Age profile of team

Was having a think about how young this team is as I keep asking my self the question of is the team as young as we actually think it is.

I looked to answer this a few ways.

The average age (as of April 1 2016) of the whole list (including rookies) as of round 23 2015 was 24.09. If we remove the Russian and Cross the average is then 23.6.

If we further remove the players many on here are calling for (being Bail, McKenzie, Terlich, Howe, Fitz, Newton, Michie, Hunt, and M.Jones) then the average drop again to 23.4

That means 11 players gone in the turn over, much the same as the last two years.

The I looked at my starting 22 for round 1. Obviously this depends on the trade period etc, as does the age profile.

I then noticed there weren't many that seemed old so I removed all over 25, there were only 7 players over 25 and the average age of the remaining 15 is only 21.4.

That confirmed for me that we do have a great very young core of players that are coming through supported by only a few experienced heads.

With free agency and a more active trade period, age profile is one of the more useless stats in football. Top teams top up with ready made players, whilst bottom clubs keep going to the well with young draftees.

I wonder where our lists average age sits on the average age table for the comp.

We aren't the youngest list going, that I am sure of. Maybe top 5 though.

Mr CBDEES if the dees kept Hunt,Newton and Minichie the average age would further decrease (age range 19-21),I doubt if any of these three will get the chop this year because you still need to have back ups and as the quality of the players increse,the fringe players will have to improve or they are gone by next seasons end. It is good to view your stats,I remember under Mark Neeld the Dees loss to the Kangas was put down to "we fielded a young team based on games played"yet the Kangas had actually fieled a younger side.

Many years ago I compared the Dees to GEELONG,SWANS and HAWKS,included in my stats of mids was weight,height and number of games played.The dees were the lightest,smaller than the Hawks and the Cats and least experienced. I did cop my share of negativity which I probably offended Colin Sylvia lovers ( as in fan fav). We know have taller and stronger mids …… I wonder why ? Have a good day CBDEES.

As requested here are the average games played stats..

The list as of round 23 2015 = 64.6

The list minus Cross and Russian = 58

The team I listed above for round 1 = 67.9

The team minus the seven over 25 years old = 32.5

If you swap White for Garland (as is more likely) in my team the average games jumps to 74 for the team, this has little effect on the other stats.

Shows again that there is a core bunch of inexperienced young players making up two thirds of our side.

Thank you for this! Was wondering how we compared with St Kilda who the media are praising because of their age. Got me thinking whether more credit is due to us given it seems we have a younger group than them!

I think its interesting. They were saying Bulldogs team had the lowest ave...With all our said changes about to happen will that still be the case?....That average for those remaining 15 players is very low. A lot to look forward to.

I have been as simple as using the ages as of April 1 2016 (roughly round 1). Couldn't be bothered going to years and days so just stuck to whole years.

We played a very young team in Round 23 against GWS. Be curious what the avg age of that 22 was.

Rnd 23 average age: 23.2

Take out Cross (who won't be with us in 2016): 21.7

Future 'starting 22' players not in Rnd 23:

-Trengove is 22 and Vand is 23

-Frost, Kent, Tyson, Toumpas are 21.

-Petracca and King are 19

Hawthorn, North Melbourne, and Fremantle are each fielding their most experienced teams ever, right now during the 2015 finals.

The Bulldogs are the only 2015 finals participant with less than 100 average games played.

Geelong, West Coast, Brisbane, Footscray, Melbourne, Collingwood and even Richmond also fielded their most experienced teams ever during their most recent successful periods.

Teams with lots of experience are really just teams full of players who have proven themselves at AFL level. And that 'most ever' pattern points to that proven ability and development being at least as important now as it has ever been.

See also Melbourne 2009-2013. You're not an AFL player until you've proven you're an AFL player.

And if we managed the recruitment of 22 year old Bennell and 22 year old Prestia, our age profile still wouldn't change too much. They'd all have about 8 years playing together. That's a lot of time to get it right. Not to mention FA eventually helping you prop up that list if you're a well run, relatively successful club.

Averages dont really reveal that much Head in the oven and feet in the fridge +on average comfortable

I was more interested in the break up and age and experience.

Even that doesnt provide that much useful information just more detail

Watching the finalists was wondering how we compare to them in structure.

How many at each age

How many with x games.

Of course this would only lead you to look at how many in each area ie defence Forward Mid.

It would seem natural that a team with a mix of age and experience would be better placed than one with all youth or all aged and experienced. Or is a young defender better than an older defender/a young mid better than an older mid? etc.

It also seems that the last round list management has shown the next step in team management selecting teams from the squad rather than just best 22 week in week out. Selecting to match opponents or rest bodies for selected matches may become the accepted action. Resting a player after a set number of games to build his condition. No implication on ability or slur from being dropped.

I seem to recall hearing that Footscray had at least a young a list as us, and that the Saints whilst having quite a few young players were boosted by a core of experienced older players.

There must be a source somewhere that compares ages and games experience between clubs, though I guess factoring in the commonest (as opposed to best) 22 would be harder to tabulate

I had a bit more of a play at lunch and have it now that you can enter any line up in the normal fb, hb, c, hf, f, fol, int format and it will give you the average age and games played. Would be easy to copy to a new tab and enter any other teams list and team to get the data. I can't be stuffed but if anyone wants it they can take it and build it further.
