Second one was at the 'G', in the middle of the ground, the players parted and I had a clear view of it. He just twisted the wrong way, nothing sinister about it, very innocuous. I turned to my mate and said "Schwarz just did his knee", having done mine in similar circumstances.

I was gutted. He had killed Collingwood the week before.

 

Schwartz was a fantastic player, and one of many exciting players we had 94-95. I always feel that losing him was doubly felt by taking Neitz away from CHB earlier than we would have wanted. His legacy as a champion of the MFC would have been that much better IMO if he had played a few more seasons as a CHB. 

I am only now getting the feeling that our current list is getting to the point where it could deliver what the 94-95 era never managed to do.

There's no doubting that we drafted and recruited superbly in that era, but the problem was around player recovery and fitness. We always seemed to have one of the longest injury lists in the AFL, while the likes of North, Carlton, West Coast, Geelong could get their best star players on the pitch for 99% of the season.

Remember doing a class presentation on a topic of interest for year 10 English back in 98, and chose the Ox as he was my football hero growing up and wanted to talk to his inspiring return from injury . finished off the preso with a vhs highlights reel of the 94 final against Carlton.

Hit the right note with the class even though I went to school in essendon! 

Whilst this thread is sobering for me and we can think of what might have been given a better run with injuries in the 90s I am exited we now have another freak like talent in Hogan and a young midfield group that has the potential to be elite in the next few years.. go Dees !

Agreed....would also add Jackovich and Garry in that mix. Jakovich was unstoppable when he was on. Trouble was he was there one week, and would sometimes go missing the next through injury, suspension or just not interested etc.

yes I remember a friend who was involved in sports therapy, physio at the time saying the same thing back when his second op failed. Our preferred surgeon, perhaps an MCC stalwart, used An outdated procedure that had been superseded by then.

Baby Demons 'Ouch',  that have done nothing Yet,  but I agree with you,  the list is getting better,  & the culture is getting healthier,  it appears so far anyway.

 

Lets see if they blossom individually into talents,  AFL talents,  & also collectively as a team.   that'll be the big tests.

The game was a lot simpler back then, More passed around player natural talent instead of game plans. These says there's no space to do anything other then handball. 

I remember a few years ago I was supervising a crew at a site in Sunbury.On the way home we decided to have a look at a bridge just outside of town where the final scene of the original Mad Max was filmed.I recall some flattering graffiti about David Schwarz under the bridge which was obviously written by a female.

The Ox was awesome on field and awesome giving Sam Newman the shove.

In terms of the raw stats you're right. Carey's 1994 was a tad better than Schwarz'. What we don't know is how much further the Ox had to develop given he's a year younger.

That's something we'll never know.

That's because Herr Schwartz was an inmate at Salesian  College Rupertswood. It's in Sunbury, there's a railway bridge which passes over a lake on the school grounds.

I still remember sitting in the members as a 7 year old and watching Schwarta perform that amazing blind turn and goal. Seriously, I didn't appreciate how good that team was at the time. Particularly, as what we've had to sit through in recent years has offered nothing of this. He was very exciting and the 1994 season is the first I can really recall going every week and have done since. There were some great games that year and I loved his arrogance against Carlton in that final (?), holding the ball up.

After he did that, some Carlton fans behind us WOULD. NOT. SHUT. UP. They carried on for the next two quarters. They were giving so much [censored] to Melbourne and Melbourne supporters all day. At three-quarter time they were just yelling out to us, giving us crap because Carlton was 4 goals up. 

In the final moments with us being home, this young Carlton supporter, maybe 15-16, stood up, went over to them and just sprayed them for making the Blues fans around them look like such flogs. Carlton supporters turning on each other. It was glorious.

Aaron Hamill got knocked out in a pack right in front of the smokers stand just before 3/4 time

he had been killing us. We were lucky that but did take our chances. 

If Hamill had played out the game it may have been totally different

i thought that was the day Norm lifted the curse....

My recollection is that Whitnall had been carving us up.  Carlton had been all over us all day, but couldn't quite put us away, we seemed to be lingering between 3-5 goals down.  We then, as history shows exploded on the final quarter- very exciting day!
