I think the best thing about Dennis Cometti is that he always refers to players by their last name, always makes the game the focus, and never shows his bias. All three of those things are very easy to do, and yet very few commentators are able or willing to put ego aside and just call the game as it unfolds.

I've heard from different sources he goes for the Bulldogs, the Eagles and Melbourne. Not sure which one or if he goes for any of those.

I wasn't saying he supports three teams. I just posted what I've either read or been told who he supports. Obviously at least two of them are wrong. 

And yes, Sheahan is a confirmed Demons supporter, from the horses mouth.

I believe that he was recruited by Footscray in the early 70's, but that he had been a big fan of Big Bob Johnson who starred for East Freo in the early to mid 60's. This translated into a soft spot for Melbourne Football Club, apparently.

Sheehan is a massive Dees supporter and considered Robbie Flower his idol (and friend) - I've seen him at a few games since he finished up at the Herald Sun with his scarf on - I understand he kept his allegiances private while still head writer.

Australian commentary suffers from so much one-up-men-ship (is that even a thing) it's ridiculous. DC would at least call the game as it is with his unique style, while the other morons try and outdo each other with words the average punter has probably never heard of.

Listening to Derm spend ten minutes attempting to wax lyrical on the intricacies of how a player kicked the ball inside 50 makes me want to cut my ears off.  

The hawks attacking alphabetically, that's atsolute gold. 

Does anyone think he thought up all these one liners in his private time and waited to use them, like commentator training, or were they straight off the cuf?

well done AMTAW, yes i think your right.. hadn't thought of it like that.

Back in the day Mike Williamson was so easy to listen to with a smile,  instead of today's frown & grimace...    as you said,  people like Mike didn't but heads with the EX players. he looked up to the players insights & also sore them a equals in the commentary booth.

.... those days were a pleasure watching & hearing  the commentary & with the humour & fun.

 

todays meat heads are all about i,,, me,,,  & they kill the natural organics of the game.

I'm too young to remember Mike Williamson, but what you've outlined is the perfect balance. It should never be about the commentator, it should be about the game. Martin Tyler is a great example who never lets his ego take front and centre.

Just call it as it is! 

Also, why the hell does there need to be like four of them in the box? I'm surprised they manage to squeeze their heads in the same room.

I heard Sheehan on the radio yesterday and he was asked if he found it odd that someone of his experience had not been asked to be on the AFL commission. He said not really but did find a little odd that the MFC have not called on him since his exit from the HS in any capacity.

He went onto say that there were three of four journo's  ( one was Slattery - the other names escape me) who have years of experience and on retirement from their respective papers could have been well utilitsed by clubs but werent

Williamson was so likable,  it ended up a little about him, in a way that was subconscious,   you know the respect you feel for someone, so you listen gladly & with anticipation.  But for him it was all about the game,  & the other commentators,  & not to mention the STARS out on the field... glowing about the stars.

 

Its was a humbleness & humility,  that didn't compete for any accolades,  against the game or the rest of the commentary team..  there was cheek & banter with louy etc.  simple Aussie style fun & frivolity.

4 in the box, I wonder if the AFL & players union have an agreement for a career path for players after they retire.  employment....   trouble is it hurts the game & is,  I think a turnoff.

I thought he was a dogs man due to being on their players list.

Although he does love the mighty blue and red, West Perth Falcons as he was a player and senior coach.
