Bring on Round 1. Very strong team performance today, ball movement was exciting at times and we never let up for 3 quarters. Garlett is so good sometimes he almost gets bored and does something silly. Could have kicked more than 3 today. With Bugg, Kennedy and a fit Kent we seem to have a lot of depth. Watts looked stronger than I've ever seen at the contest. It's great to know it's not Hogan or nothing. Garland and McDonald also looked on song down back, as did Jones and Vince. We seem well poised for the first game

Loved the defensive pressue brought on by, Jeffy, kent, Harmes and Kennedy. We've struggled keeping the ball alive in our forward half but those guys were manic yesterday. 

Frustrated by the skill errors coming out of deep defense, while the idea is right the skills weren't great. Hoping with Dunn and Lumumba come back and if Bernie can play more half back this can be addressed. Not sure how many of their goals came from turnovers but it's one area if we tighten up on will make us much better.

 People say the NAB is meaningless but there is no denying there is a great deal of similarity between this ladder and what is expected to happen this year. If you moved WCE and Hawthorn towards the top, Richmond to 9th, there isn't too much out of place IMO Except of course us!

For those on here who criticised Salem:  '...Salem made a case for best on ground with 26 disposals, four marks, four inside 50s, six rebound 50s and a SuperGoal.'  Not sure what people expect tbh. 

Re the mistakes.  Goodwin said in his interview that “We want our players to be brave and bold so we have to cop the turnovers..."  Fans have called for players to be 'instinctive', to not hesitate - something we lost pre Roos.  Well it is happening:  'Brave and Bold'!  Soon, most fans won't even notice the mistakes and they will become fewer and fewer as the team masters 'Brave and Bold' football.  And as our victories mount!

On Jesse's goal kicking style Goodwin said he just got his foot movement wrong one time...we won't see that to often from Jess.  Said with a wry grin!

In days of yore, when teams had 1 coach and 1 assistant coach (usually the reserves coach), and not 12,000 specialist coaches monitoring which pants leg the players pull up first, you would see all kinds of weird and wild runups and kicking actions.

Jesse is a throw back to another time!

I am sure our coaches will iron out the kinks, but another one who needs work is Harmes. He has a Buddy Franklin "natural arc" that just about takes him into the players race. No wonder he missed so many yesterday.

Great to see a very steady preseason with no blowouts, no real lapses, and plenty of players giving the selectors a round one headache.

Watts! He was more Riewoldt than Riewoldt. That was the most complete game he's played for us. Showed his class ... and grunt! He had the look, all day, of being the glue that held the side together. A taller Hodge?

Harmes has gone from being a raw young bloke who doesn't yet belong to being a young bloke who belongs in AFL.

Oliver is ready made.

Kent whether down back or up front looks so solid and reliable.

I don't get the knocks on Wagner or Oscar. They are inexperienced players who need experience. Given there's no home and away yet, where better than in a NAB cup game against real opposition?

Many of our regular suspects (Jones, Viney, Vince) were quiet but we didn't suffer for it. That is a very good sign.

Hoges' hands went on a wildcat strike ... he was double teamed at every opportunity but our forward line looked potent. How do you double team him and keep Pedo, Kennedy, Garlett quiet?

We now have so much talent and ability that all we have to do is stay focused and determined on field and we will win (more than) our fair share.

Great article although a lot of people seem to too easily dismiss Roos' style here. Our defense during the pre-season has been sublime. Our pressure out times in the defensive half was fantastic. And as the article mentioned, our transition out of defense, a major area of issue the last two seasons, looked great. Our forward pressure was also good. There is a defensive mindset that was so lacking that Roos introduced, and combined with Goodwin's bold, striking, fast style, creates a more free-flowing game.

Was at the game yesterday and took my wifes two little ones who are saints supporters (The youngest converted to the dees after the game lol)

First of all well done to our supporters who were much louder and vocal compared to the saints. One saints supporter next to me even praised our cheer squad for being so loud while theirs was quite. It was a great atmosphere!

Our ball movement and quickness was slick and quick. There was mistakes but you will get that when you play a fast brand of football that requires quick thinking. You could hear the 'ohhhs and ahhhs' in the crowd with some of the exciting passage of play.

On the players:

• If Bernie Vince new role is at half back then we'll get another 2-3 years out of him. His foot skills and smarts are first class and at times goody threw him in the middle to steady the ship and he did exactly that.. Leadership.
• Oliver is already a crowd favourite. At one stage during the game he was involved at a stoppage going berserk with about 3 tackles in a row and just constantly harassing the contest. His first goal was simply class and nothing new to what I saw last year. Round 1 beckons.
•  Oscar made a few basic skill errors but what I liked was he didn't drop his head and just kept at it. He will get better with more experience and with Dunn out it was the perfect opportunity for him to play on a good forward like Bruce. He will continue to develop at Case and can see him playing around your 10 games this year.
• Harmes will play round 1 and probably close to our best 22 because of his forward pressure and hardness. He kicked 4 behinds yesterday and this showed that he will have a breakout game this year and kick a bag. 
• Kent was another highlight with his run and forward pressure. Can't wait till he hit the 50 to 80 game mark.
• Matt Jones was actually playing a really good game on the wing before he went off and he was spreading hard and using his pace to run back hard defensively. Id play him round one and tell him to run with Josh Kelly.
• Ben Kennedy showed absolute hardness and courage and was good to see him take the game on also. Plays a bit like Dean Kent actually. can't wait for the 3 amigos in Kennedy Garlett and Kent work their magic.
• Bugg was impressive again and was a lot more poise with the ball. Loved his hanger and also his little tangle with Reiwoldt. He will take it up to anyone this year regardless of size.
• Forget about Hogans goal kicking yips, the fact that he was getting man handled by Fisher right in front of umpire Leigh Fisher (former teammates and good friends) and not getting a free kick was an absolute disgrace. I can see why he was getting frustrated. 3 times in a row he got held and not once a free kick. Fisher by the way shouldn't umpire saints game. Some of his decisions were mind boggling.

A much better game from Tommy Mac. The type of game we want to see from him.

Those were the highlights for me. Also worth noting that between our small forwards in Garlett, Kennedy and Kent they kicked 6 goals between them.

Good to also have he skipper back to his best. I reckon he will give the Brownlow a real shake now that he has more midfield support.

While St Kilda were full strength we had Dunn Vandenberg Lumumba Petracca Brayshaw out. Its such an exciting time to be a dee supporter.

The negative I have and I think its a huge issue is our backline leaked way too many goals through costly turnovers. Grimes Garland Wagner were all the main culprits. I know this will be addressed but it will cost us some games this year im afraid.

And Pedo will be a big loss if he gets rubbed out.

Watching replay.

We've noted the improved pressure and to see the pressure or perceived pressure causing so many early kicks into Saints fwd line is great to see. This leads to easy defensive cuts offs which leads too..

Tmac brilliant early, taking marks at the highest point. Dishing off well by foot to spreading players.

Someone said PEDs was poor, he looked PEDs good early. Getting some of it, working all the way up the ground to support, looks as fit as he has ever been He will be a loss for rnd 1 if rubbed out.

Watts, Jeffy G, Harmes, Bugg, Ben Ken, et-al looked really exciting.

After reading Goodwin comments of being bold, that is really evident but as we can all see our skills at stages will cause plenty of turn over goals. Heart in the mouth, exciting to watch when it comes off, makes you feel ill when a Garland across the goal floater is turned over for a goal.
