Updated team:

FB: Jetta Dunn Garland

HB: Bugg McDonald Salem

C: Harmes Viney Brayshaw

HF: Watts Pedersen vandenBerg

FF: Garlett Hogan Kent

Foll: Gawn N. Jones Vince

Int: Oliver Tyson Frost Kennedy

Emer: Grimes Stretch Lumumba

I would be very disappointed if Harmes misses out.

Matt Jones or Lumumba for Frost.

I get what they want to do with Frost - I just don't think we should force it. I don't think he is 'there' yet as a forward and Hogan, Watts, and Pedersen/Gawn are enough tall options to kick a winning score.

GWS's speed will only be a problem if they're winning the ball at the contest and if we continually turn the ball over from the back-half of the ground.

Obviously they're much quicker and much more skilled than us so I don't see why we'd try and beat them at their own game.

We need to counter their strengths with a really smart game-plan/strategy and we must execute it if we're to be any chance.

Put simply we need to bully and physically intimidate them at the contest from the first bounce. Which is why I think it's imperative Vanders plays, (as long as his ankle is fine). Whitfield, Kelly, Scully. We must get inside their heads early and make them think twice about going for the ball. As long as we're impacting the contest and getting first hands on it, their speed means nothing.

Secondly we must be as efficient and smart with the ball as possible. I see our forward-line being our strength on Saturday so our back flanks and mids must be super smart with the ball and turnovers must be at a minimum. McDonald, Garland and Dunn must make minimal errors if any with ball in hand if we're to win this game. They've simply got to show they understand their limitations and give the ball to Salem and Vince on the flanks who can really set-up smart and attacking plays.

Lastly, the importance of minimizing Shaw and Wilson's overlapping run and spread from the back flanks will be enormous and I imagine Kent will get a similar role to what he had in round 1 last year on Malceski. He just has to be able to run hard defensively on Shaw and drag him as deep as possible into our forward 50 when we're in possession.

We basically have to play the perfect game to beat GWS. They're a really solid and slick outfit and we have no chance if these sorts of things don't go to plan.

That was then.

He is fitter now and closed out the Nab with an excellent last quarter.

He clunks marks, kicks very long and straight and can ruck.

Pedo will get a game before Frost,Dawes,Garland Omac,Wagner and Dunn on current form.

That's a bit like saying Gawn will get a game before ANB, Stretch, JKH and Jetta, but sure.....

Not really.

Do you have a point?

There are many talls Pedo is ahead of at the selection table.

Can't see Petracca or Henrieta in. Petracca is only a kid who hasn't played footy for over 12 months. Even if he is jumping out of his skin, I can't see him being  thrown in at the top level for round 1. I suppose Lumumba is a possibility if fit because of his experience but I'm still doubtful - Garland in.

I think if there is a hint of doubt about lamumba,  he will miss.   The footy dept will take the opportunity to try an up & comer, temporarily ?

This is not my preferred team, but a prediction.

Lumumba will play NAB 3 and will play round one.

The sooner Brayshaw, Petracca and Trengove come back from injury the better.

Update:

My final prediction (not necessarily preferred)

Jetta I Dunn I Garland
Vince I T. McDonald I Salem
Brayshaw I Viney I M. Jones
vandenBerg I Frost I Kent
Garlett I Hogan I Watts
R: Gawn I Tyson I N. Jones
IC: HarmesI Kennedy I Oliver I Bugg
E: Pedersen I Grimes I Lumumba

In: Brayshaw, Harmes, Kennedy

Out: Pedersen, Grimes, Lumumba

Pedersen v Frost is the one I'm least sure about.  They both may play, but I'm guessing one and I'm guessing they favour Frost (with no confidence).  I'm also thinking (guessing) there's no reason to get Lumumba in yet.  If Lumumba goes in it will be at the expense of Harmes, but Harmes did very well on Shaw last time around.

This is my 22.

Matt Jones plays because we lack outside run and he has had great preseason form.

Frost over Pedersen because he tackles and chases better. I don't have both in the side because we need to maintain our pressure in the forward line and GWS are pretty quick. I think Hogan, Frost, Vandenberg and Watts provide enough targets.

A fit and in form Lumumba is in my best 22, but his preseason has been short and Matt Jones and Harmes have been playing good footy and deserve a game.

Oliver and Brayshaw are too good to be in the VFL.

