if mac had been available to us via nga we would have traded out of the pick that became jvr

How are other clubs getting two  academy or nga or F/S picks each year?

Because they  are handling it by getting points for the trades If the other Clubs can do it so can we if we are prepared in advance. But the AFL robbed us with the rules change.

JVR wasn't NGA or F/S. If we'd matched on Andrew we wouldn't have been able to draft JVR.

I've seen him play against my Grand Sons last season (Broadbeach V Mt Gravatt) and whilst he did Ok, I would encourage everyone to just temper their enthusiasm a tad. He is still young, and a big fella so no doubt will take time to get to his full potential (hate that word). Let's see how he goes this coming season and hope he goes up a notch or two then we can get excited. In meantime he is an OK player.

Just the Allies game and one against Cannons. Small sample size but also likely more than Joe Blow down the street.

I would let Kalani be. No point speculating too early.

Let him just have fun and continue just playing footy.

It's a very important decision he will need to make in the next 12+ months. While, we all hope he chooses the Demons, in the end, he has choose what is best for him.

I wish him all the very best.

Gee wizz he only did “ok” but still kicked a bag! It’s flags mate

Irrelevant. If Mac was our first pick we would  have made the points somehow even if we wanted JVR. You have to look at it that we would like both not just be satisfied with one star.

Clubs are doing their homework if they want the best.

That works, if JVR was to slide to the 5th round.

Edit, I see Old55 explained this.

Junior footy in Brissie against the bottom side. You would have kicked 6 RedLegs!! As I said leave him be and I hope he makes it but a long way to go for him IMO.

Interesting hypothetical.
Clubs are getting very good at trading out their early pics for bags of rubble in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Just look at what GC did last year. If you still have some draft capital left after the bids, you can trade back in just after where you left.

Lots of variables around this one. It’s possible that if Andrew was tied to us, he would’ve dropped further down the picks and not cost so much in late pics.

The simplest way we could have made a play to get back into the 2020 draft after matching and picking up Andrew is by trading 2 of our 2021 pics.

Pretty unlikely we would’ve done that as it (pick 19) would’ve cost the picks used on Jeffo and Adams.

We should revisit this in 10–15 years and compare possibilities.
Andrew may have a stellar career. But our picks from the 2021 draft may be CHF and CHB of our next dynasty.

Honestly, I expect him to want to stay up north.  That's kind of obvious.  What 18 year old is going to choose to move across the country rather than do the same job for the same pay in his backyard where all of his friends and family live?  Assuming both clubs want him, he'd be insane to pick Melbourne.

Play for a pathetic franchise in front of no one or play at the MCG…it’s a no brainer for a footballer.

There are other variables.

The G or Carrara?

Opportunity? Max 33 or Witts 32, Reid, Mac and Moyle ahead of you.

History. Play for club dad played for.

Team you supported all your life.

Development. Be mentored by one of the greatest ruckmen of all time.

plus others.

You're off by a year, Andrew and JVR were in the 2021 draft not the 2020 draft and we traded our F1 from 2022 to get the JVR pick.

Maybe we could have held off in the trade period, used our later 2021 picks to match Andrew and then try to trade back into the first round for JVR with our 22 F1 on draft night. But it would have been very tricky.

I'm on record saying we got dudded by the temporary rule change and we should be pursuing the AFL for draft compensation. Hell, they should love us, we've kept the game in the news and on the back page of the HS for two off seasons.

Agree Old and so does the AFL media.

We were accepted as the biggest loser of changed AFL drafting/Academy rules and it was more than just Mac Andrew.

Didn't they also take our NT development area away from us after years of playing there and gave it to the Suns?

The evidence will be there after this year’s draft with Andrew's unavailability to us book ended by JUH to the Dogs and Kako to Essendon. I nominate you to prosecute our case Red.

Just in time for them to get a player out if it!!!

Was it Jeffries?

Couldn’t do worse than some of the representation we have had lately.

Did I get an inkling from something recently (his Dad commenting on the choice?) that the family was prepared to move?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
