POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 8

I thought I'd start this now as the game is essentially over.

I think we have played ok, endeavour and effort there, but we have been way to fumbly.

Quite often we have two players peel off to cover the same player which allows the quick kick over, this will get better with time.

we still handball too much instead of kicking but hopefully as the skills lift this will be a weapon.

Hogan must love it when watts gets the ball.

im not going to talk about the fIoggies or the run they are getting from the umps, but to beat them we need to get cleaner.

wasnt a win, but I thought we would lose by 30, but I can see if we improve our handling of the ball, get a few better players in and some like Olver, trac etc get more games we will play finals next year.

Can I have a job as an umpire?

Apparently you only have to do half the job and even then only the half you like.

But it's not over yet G!!

Been a very very frustrating game.

I hate the dogs.

I hate the umpires more.

Bloody frustrating

You are, however, now allowed to throw the ball.

Drop em all except Michie

That wasn't much fun was it!

How'd the bullies get to be so fn slick?

Other than the siren it was over. That's why I said essentially. :)

Was over an hour ago

Can't fault the effort of the players.  They had a dip all day.  We were just beaten by a side who ran just that extra bit harder and used the ball better going forward.

Some of our younger players, like Hunt, Wagner, Oliver, Harmes and Salem probably didn't give us enough, while some of their younger players did.  That's life.  We'll learn from it.  5 goals is a fair reflection of the game, really.

In terms of our defence, which people seem to be fixated on - remember that our midfield turnovers hurt us in that regard.  I agree that it needs tweaking, but it needs pressure up the ground and good ball use to function at it's optimum level.  We clearly didn't get that today.

One last thing - really pleased with the game from Stretch today.  Thought he was excellent.

Bring on next week.

Effort was good. Skills not great. They beat us at our contestant game today which I'm sure will sting the boys. The Bont was very good and the extra season or 2 they've had together as a group in the midfield really made them much cleaner around the ball.

Having said that not sold on the dogs. They are essentially a younger North Melbourne but without absolutely any spine. I can't imagine that they'll frighten many sides in September when the big blokes come out to play on the G.

Beaten by a better side. Jetta's really good. Jack Watts and Jesse Hogan should exchange some tips. They'd make a perfect player.

we shouldn't have won but what was the count? the 50s were ridiculous too

A creditable loss I suppose. We need to take out a couple of sides in the eight soon that when we can show improvement

Effort was first rate. They were just too strong in the tackle and much quicker on the spread. We're nearly there but not quite.

Roos might have to kick it up a bit....more than one change needed

Frustrating, at arms length all day, we're just not as good as them. Their short kicks through our defence are what the teams we've beaten can't do. Their kicking is top notch, their team defence just as good.

I liked the effort, thought we deserved to be closer but the umpires didn't pay [censored] our way.

I think the worst thing to take out of this is that the Bulldogs are better coached than we are. They always get to the right positions. Surely our coaching staff is being payed enough to be able to tell our players where to stand.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
