Hawks give up 18 for Carlisle.

It's 18 AND 15.

Which, for clarification, is two first round picks.

It will be from Nth in return for Anderson. I think there's other pick(s) involved...

Under the deal being negotiated Hawthorn would give up their first round draft pick and Anderson and receive Carlisle from Essendon.

Anderson would go to North Melbourne along with Essendon's pick 41 and the Bombers would receive North's first round pick (15) as well as Hawthorn's (18).

The net effect of the trade would be: Hawthorn gets Carlisle; North gets Anderson and pick 41; Essendon gets picks 15 and 18.

Taking a C grade midfielder who doesn't make great decisions, giving up a good pick and hopefully turning him in to a solid defensive and attacking back flanker.

It's an interesting tactic.

Half back isn't a bad spot for us to bring in a mature player, I'm just not sure he's the right one.

pretty well sums it up for me also

Just re Melksham (http://www.boundforglorynews.com.au/free-agenttrade-analysis-jake-melksham/):

"Melksham has played as a run-with midfielder, but he’s also shown great signs as a defensive half-forward. He racks up inside 50s, although his delivery in there could be better. He can win his own ball on the inside, as he has terrific strength and desire, but he also runs hard enough to be a link-up player on the outside of the contest. As mentioned, he’s a tackling machine and he’s at worst an above average tagger."

"Melksham’s form fluctuated a lot throughout 2015, but he played three outstanding games, and all three were games where the Bombers rose to the occasion in tight clashes. In Round One against the Swans, he finishes with 20 disposals, a goal, 10 contested possessions, nine tackles and six clearances. The next week he had a season high 26 disposals against the Hawks, with 12 inside 50’s and 22 uncontested possessions. He capped the season off with an excellent performance against the Suns, with 10 one percenters."

... and:

"Pick 25 in this draft will slide down to around pick 30 when it is all done and dusted with academy selections and compensation picks. 30 is just about spot on for Melksham, as he fills a clear need in the Demons’ midfield. He’s still quite young, but he also brings experience to the Demons and he’s the enforcer type that can keep other teams from tormenting Melbourne’s younger brigade."

Amusing to reflect on how much positivity is expressed when we nominate 18 year-old "Johnny Hasn't-Played-an-AFL-game" as an early pick in the lottery of the draft, yet how much negativity is being expressed about this bloke. Let's wait and see.

Absolutely

The draft pick allows us to project all sorts of optimistic "jackpot" scenario

"Pick 25 in this draft will slide down to around pick 30 when it is all done and dusted with academy selections and compensation picks. 30 is just about spot on for Melksham....... "

Never understand this statement, because all the academy kids are going to be taken regardless.

Best available player at 25 will be the same best available player at 30 after academy selections.

Exactly, it's a rubbish argument. Pick 25 as it stands now will be pick 25 in a month's time.

I'll reserve judgement on this recruit, despite not being a fan. The FD deserve some credit. Roos has been here before and I trust McCartney.

Mahoney stated that Melksham has been bought in for a role off half back, so does that mean Salem will move into the midfield? And what about Lumumba?

We desperately need an injection of pace and some outside runners. Before Essendon imploded they were playing some super quick football (2 years ago now) and I recall Melksham being a big part of that - is that maybe why I don't like him?

Either way I'll put all that dislike aside for now and hope the Footy Dept have pulled another 'Bernie Vince' type trade here. I genuinely think he makes our side stronger than without him and look forward to seeing what he can produce - hopefully in a new and fresh environment he can replicate his form from 2013 (Ave 20 Disposals and almost a goal a game).

To early to say but it would at least allow the conversation around moving Salem into the middle to gather legs...

I just can't get excited about this trade. I admire those demonlanders who have put a positive spin on it, but I'm just not seeing it.

Good luck to Melksham, I wish him well. I just can't see him making any difference. Hopefully Macca can unlock whatever potential Goodwin sees in him.

Lumumba

Riley

Michie

Newton

Cross (served a purpose but already gone)

Frost (played two games)

If that is "generally knocking it out of the ball park with trading and drafting", then you are very easily pleased. By my count we have brought in nine experienced players under Roos for three wins - Vince, Garlett and Tyson - and six that have been of dubious benefit.

Forgive me for not doing cartwheels over any of Melsham, Kennedy and Bugg, particularly when Hawthorn are about to add Carlisle to their list and West Coast have picked up Reddan and Jetta.

oh yeah great take a bloke that has been injured and another that has retired but served us brilliantly and call them fails

then list some blokes we got for nothing

I for one am pretty unhappy.

He took drugs.

If Kavanagh and Zaharakis were smart enough not to get involved, there is no excuse for the other 34.

Has speed, has maturity, kicks goals and has played some bloody good football. Is also prone to making some absolutely appalling decisions, going missing and frustrating supporters like not many others.

Pick 25 in a weak draft is worth the punt. Money seems fair although length of deal if 4 years a risk.

Clean slate now that your a Dee Jake welcome aboard.

Smart enough or scared of needles?

Of course the irony here is that those of us who were hoping the players got the book thrown at them will now be hoping they get a slap and are available for round 1.

I can't get my head around how we seem to have paid full value for him and got no discount for the fact that he has a real risk of a 12 mth or 2yr ban.

IMO a small risk.

It will be back dated and the penalty will be small in the scheme of things.

A few posters on Bomberblitz mention in passing that Melksham has been affected more by the ASADA sage than any other player at the club

I wonder why that is? Maybe he got injected more than most by Dankenstein, or maybe he was very worried as he has two young kids I believe.. perhaps he got his wife pregnant at the time Dank was there and pumping god knows what into the players

Just speculating

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
