MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 17

Then he went out and backed up his words with 6 possessions.

Get the ball and kick goals, that's how he will inspire a young side.

FCS, rjay...

Can't let anything go through to the keeper.

C&B is rightly saying that we shouldn't be so worried about players vocalising confidence because of how 'it might be taken' by the opposition. He's right - it is weak.

No need to constantly harp on his form on every topic related to the bloke.

Nah I reckon what Viney said was fair enough,. What Dawes said was silly and like a pipsqueak talking about a bully. He poked the bully. Don't think Viney did that.

Youve just reiterated exactly my complaint, referring to Hawthorn as a 'bully' as in we're some weak kid that shouldn't even dare. Shocking mindset that will get you nowhere as a club

and youve reiterated it also

youre baging Dawes for having a bad game

we are discussing the comments he made

two different things

no doubt if Hogan said the same thing he would be applauded like Viney cos we love him

I've been surprised and really impressed with roosey picking kids over older but less talented guys.

Stretch, ANB, Harmes, brayshaw all playing regularly bodes well for our future. I'm glad we are not playing mackenzie and m jones just to try to snag a few wins.

Imo roosey is taking a few hits for goody.

Add in petracca Salem Kent hogan venders and other kids and we have a seriously good core of young guys.

If the players can stick to the same game plan as last week, a win will ensue.

The Saints move through the corridor, just like the Lions tried to last week.

The boys will choke the passage, thus forcing a wide path, a more contested ball.

I'm going to grab a bit of that 1.92 whilst I can - easy win.

It achieved nothing other than the inevitable, which is him looking silly. We're not in Hawthorn's league, not yet, and a faux chest puff wasn't going to change that. He poked the bear and the bear responded to the tune of a 100+ point shellacking going at half tilt.

And yes, his near worst on ground performance did add to the embarrassment.

Talk a big game when you can actually back it up,

The problem this week jr is that the saints have a bit more talent than the lions.

And we will not get it done kicking 1 goals 5 again in the second half this week.

Doubt St Kilda players would take any notice of anything a Melbourne player said regardless.

We haven't beaten them since Brock Mclean was the anointed one and John Howard was still Prime Minister!

Bloody oath we owe them one. We owe them 11!

i hope the melbourne city council has organised the planting of a few trees across the half forward line by sunday

we'll need all the help we can get

Knowing our luck, Hogan would fall over it and do a knee.

Well, the Lions were much lauded last week, od, particularly their midfield, but they were choked down.

The game was won at half time.

We kept a team down to four goals.....think about it, four goals.

if the scoreboard looks the same at three qurter time as last week jr I will probably have died of shame.

God that was a terrible game last weekend.

I tried watching the replay and gave up half way through the second quarter.

If that is the future of AFL the game is doomed.

not so sure it was just we

bears did a great job missing so many easy goals

the last 4 scoring shots of the game (all points) were from bear's set shoots and all very gettable

If Riewoldt pulls out I wonder if the Saints will play Hickey over Membrey to stretch us in the ruck and also make McDonald play back. Could work against them if it's wet.

Speaking of the wet I think that's the only chance Michie has to play. Otherwise I'd go with the younger guys.

I don't see Stretch or Harmes named for Casey so I presume they will play. Grimes, Michie, ANB and Matt Jones for the remaining 2 spots.I might regret this come Sunday but I'd rather give ANB a full run back at Casey and use Michie or Matt Jones as the sub.

So bench: Stretch, Grimes, Harmes with Michie/Matt Jones as sub depending on conditions.

I expect Grimes will play on the wing and tag Montagna.

Simple really, given our inability to curb key forwards in games like this ( think guys like Cloke and Predator Head) then it's like this..

If Riewoldt plays we lose by 5 or so goals, if he doesn't we win by................ 1 point!

Agree - but our players missed some sitters too.

Anyway, if we are disciplined, we'll win.

If you are going to make a noise 'rpfc' you have to back it up and he didn't...

I remember being down at Hawthorn when McLure sent them his nude photo shoot with the footy placed strategically (it's sometimes shown on 360)...they of course had it on the board to remind the players he was having a go at them. Jeans wasn't going to let that one go.

Don't remember who won the game but you could guarantee McClure backed it up on the field

So...I don't mind players speaking their mind or having a bit of harmless banter but they do need to back it up or they just look plain silly.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
