A problem with us is we still have about a half dozen senior players on our list with the same half arsed attitude that Frawley had the past few season with us. Peer group pressure to succeed is quite undemanding at our club. It is clear Hawthorn were losing patience with him coming to the finals. Even the TV producers were following his every move on GF day. In his only direct turnover during the game the camera was quick to switch on a cursing Clarkson in the coaches box. They knew something for sure. But he has responded and played great footy in the last few weeks. No doubt the coach and senior players there looked him in the eye hard and shamed him enough to change his ways. He must have felt very lonely over there for a while.

let me give you the drum, we as a club allowed players to not chase, to fall to ground & not defend, to not tackle, to be lacking fitness, etc, etc... way before Bailey even new we would be needing a new coach. even way before 2006.

........ so lets not spread the words, that our rotten culture was something that happened after 2007,,,, it was soft, well before 2007... its just that it got worse, from that point......

This is the big question. Decent AFL players get paid plenty, and I think most of them realise it. Therefore, if you're moving clubs you'll happily sacrifice $200K (which becomes $100K after tax) to play in a successful side, knowing that a salary of $500K is still plenty to set yourself up for life.

The AFL misread this badly when introducing free agency and now it will be forced to backtrack and water down the rules to stop every second player nominating Hawthorn as their club of choice.

Yep, and the top teams get to recruit players and pay them less because the players move for success and not money.

I think if Frawley wanted to stay he'd still be here.

But I'm not complaining because I prefer Brayshaw.

I think Roos thought the same, before Brayshaw arrived.

Garland is wanted because he couldn't get us what Frawley leaving got us.

I really don't think we wanted to keep James, and I think young Angus was a big reason for that.

If Frawley was actually committed to us during the year, and played like he was interested in staying, we would have kept him. There is no doubt about it.

Frawley was never going to stay, he was after success, quick gratification. He got what he wanted, and we got a much much better player than he ever could hope to be in Brayshaw.

It worked out for everyone, but if Brayshaw was Toumpas mark II, we would all be spewing and rightly so.

I agree. It's a little from column A and a little from column B - Roos and co went after Brayshaw and said seeya James, but if Frawley had said "get me re-signed ASAP" to his manager in February they wouldn't have gone looking.

I heard from someone (no idea if reliable or not) that Frawley said he hadn't made his mind up during the year, Roos took that as he was leaving and said to Frawley as much but wanted to keep playing him to keep his value up.

As soon as we moved him forward I thought that we were readying ourselves for his departure, and that the FD was pretty sure the backline would be fine without him.
