consistency to his repertoire, and he will become a solid 'B Grader'.  All teams need players if his ilk.

I'd like to see Watts re-sign as well.

I reckon this kid is a 200 gamer.

But not the ones we really want.

Watts Tmac Jetta Garlett are the four I want to hear about.  Then Hogan.

Pumped re Harmes though.

Fully agree.  One to watch.  Will get more consistent with time but capable of a fair bit.

Hogan loves his surfing, and apparently heads down the coast most Tuesdays with Chunk and Nuts (Harmes). I appreciate it's only a small thing, but the decent surf in WA (eg Yallingup) is more than 3 hours drive from Perth.

And the sharks are bigger and slightly less friendly over there too.

Dunn is signed until 2017...which is a huge mistake given form. And i'd trade Tom McDonald for a better KPB if there are any available takers....

Hogan and Kent, yes.

Been away for a week, but see the comedy is still first class    trade TMc???

having some of our more speculative picks come into the side and play well at AFL level has been a huge part of our resurgence, outside our top end talent when Hunt, Harmes, Vanders, Wagner Jetta ( as a rookie ) who were all rookies or later picks come in and lock down best 22 spots it just ramps up the pressure for spots to a whole new level!

credit to the recruiting staff and the development programs at the club, i'm not sure there are any clubs who've been as consistently good with recruiting as we have, nearly every pick has been good.

Big call Biff. If he continues on this trajectory though, why not?

I think he's right though. Harmes is a really solid, under the radar player. Has great smarts and will fill a role really solidly for a long time.

Played well today. Harmes would've been on the radar of other teams. Good re-signing. Keeps playing well, he is becoming a very consistent AFL level player. What a great first up game after a re-signing.

Don't agree at all, actually. I thought he was one of our worst until he got those three last quarter goals.

Turned it over across half forward with almost every kick he had. Didn't cost us too much given the opponent but will destroy us against better sides.

11 goals this season already. Nathan Jones came third in our goal kicking tally last year with 12. Very handy little player.

I'd like to see him do it when the pressure's on. Most of those goals have come as we ski down the mountain, but he's still young. At the moment, I see him as a fringer.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
