What are you basing this on ? His first 2/3's of his career as a forward where he was constantly in and out of the team because he couldn't string two good games together ( actually ...two good quarters)  or the last 3rd of his career where he has been solid and reliable as a defender....

Roos has thrown him forward a few times over the last two years and the bottom line is - he just ain't a forward.

Ftizpatrick kicked four against Brisbane and Jamar kicked 5 against Carlton and I kicked 6 against Mazenoid year 7's and none of us were forwards.

It was just Fr_ap opinion.  I agree with him re: Garland.  I actually think he could struggle to get back in the side as I see more benefit in playing Oscar ahead of him and potentially even Mitch White.

Where as we had differing opinions on Pedersen.  I thought Pedersen was quite good and provided a strong target.  I had him down as kicking 2.3 and I also note he was named in the best, but it's always a matter of opinion.

Was a good write up either way.

Some fat scrub from Casey just rolls right in to him. Very unfortunate. 

Could've at least got the free kick for a slide not that it would be much consolation.

I'm not sure if it is anything new with Garland though. Hes always been a mouse and has never had the skills to attack the game. I dont think he was bad, i just struggle to see the perceived leadership.

Surprises me pedo had that much of the ball. He wasnt bad either; no one was when we won by that much! I have higher expectations on him than most though as hes played a lot of vfl footy and is one of the older guys out there. 

To all those who enjoyed the write up, no problem at all. Was actually a great way to spend a quiet saturday night.

Shocking umpiring immediately after it as well. ANB points out that he's down multiple times, nothing comes of it. It ends up taking the physios nearly 2 minutes to get onto the ground with the stretcher. 

Trengove concussion is also at 2:40. 

No idea how that guy wasn't reported for the hit.

I don't know if it still holds true, but umpires in the reserves used to hate reporting players because they then had to show up to the tribunal hearing and give their evidence.  Much easier to "see nothing" than to give up your Monday night.

Always a tricky one whether to stop the game though. I think with a soccer influence (as in more people watching it and how players put the ball out to stop play) and focus on player safety we are much more for umps stopping the game, but historically it's been tough luck if you're down a player. But yeah, a ball up in pretty neutral territory early in a game, I'd stop it for at least 10 seconds to see if it's serious. A group of trainers and player not moving would probably then stop it for longer. 

And yeah. Bit hard to see all that happens with Trenners, looks like he taps the ball out in front and is planning to follow it up when the Frankston player just goes straight through him. Good job by Viv to catch him before he falls over. Another centre square incident that makes me think no one should be allowed in the centre square until the ball comes out.

VFL umpires are some forms of professionals though, they'd be attending trainings and looking to rise up the ranks. The centre umpire here has clearly missed the free, it happens. The off the ball umpire has seen the free kick which is a start but might not have seen it clearly enough to report the player. 

I know a prominent local radio announcer who does some weekend local league reserves umpiring who's very big on players sorting it out on the day as he works during the evenings.

He got 2 weeks for that Trengove hit.

DREAM START AT NIGHT by Ice Station 

 

The Casey Scorpions gave their coach Justin Plapp a dream start to the 2016 season with an emphatic 24-goal win over stand alone neighbour Frankston. 

Led out by new skipper Jack Hutchins, the Scorpions put a very strong team out on the field including 16 AFL listed players. They were expected to be far too strong for the struggling Dolphins who came out full of aggression but that withered early and the home side took advantage to the fullest by increasing their lead at every change despite being short on rotations as a result of three injuries early in the game. 

Jack Trengove's long-awaited return from a two year foot injury was put on hold early after he was concussed in the opening moments by a blow from the opposition skipper which earned him a two match suspension. Worse still was the injury to young ruckman Mitch King who suffered a second ACL injury in three years. Also off the ground by the main break was Jay Kennedy-Harris with a hamstring injury.

Despite losing their ruckman and giving away a huge advantage in height, the Scorpions won the overall ruck duels thanks to the double teaming of Declan Keilty and Cam Pedersen which allowed the team to dominate the stoppages with Alex Neal-Bullen and Angus Brayshaw which, in turn produced plenty of scoring opportunities and a record score for Casey against Frankston. Tim Smith (5 goals) and Sam Weideman (4) were the major recipients.

Boom recruit Christian Petracca who missed last year with a knee reconstruction made an excellent return to the game picking up over 30 touches and kicking two goals and three behinds. It was a good day from a Melbourne perspective with many young players standing out. Jayden Hunt was given a free rein to showcase his pace on the flanks, Oscar McDonald was outstanding in defence and rookies Joel Smith and Mitch White showed plenty of promise and great endeavour. The more mature players in Colin Garland, Viv Michie and Dean Terlich provided the steadiness needed to guide the youngsters even though the game resembled a practice match at times.

The VFL listed contingent also had a very good night with Tim Smith, who missed much of the latter half of 2015, outstanding up forward and James Munro hard in the clinches and a prolific ball getter, as was the dangerous Angus Scott. Declan Keilty underlined his promise in the ruck and around the ground capping the night off with three goals and the skipper was solid when required down back on a night where defenders had things easy due to the poor opposition. Youngster Connor Ambler, as 23rd player, also got into the action and did some nice things and finished with a goal on his debut.

Despite the percentage boosting start it's hard to take away too much from the one sided start to the season and Saturday's curtain raiser against Collingwood (albeit across the road from the MCG) will be a much better test for the flying Scorpions.

It's funny.  Garland & Hulett both had 17 disposals, however didn't stand out much to me at all. 

Oscar has 18 & White 21, only a few more possessions each, yet I thought they both stood out much more.

Exactly. After watching the replay, you can take the significance of the stats with a grain of salt. That Frankston side would struggle against a decent suburban side.

I tried watching the first quarter but the camera work is garbage.. The "cameraman" zooms in way to far and reacts to slow to when the ball is kicked.. Frames up the player on the wrong side.. Just yuk!

We need a token player in the development league that posters can whinge about.

Joel Smith seems to be coming on much too quickly for my liking.
