Yeah I been flicking between that and classified. It is interesting to hear what different captains say on game days. Havent seen much of Jones but what they did show was good. Interesting to hear Jobe say he probably was to young to get the captaincy. I can now understand why players step down from being part of the leadership group. Lots of extra meetings and other stuff they have to sit through.

Also how cotchin and tex felt nervous leading up to before r1 when all the captains got together for there media day.

What i have got out of is the experience guys like Pavlich Reiwoldt Watson are such professionals while Trent Cotchin is completely out of his depth.. would put him in the Grimes/Trengove category as you can see he has huge pressure on his shoulders that he is struggling with and his finals record speak for itself.

Can't help but notice that Gary Ablett is the only captain who has not appeared at all.

Been a great insight though

he doesn't appear. he declined and it caused some friction at the suns.

Grimes was picked as capt at the Knights and Vic Metro over Cotchin.

Says a lot about Cotchin as a capt

Gee wiz, I didn't missed Mr. Umm or Mr. Cliche......

Would not have added one iota if he had have appeared.

His idea of captaincy is nicking off early when he can, or staying in Melbourne.

What does it say about Cotchin?

Grimes has always been widely lauded for his leadership skills, and they were the main reason that he was elevated to the leadership group as a 21-year old and became captain as a 23-year old. In hindsight it was a poor decision to give someone the captaincy of an AFL club at such a young age, but that's a slight on the MFC, not Grimes. As a teenager he would have been a more than capable captain, leading other teenagers. It's not his fault that he (along with Trengove) was seen as best option at the time to lead the MFC into a new era, and it's clear that his game has suffered as a result. No young, developing player should be made captain of a team that was in the state that ours was.

The older guys were far more impressive it must be said (Pavlich, Watson, Riewoldt and Robert Murphy), Rockliff looked way out of his depth and there was very little with Nathan Jones which was disappointing.

I wonder why he declined

I thought it was fascinating. Not enough Jonesy, but was really interesting.

I have always respected Pavlich enormously, and even though Reiwold annoys me, they are both great captains.

Jobe Watson looks like a man who is about to board a plane and never return. I felt very sorry for him, he seems like he is really struggling and you can't blame him.

said he was time poor

too many other club/afl off field time demands

Supposedly he has his own doco in the works, not sure what that one is about. Of course, he could be just having a sook at the club making him work for the squillions of dollars they pay him each year.

Is this going to be replayed somewhere? Missed it last night and the preview looked quite good.

Highlight for me was Phil Davis losing his [censored] at his teammates in the rooms - guessing at half time, and the whole time Heath Shaw is doing up the laces on his boots.

Phil Davis looks like a hipster

If he was my captain I'd laugh everytime he would get serious with me

Agree with all you say about Grimes.

I was more trying to make a point that there has been plenty of criticism for making Grimes capt while the very next year Richmond make Cotchin captain when he couldn't even captain his TAC side let alone the state team. The only thing that held Grimes back from being a successful capt is he isnt in the same class a player compared to Cotchin, let alone starting 18.

I always thoughts Delidio was better suited to that role.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