But when we won the contested ball in the first half we were all over them. So it's a difficult one. Our defensive system this year should at least have been pushed more at training than in previous years. And I really hope our forward pressure has gone up a notch. I do expect all 4 of those guys to be in contention though. Maybe apart from Stertch. There's no way he was left at Casey due to lack of form at trainings or last year. It must be developmental and to save him for deeper in the season. I'd be staggered if we picked him for round 1 yet didn't give him a single look at a preseason game.

Minor point. Stretch did have a run in NAB 1. Although very limited ground time. Billy and ANB remain a mystery. I think in past because of the uncanny parallels in career trajectory. You could swap their career bios to date and likely no-one would really notice. And now they're both in the exact same unexplained pre/early-season wilderness/management boat.

Frost played 57%, 73% and 69% game time in the NAB and that was with Pedo in the side. Round 1 with 90 rotations there is no way he plays without Pederson there as well. I have raised similar concerns with the limited TOG of Oliver regardless of output the risk of taking him into round 1. I would not be surprised to see him miss based on this alone. Matt Jones for mine has to play against the running power of GWS and suspect one of Oliver or Harmes will miss assuming Vanders and Brayshaw are given the green light. I really hope Heretier is not brought back in until he is banging the door down or poor form has a spot open up. Would much prefer we persevere with Bernie off half back.

They're both young and not yet best 22.

Matt Jones is ahead of Stretch.  He may not be next year or even later in the year, but he's had a great pre-season, is making fewer errors and has the more mature body

The other two have plenty of time.  I like Stretch, but ANB needs to be cleaner.  He's a bit of a fumbler.

Yeah, that's a solid team. My one concern is that each time GWS have beaten us, they've flogged us on the outside. There's not a whole lot of pace in that team, although there is a bit across half forward, which would be tasked with stifling their defensive rebound.

I agree to all of the above. But I don't think NAB inclusion or not gives us an idea of pecking order. Although positional differences, you wouldn't expect Wagner, Hunt etc. to be ahead. I imagine a case of season player management. And I love that these younguns' have shown genuine promise, been blooded, and will have the opportunity to develop.

Each of those games were with extended benches. I am not saying Frost's tank (or Oliver's) is good or bad, but you cannot read that much into the preseason TOG stats. And I feel with the reduced rotations, we need the extra runner rather than playing both Pedersen and Frost.

Now that the preseason is done and we have a fair idea of injuries and form (with the exception of vandenBerg who I haven't included as a result), this is what I expect to see.

Jetta-Dunn-Garland
Salem-McDonald-Vince
Bugg-Viney-Brayshaw
Kent-#Myths-Watts
Garlett-Hogan-Frost

Gawn-Jones-Tyson
Int: Harmes-Kennedy-Lumumba-Oliver

Unlucky: M.Jones- Grimes

If vandenBerg comes up, I'd take out Frost.

Matt Jones might not be in many teams listed here, but I'll be very surprised if he isn't named against GWS (subject to concussion).

The club has been clear that they'll be playing their best side (subject to injury) in the NAB series, so I think we can take more from it than other clubs.  MJ has been a staple in the team, not just playing limited minutes on extended benches.

Tony their numbers are well under others in the same match conditions with the exception of those who were interchanged second half/injury cover. Not exact but plenty I think can be read into it particularly NAB 3.

I also have this feeling, but I couldn't figure out who to omit from the team I posted. Perhaps Lumumba? I suppose we'll see in a few days.

i wonder if matt jones might miss, regardless, due to the concussion he received in the third preseason game.

i'm expecting lumumba to play; i'd prefer it if he didn't, but particularly considering vanders has to be a doubt for now i presume he will be an 'in' of nowhere near enough preseason base imo. he'll be so underdone.

there's basically two schools of thought for me tho - we either go with four tall forwards with one permanently on the bench or we chance our arm and go with three, in which case one of frost or pedersen miss out.

with all four:

B: Jetta - Dunn - Garland
HB: Salem - T. McDonald - Vince
C: Brayshaw - N. Jones - Bugg
HF: Watts - Pedersen - Kennedy
F: Kent - Hogan - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Tyson - Viney
I/C: Lumumba - Oliver - Frost - Harmes
Emerg: Stretch - Grimes - M. Jones

with three:

B: Jetta - Dunn - Garland
HB: Salem - T. McDonald - Vince
C: Brayshaw - N. Jones - Bugg
HF: Harmes - Watts - Kennedy
F: Kent - Hogan - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Tyson - Viney
I/C: Lumumba - Oliver - Pedersen - M. Jones
Emerg: Stretch - Frost - Grimes

during preseason we definitely went the 'all four' route, but because we've not played on a ground quite like the g until round 1 i have no idea which way it will go.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
