NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

Featured Replies

There appears to be an exceptional strike-rate with pick 7 in the past decade:

2014: Paul Ahern (GWS)
2013: James Aish (Brisbane)
2012: Oliver Wines (Port Adelaide)
2011: Nick Haynes (GWS)
2010: Josh Caddy (Gold Coast)
2009: Brad Sheppard (West Coast)
2008: Daniel Rich (Brisbane)
2007: Rhys Palmer (Fremantle)
2006: Joel Selwood (Geelong)
2005: Patrick Ryder (Essendon)
2004: Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn)

- And David Hale/Andrew Mackie prior to that.
- And MFC has never used pick 7 in an AFL draft.
- And last time we exchanged 1st round picks with GWS we drafted Salem.

I've got a very good feeling about this one.

That is an exceptional strike rate. Nick Haynes stands out as the unknown name in that list, but for anyone who watched GWS this year, he is going to be one hell of a player. There is a few NAB rising stars in that list.

Would anyone swap 3 for the bombers 4 and 5 imagine Mahoney putting that forward to them lol

Seems GNF was half right...

A lot of people were bagging him out for saying we were trading the picks. He was half right.

Now in comparison to pick 6 (since 2000).

2014 - Caleb Marchbank (GWS)

2013 - Matt Scharenberg (Coll)

2012 - Jackson Macrae (WBD)

2011 - Chad Wingard (Port)

2010 - Reece Conca (Rich)

2009 - Gary Rohan (Syd)

2008 - Chris Yarran (Carl)

2007 - David Myers (Ess)

2006 - Mitchell Thorp (Haw)

2005 - Beau Dowler (Haw)

2004 - Tom Williams (WBD)

2003 - Kepler Bradley (Ess)

2002 - Stephen Salopek (Port)

2001 - Ashley Sampi (WC)

2000 - Dylan Smith (KANG)

Bravo Dees, awesome effort to put ourselves in a position to grab two elite kids.

Who is Gold Coast Looking at?

I suspect, Gold Coast, after losing Dixon, will take Weideman. If not Weidman, they will go for Curnow.

We might just have to get whoever is left over.

I think Gold Coast may be more inklined to go for a mid. With Bennell gone, question marks on whether O'Meara and Prestia will be there beyond 2016 and with Ablett & Ritschitelli another year older, they may look for some midfield depth.

Wouldn't be suprised to see them take Milera or Ah Chee for a bit of x factor. Would be consistent with them expecting said player to still be available at Pick 6.

Ha ha ... it's not that much of lottery where it's purely a number thing.

I think pick 3 looks like Parish. I wonder who will be in our sights at pick 10?

Wediman? Rioli ??

I'm not keen on Weideman. Heard very conflicting reports. Some really rate him, others don't at all. That puts up red flags for me.

I heard that Parish is very lippy. Can anyone confirm?

Confirmed. Both of my younger brothers played cricket against him as juniors.

Suddenly, we have National Draft picks 3 and 7.

Discuss ...

Flew of out of Townsville feeling pretty happy with 6 and 10.

Arrives in Mt Isa, checks Demonland, reads this.

Phwooooaaaarrrrrr!!!!!! :):)

I think Parish is locked in @3. I like Ryan Burton, but I doubt they'll take him @7.

I agree. His injry history is scary in the same way that Toumpas should have been passed on cos of his hip surgery

Well Well Well

Not even Damien Barrett can claim we stuffed up this trade period

There is no doubt we put ourselves in an ideal position to draft the player we are wanting at pick 3

The depth of this draft is quite shallow which gives us an opportunity to get a another good player at Pick 7

I think we just outfoxed 17 other clubs

The players we wanted we got

The picks we wanted we got

Thanks for being BOLD Josh Mahoney and Co

Having pick 7 means we are every chance of a Parish/Curnow combo which i desperately want.. Essendon are apparently big fans of Weideman and even Francis could go either Essendon or GC.

3 Parish

4 Francis

5 Curnow (makes me sad)

6 Milera

7 Weiderman

8 Doesn't matter because it's Carlton!

Watching Milera. Has great skills, great pace, skinny as a rake. Just a red flag as a Melbourne supporter =p

FMD!! This is hard to believe!! We have actually come out of this trade period looking like a serious/ professional football club.

I had been admiring/cursing Geelong's success but here we are, having done some very serious business. What a [censored]!!!

I don't see how we could get that done. Looking at the phantom form guide, it looks like (after all the academy players are bid on and taken) that Curnow, Weideman and Francis will all be gone. Would be rapt if it did though!

After watching all the highlights, I'd go for Parish at 3 and Francis at 7.

Parish is just what we need as far as some real zip in the middle and around the packs, and Francis will be a perfect foil for Hogan because he looks very strong physically and looks a good pack Mark who is strong at the contest , very smart and looks to work up the ground.

Ideal scenario

3 - Melbourne - Parish

4 - Essendrug - Francis

5 - Essendrug - Weideman

6 - Gold Coast - Balic or Milera

7 - Melbourne - Curnow

What an incredible result - well done MFC

I'm with Steve

Pick 3 Parish

Pick 7 Francis

There's you're fish folks - going to be a force to be reckoned with now.

I seem to be on my own here but I'd really love Parish and Balic. Parish seems to be the polish outside type that we've always desperately wanted. Viney Jones Brayshaw Vince all dishing off to him along with his hard running sounds amazing.

Balic is the type of player Melbourne have never had in the last 10 years. Reminds me a little bit of Shaun Burgoyne at Port who looks a really smooth mover, has that extra class than others and kicks goals.

Here's to hoping!

Like Jack Darling red flags??

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
